Wednesday night, I had drinks with a couple friends and they asked if Jackson had started walking yet. “He’s completely uninterested in walking,” I replied, because it was true. Most of his buddies he has play dates with have been walking for a couple months, but Jackson is content to crawl and doesn’t seem to feel the least bit left out that they’re all vertical while he’s horizontal.
Until yesterday! Look how proud he is of himself! (I was pretty proud too).
Anyway, that was the most exciting moment of my week. Well, that and when I swept the Chicago category on “Jeopardy.” What about you?
Recovering Lurker November 30, 2012, 4:09 pm
The most exciting moment was when some gorgeous Australian footballers came into my work a few days ago and I got to serve them.
Also, about ten minutes ago when I got the last piece of clay out of a plaster mould that had taken me about eight hours to take out.
kerrycontrary November 30, 2012, 4:15 pm
Mine was when my ugly Christmas sweater arrived in the mail! And the sweater is EPIC. I had filled out the address wrong on online (I switched 2 numbers–which happens 25% of the time with me), so the post office said they had returned it to the sender. But miraculously when I came home it was there! I’m considering it a Christmas miracle.
Copa November 30, 2012, 4:15 pm
D’awww. First the look of shock on Jackson’s face, then the sheer HAPPINESS, then the “uh-oh, I think I might be going down” moment… 🙂
Only exciting thing in my week is that my 6-day vacation/3 days away from work did NOT lead to insane hours of catching up. Phew!
bethany November 30, 2012, 4:19 pm
Aww! Such a cute video! Walking changes everything… Get ready to be exhausted 🙂
My most exciting moment was Monday night into Tuesday. My brother and sister in law were the first overnight guests in our new house! They were in town for a few days (they live in Nashville), and I was so happy to have them stay with us for part of their trip. I love my brother so much, and his wife in amazing. The more time I spend with her, the more I love her. They’ve been married for 6 years now, and she feels like a true part of the family. I wish I got to spend more time with them 🙁 So anyway, I took off work on Tuesday and hung out with them all day. We had a blast and it even snowed, which my brother was really excited about. It was a good week.
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:25 pm
Wellllllllllllll, if you miss them so much, you should just come visit them in Nashville! Glad you had such a wonderful day with them this week. That’s awesome. 🙂 Not sure if you’re sharing this with DW, but where are you, bethany?
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:23 pm
Is that your voice, Wendy?? Jackson is SOO cute! Watching videos like this make me really want a baby. And then I go grocery shopping and hear all the screaming and temporarily change my mind. I told P that he’s probably going to have to decide when we start baby-making, because I get so moody about it. But after Jackson’s adorable video, I’m in BABY MOOD!!!!!! So glad you shared that with us!
This week was exciting for me because I finally started my new job. I absolutely love my boss, and I love this agency. I love everything we do, the professionalism here, what we do for the community, and how much the community respects us, loves us, and wants to help us. I feel like this was a major blessing for me. So many agencies are corrupt, or they’re frustrating bureaucracies, and this place just seems so pure and wonderful. I have my own office, which is unheard of for people my age with my degree. We have a therapy dog that works here too, so I get to hang out with a dog in my office sometimes, which is freaking awesome. I have a boss who already fully trusts my judgment and has basically said that as long as I’m meeting my grant requirements, she doesn’t care what I’m doing. I’m allowed to create new programs and respond to the needs I see, which is a dream come true for a social worker! I think I hit the jackpot here, guys. The one and only downside so far is having to get up at 6am because of the commute. I’m going to be having a big bottle of something fun this weekend in celebration!
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 4:30 pm
This is off topic but your wedding is 5/18 right? The week before mine I thought.
Also, LOVED the name plate on your door 🙂
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:34 pm
Actually it’s 5/4, so a few weeks before yours. But alas, we won’t be driving to Florida afterall. We decided to take your advice and change our plans so that we’re leaving a day later.
And thanks! It feels so fancy. I keep my door open just so I can see it and feel badass. haha
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 4:39 pm
At least I got the month right! I know so many people getting married this spring. It’s like a plague.
If I had a name on a door I would totally stare at it. Although my view right (working from my couch) now is pretty sweet, a fat cat and a wide open sliding door. It’s a blustery 73 here 🙂
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:45 pm
73?!?! Good god! I think I need to head a bit further South. I moved cities a few months ago, and because I’m in the Northern part of the state now, I feel like I’m in the far North. It’s probably only a 2 degree difference, but the weather feels so horrible! haha
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 4:46 pm
