Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

Weekend Open Thread: Derby Day

Happy Friday, everyone! Even though Monday was a travel day for me, it still seems like it’s been a long one. There was all that drama earlier in the week, Drew’s had to work late a couple of times leaving me alone to put Jackson to bed (which makes for looonnnngggg days), the weather has been super shitty in the northeast, and for the love of God, Jackson is still working on popping his first tooth which entails endless screaming and crying (and the baby’s been fussy, too. Holla!).

In lighter news, we booked a beach vacation to the Dominican Republic for next month — our first true vacation in over a year — and I’m so excited. It’s been several years since we just lounged around on a beach for a few days and that’s exactly the kind of escape I’m craving right now. Drew won’t be going to London to cover the Olympics after all, so we’re heading to the surf instead. I foresee many drinks with little umbrellas in my not-so-distant future.

As for the more immediate future, this weekend is a special one. Saturday is not only the Kentucky Derby, and Cinco De Mayo, it’s also my mom’s birthday, and the six year anniversary of my first date — a blind date — with Drew. We’ve got a babysitter booked and reservations made at some fancy sushi place in Williamsburg. Who knows, maybe we’ll even manage to stay out past nine.

And what about you? Any big weekend plans? Have you made any summer travel plans yet? Do you celebrate “first date” anniversaries? Discuss.

We definitely celebrate our first date anniversary. December 18 and we went to a movie. So we try every year to see a movie on that date. It didn’t work out this year, but we’re going to try again this year.

We’re having a Kentucky Derby Cinco de Mayo Pool Party Saturday and I couldn’t be more excited. We’re making mint juleps and margaritas and betting on the horses and grilling out. I can’t freaking wait!

Monday is my boyfriend’s birthday, so we are celebrating this weekend, inbetween my daughters’ soccer games and the repair crew coming to fix his busted-water-heater-induced leaky ceiling. AAA baseball game tonight, a restaurant that he’s been dying to try for a few weeks, and a case of beer that is his FAVORITE that you can’t buy around here (which is super weird, but whatevs. That’s what awesome girlfriends are for!)

For now our only summer plans is a trip up to DC the first weekend of June. It’s an extension of this weekend – birthday trip. The bf’s team plays the Nats that weekend so we are going and also taking my girls to the museums and such. They’ve never been. It should be a great time.

I swear I am in no way affliliated with them but if you end up needing lunch while on the mall in DC I highly recomend the native american museum. Completely unsolicited advice I know, but I can’t pass up a chance to recomend.

in my relationship now, we havent celebrated any anniversaries in the whole time weve been together. we actually dont even know what day it was- it just kinda was- and so we made one up…. and its all cute too! 3-6-09. 3,6,9 get it? haha… the best part was, we decided that was our anniversary like back in the fall, and then march 6th got here and jake thought that it was a different day we made up. he was like, no! we decided on this date!… it was funny. this past spring was our 3 year anniversary, and so for the other ones we just at some point in the spring was like, oh wow.. its been a year (or 2!).

so can i just tell everyone- i got an IPHONE!!! ahhh! its my work phone (yes, i love my job). i just got it an activated it today! im super super excited….. hehe

This weekend, I’m going to Medieval Times tonight (super excited) and the going out drinking in DC tomorrow night to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Overall a good weekend.

This summer, I’m taking a two-week trip with my gf to California (her home state)! I’m going to meet her family and see her hometown(s?). I am so excited for this trip–I haven’t been to CA since I was about 12. Plus I’ve subjected her to my family enough; it’s only fair. Plus we’re going to the state and county fairs.

And we were friends before dating, so our first “date” was the same day we like became official (or however it’s referred to). But yes, we celebrate it. (Funny story, we also went on a date about 9 months before we started actually dating, but it was a “maybe-date” that we were each, individually, very unsure about. At least one of us (read: me) wasn’t ready, so we were just friends again until we started maybe-dating (my word) / pre-dating (her word) about a month or so before our first actual date.)

I’m not sure I know when our first date was… It was sometime in October/November. We had a few group date type stuff, so I guess I don’t know when our official first alone date was. We usually celebrate our wedding anniversary, but that’s about all.

Our major summer vacation isn’t until July. We’re road-tripping to Wyoming and South Dakota and seeing a bunch of national parks on the way and while we’re there. I’m excited for it! But in the meantime, we’re going camping over Memorial Day and haven’t quite figured out how to handle July 4, since it’s mid-week.

