“Wendy’s Weekly Picks,” is a feature in which I highlight stuff I like or recommend in the worlds of fashion, gift ideas, home decor, makeup, websites, entertainment, and recipes. Of course, many of the things I link to will be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Here are my favorite finds this week:
I was at the playground the other day (my home away from home) and ran into a dad friend who was wearing the coolest sunglasses (I’m on the hunt for some new sunglasses). I asked him what they were and he said, “Illesteva. It’s easy to remember because the person who started the company wanted to make the illest sunglasses eva.” And they are kind of the illest eva. If I ever want to splurge on a $300 pair of sunnies, I’m really digging these. Ooh, and these, too (which are still splurgy but just over half the price). Since I’m not quite feeling the price tag of those sunglasses right now, I ordered these to try instead. (I also really like these.)
We’re going on a long weekend away next month to a lake house with another family we’re friends with, which is as good an excuse as any to buy a new bathing suit (it’s been about three years since I got a new one — which was similar to this — anyway), and I ordered these two bikinis (from the same brands that make great bras for big boobs) to try, hoping at least one will be somewhat flattering (I’ll settle for not-hideous) on my curvy-I’m-almost-40-and-have-had-two-kids frame. I’ll keep you posted. (And, if you’re interested in these, check Bare Necessities, which is having a 25%-off-on-swimsuits-sale and has a good selection for the curvier among us). UPDATE: The suits arrived shortly after I started this post and I love the Prima Donna one but decided to return the Freya one since it didn’t fit as well. I’d say both suits are very appropriate to full-figured gals, but if you don’t fit that category, allow me to turn your attention to this, this (30% off), and this (which has enough styles and cuts and colors and glowing reviews to have mass appeal).
It’s picnic and BBQ season and this portable grill/tote is cool, sleek, and convenient. It’s also under 40 bucks.
And here’s a table that will hold your wine bottle and glasses. There’s even room for cheese.
Continuing the summer theme here, I just discovered that my beloved facial sunscreen is out of stock indefinitely (maybe it’s been discontinued? Don’t know), which sucks, but I took the opportunity to try a different facial sunscreen I’d heard great things about and, oh wow, I like it even better. It goes on super smooth, disappears into the skin, has a very light, fresh scent, and doesn’t leave skin looking or feeling greasy.
How pretty is this water bottle? So pretty!
Last week, I decided to do two things revolutionary for me. The first: I actually went to a store and tried stuff on. (Usually I do all my shopping online, figuring that returning stuff at the post office down the street is more time and cost-effective that paying a babysitter to watch Joanie while I take a couple of hours to go shopping; I don’t dare go shopping for clothes with an 11-month-old because I’m not a masochist.) Anyway, I had a dentist appointment in Manhattan and decided to stop in a couple stores before I headed home. While at Anthropologie, I tried on some shorts, which was revolutionary thing number two for me since the last time I actually purchased or wore a pair of shorts that weren’t previously a pair of jeans was when President Clinton 1.0 was in office. Imagine my surprise when I found a pair that not only didn’t look hideous on me but also actually looked pretty cute (these were good, too). Guys, I may actually buy a second pair.
Finally, this tote bag is all kinds of cute, and it is made of recycled canvas cotton, and it even has an adjustable strap, which is a rarity in tote bags under $30. Win for you, win for the environment.
Happy (almost) summer, everyone!