If only you had moved far enough North to escape the crazies 😉
Sunshine Brite December 1, 2012, 8:43 am
Oh my goodness, that’s awesome! I have such little power and ability in my current role… and my supervisor trusts no one, least of which me with the least experience.
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 4:28 pm
Where can I buy a Jackson? I feel like I need one in my life.
I went out with friends twice this week to celebrate my birthday – so that was exciting. I got a scrabble dictionary and several bottles of wine. That was also exciting.
csp November 30, 2012, 4:30 pm
I got my christmas decorations up! My house looks like a winter wonderland. I have 2.5 christmas trees. Think tacky and every table having something on it. I love it. When I come home from work, all the timers have put the lights on and it is an amazing wonderful thing.
lets_be_honest November 30, 2012, 4:34 pm
I think we’re soulmates, csp.
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 6:45 pm
cheater! i thought *we* were soulmates?!
csp December 3, 2012, 7:10 am
Me too!
Fabelle November 30, 2012, 4:32 pm
Oh my god, I actually got teary-eyes watching that! So cute.
My week was not exciting at all. I had to go a wake for a friend’s loved one mid-week, which was sad, & then we all went out afterwards & it was like a mini high-school reunion. Which was…different, I guess.
lets_be_honest November 30, 2012, 4:33 pm
I witnessed my friend’s daughter walk for the first time last night!! What a coincidence. It gave me The Urge though, so be careful Wendy! How exciting for you guys.
Exciting moment of the week was deciding to go on a last minute holiday weekend trip this weekend. Runner up moment was coming home to a meticulously cleaned home last night. My SO was staying home to watch football and managed to tear himself away from the tv long enough to clean the whole house. How lame am I for a clean house being labeled exciting?
CatsMeow November 30, 2012, 5:39 pm
I would be over the moon if someone else cleaned my apartment for me. 🙂
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 6:34 pm
Oh oh oh yesterday when I got home from work my condo was all clean And I didn’t do it! My boyfriend did. Tee hee “boyfriend” … it’s still surreal.
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 4:35 pm
We got a new faucet installed in our apartment today. So now it doesn’t leak and we have awesome water pressure. That was by far the highlight of my week. I love me some water pressure.
Also I’m also most done with our Christmas decorations and all of our Christmas shopping! Woot.
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:41 pm
Water pressure is the sort of thing that can make or break several parts of your day. That’s awesome!
SweetsAndBeats November 30, 2012, 8:21 pm
It really can! Whoo hoo for water pressure!
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 9:13 pm
My faince has lived here for 3 years and I’ve been here for a year- we just thought the water pressure sucked. Come to find out we had a jacked up faucet! Now I’m over filling everything since I’m so used to it taking four hours to run water!
theattack November 30, 2012, 4:39 pm
Oh and another exciting moment for me was when I was running late one morning, and I went out to my car to scrape off the windshield but found that my fiance had gotten up an hour earlier than he had to in order to scrape it off for me in the cold. And he did it again this morning while I was drying my hair! I need to do something sweet for him this weekend.
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 6:43 pm
Oh oh oh you could offer to do this new sex move I made up that we call “the harmonica”! He’ll enjoy it and it requires little to know physical effort on your part. (Btw, I am a genius when it comes to making up moves that let me be lazy.) Ok, maybe more appropriate for a deleted thread. Meh, maybe more appropriate to discuss over drinks.
theattack November 30, 2012, 6:45 pm
Oooo I wanna hear more about this harmonica….. If I promise to crack open a beer will you tell me??!
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 6:51 pm
What do you think I am, stupid?! The Harmonica is a trade secret! I need to patent it first.
But I will tell you this: I walk a lot and have to climb 3 flights of stairs every day and I have bad knees …. so why would I want to create MORE work in the bedroom, right? Never fear, with the Harmonica, you just have to lie there and exert minimum movement. I guarantee 100% satisfaction for your fiance and absolutely NO GAGGING, or your money back guaranteed.
theattack November 30, 2012, 6:57 pm
Would it have to be patented, or could it be a copyright? Because in Tennessee, things that have inherent creative value are immediately copyrighted. The creator doesn’t have to do anything for it. They just get to sue people.
But I can probably make a good guess about what this harmonica entails… I’m assuming I should just climb on top and play “Oh Susanna” during the dirty? Sounds sexxxy
Addie Pray November 30, 2012, 7:02 pm
As an attorney I can verify that I…. know not a whole lot about intellectual property law. I just know that The Harmonica is like gold!!
LadyinPurpleNotRed November 30, 2012, 5:02 pm
That was so cute! My exciting moment this week was last night when I handed in my final paper and that was it. I’m done for my first semester of grad school. I SURVIVED!