As for this weekend, I’m going outside my normal social-anxiety self and going to a party tonight. Hopefully it won’t be too awkward, I won’t know too many people, aside from my husband and his brothers. But I get quite social when I’m drunk, so hopefully I can skip to that somewhat quickly.

my husband and i are 10 days from our first wedding anniversary 🙂 it’s crazy how fast the time goes by. we had a pretty eventful first year between moving to a new state and starting new jobs. we don’t really celebrate our first date, we did celebrate our dating anniversary this january. we’re one step closer to getting in our house so i might actually start packing this weekend. i’ve been too worried that something is going to fall through to actually pack before now. but, we have to be out of the apartment by may 31st so one way or the other all of our stuff has to be out before then! so i guess starting to pack would be a good idea. i’m terrible at it though. i’m just not organized when it comes to packing. so it’ll be an interesting weekend! and because of the house for now our summer plans mainly involve people coming to visit us. but we live at the beach so really it’s a win win 🙂

I am the world’s suckiest packer (really). The last time I had a personal move, it was almost a disaster, but I have the worlds most awesome friends, so I got through it (yep, I’m that person. But I feed them and love them and only move every few years now, so it’s mostly good). I did take notes when my type A big sis took over the process (throw it away if you’ve forgotten you owned it or never used it in your current digs, label the boxes with locations and numbers, get lots of colorful markers and labels), which was good because long story short, I had to organize a move a couple months into a new job, and it went swimmingly. Good luck jlyfsh! You can do it! Recruit all those visitors too =)

Our getting together was also a drawn out thing, so we celebrate our anniversary around Halloween, which is when we “came out” to our friends. It’s a good time – usually some combination of a Halloween party and good food. I do love good food.

And tomorrow is one of my favorite days to throw a party! I’m making tres leches cake tonight, and plan on squeezing a gazillion limes, give or take, because friends don’t serve friends margarita mix! Plus I have an optometrist appointment tomorrow (first one in three years) and I figure baking with pupils that dilated could be dangerous. Almost the weekend, I can’t wait!!!

I seem to be cursed with bad anniversary dates. My anniversary with my ex of 4 years was March 17th–St. Patrick’s Day. And my anniversary with my current boyfriend when we became official (after dating for 4 months) is July 4th–but that’s my most recent ex’s birthday, thus we changed it to July 5th.

This summer my family is planning for my first trip to my homeland (Poland). I have a step-uncle that just moved back, so it will be nice to visit him. I haven’t been to Europe in around 13 years, so I am incredibly excited to go back and get in touch with my culture even more. My boyfriend and I are driving down to DC this summer to visit some of his high school/college friends–I love driving but I’ll be the one stuck doing most of it since it’s my car.

    Hi Wendy!

Long time follower here *more akin to lurker due to lack of commenting around the site*.

Just had to say this: LOVE that you’re going to DR. Being dominican, I hope you truly enjoy my country!

I’m guessing it’s likely you’re going to an all-inclusive beach resort, which is an awesome choice to make: you won’t have to worry about food or drink (inc. alcoholic ones), there’s usually a choice of gourmet restaurants if you don’t feel like hitting the buffet, and another staple of those facilities is a good show every night!

As far as food is concerned, this is the list of plates to check off: mangu, mofongo, la bandera (lit. ‘the flag’, it’s rice, beans, and meat, usually chicken or beef), and sancocho. I leave out mondongo (tripe soup) because it’s an acquired taste and a lot of people don’t seem to like it… I love it 🙂

I’m sure there’s a lot more advice out there for such a trip, so I’ll cut my essay short. Have fun!

Happy anniversary! My husband and my first date was lunch, and then we met later that evening and went dancing ( 2 dates in one, I suppose). It just happens to be so close to my husband’s birthday that we tend to celebrate our wedding anniversary in February, and then his birthday, with an honorable mention of the day we actually met, which was about 2 weeks or so before our first date ( he had to go out of town). I do remember all of the dates, though… we have been “together” since the first date. In fact, that was one of the things I really liked about him, that he wasn’t ambivalent! We both hit it off, really liked each other and that was kind of that… easy! This was a breath of fresh air after a string of ambivalent men.

I am celebrating landing my first teaching job (We’re talking a big girl job! With a SALARY and BENEFITS!!! 😀 ) by perusing garage sales with my friends to start hunting for furniture for my future apartment!! My body decided to “celebrate” my first job by giving me a scratchy throat and me losing my voice in the middle of the school day today. Not good.

As for the summer…I will be back at the camp where I’ve worked since 2009 (also where I met my boyfriend). I’ll also be doing some MEGA preparations for the school year since my first contracted day is August 15. I move back home from camp for like a week, pack up my stuff, and then I’ll be moving!!

