“Wendy’s Weekly Picks,” is a feature in which I highlight stuff I like or recommend in the worlds of fashion, gift ideas, home decor, makeup, websites, entertainment, and recipes. Of course, many of the things I link to will be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Here are my favorite finds this week:
Nordstrom’s half yearly sale starts today! That means up to 40% savings on lots of fantastic items, like this beautiful swimsuit that looks like a watercolor painting, and oh my God this baby girl bathing suit (!), I love this gorgeous dress for a special occasion (like maybe a wedding), these super cool sunglasses, these adorable astronaut PJs that I probably need to get Jackson, and Drew’s new favorite underwear. (And this dress isn’t on sale, but I love it, and it’s not a bad price).
I tried out a new salon a few months ago and was introduced to this shampoo and conditioner. It was pricey, so I opted to buy it online (where it’s still expensive, but not nearly as much as it is at the salon). I loved the way my hair looked, but, when I ran out, I tried out a different shampoo and conditioned because they were on sale at the store. Big mistake — big! My hair looked pretty bad for a month until I bit the bullet and bought the fancy stuff again. Now, back to shiny and bouncy — yay!
Drew and I were on a double date the other night with a couple we’re friends with and I immediately noticed and admired the wife’s new ring. She’s a dancer and it had been a gift from a choreographer she worked with for 20 years when she retired. She laughed and said it took her husband a month before he noticed she had been wearing a new diamond ring every day while it took her girly 3-year-old daughter five minutes before she commented on it. Anyway, I think the ring, or others like it, make such a beautiful retirement gift or milestone anniversary or birthday gift; I especially like the idea of a woman buying a piece of jewelry like this for herself “at a certain age” when she might better afford something of this value but it’s still a rare enough purchase to feel very special. (And then there’s this!).
Are you on Instagram (I am!)? Do you know about this service that turns your Instagram prints into the coolest gifts — magnets, phone books, calendars, photo strips, photos, mini squares, etc.? Father’s Day is coming up and we all know how hard dads are to shop for…
Ooh, I’m loving this nail color for Spring (love the name, too)!
Last week, I was at our little neighborhood gourmet grocery store, picking up some cheese and prosciutto and a baguette to have for dinner, and on a whim I got this coconut caramel sauce, too. Drew and I ate dinner late in the evening after the kids were asleep–we almost always eat dinner as a family, so on the rare occasions that Drew and I have dinner alone it feels like a date even if we’re at home–and afterward, I heated up some of the caramel sauce and poured it over two bowls of vanilla frozen yogurt, and, holy mother of God, that was some delicious dessert!!! I implore you to buy some of the caramel sauce yourself and have this exact same dessert as soon as you can — you can thank me later.
From a reader: “Your link to the Santal 33 perfume reminded me of something I bought a few months ago. I decided I wanted to try to find a perfume or two that I could start wearing regularly — to make me feel a little fancy. 🙂 So I bought this perfume sampler from Sephora. It’s $65, and you get thirteen samples of different perfumes, which would not be that much for the price, but it also comes with a coupon for a full free bottle, which would cost way more than $65. So it’s actually a pretty good deal! I’ve tried a bunch of them, and, while I don’t like all of them, I have found a bunch that I do like. I’ve been very pleased so far.”

I kind of want both of those Nordstrom dresses.
Lianne May 25, 2016, 1:08 pm
I LOVE that cobalt and gold one. I wish I knew what size I will be postpartum.
ktfran May 25, 2016, 1:28 pm
Me too! They have a size two at the Nordstrom by me. I might have to try on at work. I think it would be a good replacement dress for the white/red one that didn’t fit for the wedding.
Lianne May 25, 2016, 1:34 pm
Definitely!!!
Ktfran May 25, 2016, 6:02 pm
Just bought it! I need a couple friend’s opinions and then I need it shortened about an inch and a half. Thank’s Wendy!!!!!
MissDre May 25, 2016, 12:49 pm
I just got my sample of the Santal 33. I like it but it’s very different. I haven’t decided if it feels like “me” yet… Gonna keep wearing the sample, though!
freckles May 25, 2016, 3:52 pm
I ordered it too. It took some getting used to, but now I really like it! Ordering it from Wendy’s link came with a $20 coupon, so I’ll probably order a whole bottle soon.