Congrats! Two more weeks and I’ll be done with my 3/4 of my current grad school career!

theattack November 30, 2012, 6:52 pm
Whoaaa, that’s amazing! Great job! It feels really great for someone else to recognize that you’re freaking awesome and recognize you for it.
LadyinPurpleNotRed November 30, 2012, 7:16 pm

He’s so adorable!
I didn’t really have much GOOD excitement this week. My doctor is intent on me seeing a cardiologist for some heart stuff that I’ve already seen a cardiologist for a few years ago and that has not changed since before I saw that cardiologist.
In terms of good stuff, I found out Sunday that I officially got into my safety school for a graduate program. But … this program lets in literally 95% of people who apply, and I’m still not going unless I get an assistantship, so it’s not really all that exciting in the end.
SweetsAndBeats November 30, 2012, 8:21 pm
I had one very good exciting moment and one horribly bad 12 hours this week.
The good: I ordered a dress from Asos for my office holiday party. It arrived this week and is SO. FREAKING. GORGEOUS and it fits perfectly. So happy it worked out!
The bad? Well it’s a long story but I honestly feel better for a short while with the more people I talk to about it and so I’ll tell it here in short. My boyfriend (Dr. Krieger, the linguistics major) is a recovering addict just like I am. Well I came home from work the other day to find him cooking me dinner, but felt something was wrong. He’d been texting in a strange way all day. He was slurring his words and had a crazy look in his eye. I sat down and asked him what was wrong… He admitted to me that he’d been drinking all day and had taken drugs, in between a whole bunch of psychobabble about how the human race is parasitic and we should all kill ourselves. Then he collapsed onto the kitchen floor. I ran over and got him some water, but it turns out he was not unconscious or anything. It was then that he threatened to kill me if I didn’t leave him alone. I went into another room and started crying, he started pacing around the house while throwing stuff around, getting ready to go be picked up by his Mom to go to a 12 Step meeting (yeah, seriously, he wanted to go to a meeting in that state). He got into the shower because he smelled awful, and as soon as he got into the shower I grabbed my keys and my purse and booked it for the door. He started laughing when he heard the keys in the gate and shouted some threatening things like “You better run, bitch!”. I went to a friend’s house who lives nearby and is very strong in the Narcotics Anonymous program. Dr. Krieger’s mother came to pick him up, found him in that state. He threatened her with the sword I was given as a gift last year – apparently he actually made stabbing motions at her whenever she tried to get near him. She managed to get him out of the house, but he refused to get in her car. He ran off into the city, with her following him as best she could. He hopped a fence into an industrial yard at one point and she couldn’t get to him anymore. She waited there until midnight and then went home. He slept on the streets. He showed up at my house around 6 am on the verge of hypothermia. I called his parents to come get him and let him sit on my porch until they came and collected him.
Apparently he’s been relapsing and hiding his drug use really, really well for basically our entire relationship. He told me he has hypoglycemia, so whenever he was shaking and slurring his words I’d get him some food and after a while he would stop having those symptoms after a while. Apparently he’d been abusing dextromethorphan during those times, and also drinking every single time I let him stay at my house while I went to work. He told his parents that I was monitoring him every day that he was at my place to make sure he was taking his AntAbuse pills, but I didn’t even know he was supposed to be on them. I know that I cannot blame him for his addiction, but I feel betrayed. I feel heartbroken. I feel like I should have been wiser, but I trusted him. I’m grateful that no one got hurt by this bender of his (well, that we know of) but I have no idea where to go from here or how to feel. I’ve been in a state of shock all day.
GatorGirl November 30, 2012, 9:21 pm
🙁 SweetandBeats this must be so hard for you!! I really have no words. His replase is not your fault. End of story. Please rely on your Narcotics Anonymous friend (and any other support you have), don’t let his problems affect your sobriety. The DW community is here for you too. I wish I had something more grand to say to help you.
LadyinPurpleNotRed November 30, 2012, 9:27 pm