And yes, I do celebrate first date anniversaries with my boyfriend. We’re at 3 years next month — can’t even believe how fast the time has flown by!!! This year he’ll be flying back to camp from a wedding (I couldn’t justify spending $350 on a plane ticket to be at a wedding when I don’t know the couple). We’re going to celebrate our anniversary this year by getting a couple’s massage. Well, I’VE decided we’re getting a couple’s massage. He has yet to agree to it…but he will. 🙂

    • Addie Pray May 4, 2012, 5:23 pm

Couples massages…. nice! Except I had a bad couples massages once. So, when I was 27 / 28 I dated an old guy. He was 43 /44. (He looked at least 10 years OLDER than that – not sure what I was thinking.) He was really frustrating because he had NO consideration for my job. Like I’d say I have to work late and he would say “oh come on!” Always. It was really frustrating because I felt like he didn’t take my job seriously at all. And we fought a lot about that. ANYHOO. I was working one Saturday and he calls and says “I’m sorry, you’re working so hard and I just keep bugging you. Well, this time I’m bugging you just to say I got you a message! Your appointment is in an hour. If you can’t make it, that’s ok, but I thought you deserve it.” Sweet. So I left the office to go to the appointment… and it was a couples message and he was there and while this sounds sweet and stuff I was really annoyed because he wanted to turn the afternoon into this long, drawn out, lovely dovey afternoon and I had to go back to the office.

I clearly did not like the guy.

But here’s what I learned: did you know when you do couples messages you’re both naked in the same room getting massages? Im not sure what I was expected but I just didn’t think about it. Also, did you know afterwards they leave you alone in the room and some people choose to get freaky in there?

Ugh, that old guy I dated always smelled like cigars. I swear to god he was 42 going on 62.

I haven’t thought about him in awhile. Though I still get calls from him on my birthday and whatnot.

I had two beers at lunch.

Old Balls is taken. He’s finally dating a woman his age and I am very proud of him. He’s a great catch if you want to laugh and drink (heavily) every night and eat (heavily) every day and go sailing on vacation. … But it turns out I don’t like that very much. He was smothering. I don’t like to be smothered. And I didn’t like feeling like my job wasn’t important. And I actually don’t like fancy dates. … Ok, maybe I don’t want to be a kept woman. Old Balls would be so glad I quit my job. Imma go email him.

I must say- the one couples massage I had was super awkward. It might have been becaue we were in Cancun or the language barrier or that we didn’t know we were supposed to tip and the ladies stood there and waited out side of the room for us….but I think it was mostly because we were naked. Together. In a small room. With a jacuzzi tub…

Anyways, the massage part was great- nudity with my fiance and two Mexican massuses (sp?)…not so great.

I agree – I thought they were really awkward. I’m not sure if it’s because of the guy I was with or, like you said, the fact that you’re naked there with a guy AND two masseuses. Massagers. Massasssugesuers.

Hmmm…interesting to hear about all these awkward couple’s massage stories. I definitely don’t want it to be weird. I’ve actually never gotten a massage ever so maybe this isn’t the best choice as an anniversary celebration? Another thing we’ve both really wanted to do is go ziplining. There’s a place fairly close to our camp where lots of people we know have gone and have had a BLAST.

I’m going to San Francisco next week! I never have been. A good friend of mine lives in the Mission District and I am going to spend 4 days and 4 nights there. My mom has been really sick and my grandpa just passed away this week so it will be nice to get away from everything for a bit. Also, weed and other things. Also, according to my star chart, next weekend is supposed to be a very happy weekend for me.

Some people are raised by religious parents. I was raised by an astrology/psychic/tarot card-obsessed mother.

I also want to add this… the person I am currently seeing (it’s a friend-turned-lover type situation) is the first man I have ever waited until I was in love to sleep with… and it’s pretty cool. That sentence is grammatically horrible, but I’m trying to leave work and my brain hurts!

I’m sorry to hear about your grandpa, and your mom being sick, but that’s a good sign that next weekend is supposed to be happy!
I’m in SF, so I’m extra happy to hear you are visiting! And the Mission is really fun. Lots of hipsters, but good food, cool stores, tons of bars. There was a rash of vandalism this past week by protesters and a lot of storefronts were broken/defaced, but hopefully it will all be back to normal by the time you get here. Have a fun time!

This weekend, I have a short film shoot all the way in East LA. (Ew!) It’s been a really stressful prep, so I’m hoping the shoot goes smoothly.

As for this summer, I’m most excited for Comic-Con San Diego. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – last year’s was one of the most fun weekends I’ve ever had. It’s such a strange, wonderful atmosphere, and it’s really enjoyable even if you’re not into comics.

The dude and I aren’t big on celebrating anniversaries, and it’s hard to say when we started dating, but we try to celebrate on non-special days by taking trips together or going on new adventures.

A couple of weeks ago it was the 5 year anniversary (to the exact day even!) of the first time my boyfriend and I kissed, which sounds awfully romantic… except for the fact it was the time we got ridiculously drunk at a party and ended up making out for hours in the hall way of someone’s house when we barely knew each other. Hmm, classy 😉 Still, we’re in year 5 so something must be going right 🙂

Ha ha thanks Addie! I started that job at the court, and since I sit in the courtroom, I can’t spend all day on DW anymore! It’s very sad. Plus the Judge I worked for is a little….perfectionist so I spend most my day worried what I’m going to do to make her mad!

And yep, I got married last August, so it’s coming up in a few months. We’re going early in the month, but our real anniversary is at the end of the month. I could only get off when the Judge is on vacation.

Lots of summer plans! In about a month I’m moving back to the U.S. after almost three years working overseas. I’ll be spending the summer bouncing around–lots of places to see and visit, mostly on the West Coast where I’m from–and then I’m moving to Chicago at the end of the summer for grad school. I’ve only been to Chicago once for a total of two days, so I don’t really know anything about the city and I don’t know any people who live in the area. I’m really nervous but so frickin’ excited!

The best part is that my favorite restaurant in the whole world is here, and now I don’t have to plan special trips to eat there! Also, I can’t wait to try the hundreds of other good places to eat. There is a much larger food scene here than in denver, and food is my thing, so I’m happy about it! Lol

This sunday I am hosting (along with my mom and a friend) a baby shower for my sister!! It’s her first child, and she’s due in about a month. I’m going down tomorrow to go pick up some stuff at the bakery and go to the farmer’s market to buy flowers and strawberries, and I decorated the house today. There’s no theme, but we are decorating in gray and yellow (garlands and giant pom pom flowers from etsy) and having about 15 people over. I’m excited, it’s almost baby time!

I am actually getting out of the house for some fun tonight. It’s my best friend’s birthday weekend and we are going to Geneva to hit up a couple wineries that usually have live music on the weekend. I’m using it as an excuse to wear my sexy black dress that I’m absolutely in love with. I normally don’t wear dresses much but this one just had my name all over it.

I have always celebrated first-date anniversaries. In my last relationship, we both counted our first date as the start of our relationship so that was our actual anniversary. If he weren’t running away from the great life we’ve shared in favor of a child’s life with mommy and daddy, that anniversary would be next month.

Today (Saturday) The Human Race will take place. It’s a charity walk, run or bike event to raise funds for several non-profits. Most communities in California take part and million$ are raised. I’ll be working safety and communications with my fellow HAM radio operators. I might get a T-shirt and definitely will feel good for doing it.

I went to the local animal shelter this week but the only kittens in need of fostering were bottle babies. Onnie’s thumb is still in a splint thus she asked that we not take on that task this year and I can’t do it alone. Not to worry, there will be plenty of tiny fur balls needing a temporary home very soon.

This afternoon I’ll finish the irrigation projects digging the last trench to install pipes for the garden. I’ve been working on that all week to replace the “temporary” battery powered valves with AC systems and clear the mini sprayers on the roses. These are the times when I wish we had less acreage.

One of Onnie’s friends is hosting her own 75th birthday party this afternoon and another friend came down from Washington for it. She arrived last night and we went out to a nice Italian dinner.

Our first date anniversary is next week, and I have no idea what to get him. He’s just trotted off to buy what is apparently going to be the “best gift in the world.” I am so stuck. I’m awful with presents, but I really want to do good this year ! (Its number five for us.)

I woke up to snow (!) this morning, which means my plans of cleaning up the garden are on hold. (I’ll probably go do some dress shopping instead 😀 )The clouds also mean the odds of my fella making it home today are low (his boss flew them down to a conference in a tiny plane so they need better weather to land) though if it clears up this afternoon, they may still make it (fingers-crossed).

I’m going to the Yukon in June for work (about 19h of daylight when I go!!) Then our big trip this summer is planned for late July or early August – camping in Montana and then up to the Okanagan for wineries!!

I won’t look in the mirror for days when I’m sunburned. Or until I can feel my skin not be so tight. I was out in the sun reading for no more than an hour and I flipped once. WTF.

Yay for the DR! I heard so many great things about it, and had it in our final two for really late honeymoon, but we settled on Jamaica.

We don’t celebrate our first date anniversary, but we do celebrate our dating anniversary every year, even now that we’re married. My husband was more of a hookup than date kinda guy in college, so he thought he had to officially ask to be his girlfriend and declare our anniversary in that moment. I still remember him saying “It’s 11:30pm on June 23rd, and you’re my girlfriend, officially. Holy shit.” lol

We tried to get married on our five year anniversary this year, but we couldn’t wait and got married last August. We usually go out to eat, drink way too much, and reminisce about how care free and obsessed we were in the beginning. It’s really fun to look back and see how far we’ve come!