That must have been so scary, and you must be so disappointed and sad. Let us know what we can do!
Sue Jones December 1, 2012, 4:04 pm
Wow, must be something going on this week ( full moon? eclipse?) because my stepson, who is almost 21, a college student in his first semester ever, and bipolar, was over for Thanksgiving and got into my husband’s prescription medicines which included sedatives and narcotic pain pills (my husband had major lifesaving surgery 1 month ago and is still recovering). My stepson is in college and had been getting straight A’s, but we knew something was wrong when he was still in bed at 4 PM and did not know what day it was . He had a major assignment due the next day he hadn’t even started on, he refused to increase his dose of his bipolar meds like his doc wants him to, and was acting really belligerent. We sent him straight back to his mom’s house, where he lives. He refused to see a therapist or doctor. So at this point I am just going to let him fail if that is what he does. He is almost 21 and past the age where we as parents can force him into treatment (unless he is a danger to himself or others and then and only then can he be put on a 72 hour hold at the hospital if he doesn’t voluntarily admit himself) If he fails his classes, that is all on him now. It helps to stop the co-dependant and enabling behavior. I hear from his mother that he went to class and is doing his assignments . I hope so. Our best kitchen knife is missing and I have no idea how many pills he stole from my husband. My fear is that he is stockpiling pills and stole the knife to harm himself. He gets EXTREMELY depressed in the winter as the days get shorter. So much so that without treatment he locks himself in the bedroom and has had a psychotic break in the past. He was in a very expensive full-on program for a year which helped, but his mom was against one of the drugs he was on (the one that helped the most, in my opinion) and dropped out with her encouragement. I decided that I am done. Done worrying about what he does next. My husband, however, still worries (of course, it is his biological son). Addiction and mental illnesses suck. But at some point you have to let the person make his own mistakes and stop trying to rescue them. After you as a parent can no longer help, the universe will give him natural consequences to his behavior – failing school, jail, debt, whatever it is. As long as we keep bailing him out and enabling him, the behaviors will continue. FWIW.

That was an awesome video. Jackson is just the cutest!

Since I have no life besides work…my moment was teacher related. One of my elementary classes (grades 1 and 2) that I’ve struggled with classroom management-wise all year was split into two different sections on Monday. I didn’t like that idea at first because I lost some more precious prep time, but when I saw how good the students could behave when there were only 15 of them instead of 28, I melted. It was AMAZING. I’m one who much prefers teaching middle school kids over K-2, but I actually enjoyed teaching the two classes because we got so much done and they were so well behaved! At the end of class I had one student tell me how much more she enjoyed music with a smaller class and give me a HUGE hug and I had another come up and tell me I’m an awesome teacher. This is why I teach. 🙂
painted_lady December 1, 2012, 9:34 am
Oh, I got one of those the other day!!! It’s amazing how a “You’re a good teacher” fixes EVERYTHING. Yay!
JK December 1, 2012, 7:11 am
My exciting moments of the week are kid related, last night my eldest had her end of year festival at kindy, and she danced SO WELL!! (and was center stage). The theme of the whole festival was “A night at the Art Museum” (so like the movies, but with famous paintings), and the hall was decorated with the kids versions of each of the paintings along with several other famous ones. And my daughter was chosen to draw the one from her group (Butterfly Ship, not sure what its called in english).
In case you couldn´t tell, the kindy is big on art. 🙂 And luckily my eldest inherited her grandmas artsiness, since I suck at it.

Stepping on the scale and realizing I had lost weight despite paying less attention to the food going in my mouth. Down 10 lbs so far!
Spending 2 wonderful evenings with good girlfriends. It is just so therapeutic. Last night, one of them made me realize that I need a guy that is really affectionate with me, because I am so not affectionate that he needs to be affectionate for both of us. (big realization after analyzing my last relationship and why it ended — we had become more roommates than lovers).

Jackson is so adorable!!
I am excited that I got all my Christmas decorations up and they look great! We just finished the tree, and then had our annual junk food tree decorating dinner. It looks great and it feels like the holidays now that everything is decorates!
Also I have lots of Christmas shopping done. I’m excited about that. Less excited that I haven’t started shopping for my husband or brother in law, who tell me every year they don’t need anything.