MissDre May 25, 2016, 4:36 pm
It’s really different, isn’t it? Today is my second day wearing it and I’m starting to like it more. It smells almost sweet, rather than most perfumes which I find smell alcohol-y.
MaterialsGirl May 25, 2016, 5:23 pm
I got some too! I thought it was very interesting and I’ll have to put some on later today
freckles May 26, 2016, 11:52 am
I like that it’s not super floral, which is seems is so pervasive among women’s perfumes, and is not really me or my taste.
Kate May 28, 2016, 3:55 pm
I read it was unisex, so I told my husband because he liked it so much, and now he wears it too. I do usually go more sweet or floral, but this is really nice.
Ange May 25, 2016, 7:05 pm
I’m struggling with it a bit too. My pregnant boss said I smell like fancy lawn clippings so I took the hint and stopped wearing it to work. I feel like it wears in a lot nicer though.
Dear Wendy May 25, 2016, 7:25 pm
Your boss sounds Delightful.
Ange May 26, 2016, 6:02 pm
She has several nicknames among staff, none of them complementary.
muchachaenlaventana May 26, 2016, 7:39 am
I love the way it smells, just don’t know if it smells good *on me* it is very fresh smelling, like the outdoors sort of. I think it wears well though, like the longer its on it settles and acquires a more mellow kind of sexy scent.
mrmidtwenties May 25, 2016, 12:49 pm
I cannot say enough about the saxx Wendy recommended above. Once you have one pair, all your remaining underwear will feel inadequate and you’ll switch it all out.
Dear Wendy May 25, 2016, 1:06 pm
You were actually the inspiration for this. Drew’s started running in the early mornings and was looking for underwear with a little more support and I remembered you raving about Saxx so I bought him one pair to try (they’re pretty $$, so I wanted to make sure he liked them and we had the right size) and now he’s hooked.
Dear Wendy May 25, 2016, 1:09 pm
Side note: so I have been a “runner” off and on my whole adult life (like, I’m not winning any races here; I run your 3-4 miles at a time, a couple times a week). So, obviously, the whole time I’ve known Drew, I have run regularly (with the exception of my last few months of each pregnancy). I suggest to him many times over the years that running would be a good exercise for him, but he always ignored me. Then, one day a few weeks ago another neighborhood dad we’re friends with mentioned to Drew on the playground that he’s been running in the early mornings before the kids wake up and did Drew was to go with him some time. He said yes immediately, like it was the best idea he’d heard of and why didn’t anyone ever suggest it before, and now they’ve been running together every other day since (which is great, don’t get me wrong). MEN!
honeybeenicki May 25, 2016, 1:55 pm
Oh. My. God. Whenever I suggest something my husband is like “meh, whatevs” but if one of his penised coworkers suggests the same thing it is the best idea he’s ever heard. And then I stab him in the eye. Not really, but in my head.
Anonymousse May 25, 2016, 2:56 pm
I lol @ penised.
Lianne May 25, 2016, 1:07 pm
I love that OPI color, Wendy! It’s part of the New Orleans collection, which is the same collection for the color I had put in my reader recs a few weeks ago. I’ve gotten the two colors together (mani/pedi anyone?) and they are an awesome complement to one another.
Muffy May 25, 2016, 1:16 pm
I love the weekly picks column -both Wendy’s and a readers picks! Even if I don’t end up buying anything it’s still so much fun to read what others like
Lianne May 25, 2016, 1:51 pm
BTW, I just learned Kate Spade is having a 75% off sale: http://surprise.katespade.com/ks-view-all
honeybeenicki May 25, 2016, 1:56 pm
I need to find a good shampoo and use it (and suck it up and spend more than a few bucks). Most shampoos (even the few pricier ones I’ve bought) dull my blonde hair. I need someone to recommend a shampoo for my blonde, thick, frizzy hair.
MaterialsGirl May 25, 2016, 2:14 pm
Have you tried Redkin? I like their stuff a lot.
honeybeenicki May 26, 2016, 8:07 am
I haven’t but I think I will. And I might as well try the Aveda RedRover recommended below.
MaterialsGirl May 26, 2016, 10:17 am
The only thing about the aveda is that my hairstylist has warned me away from using the mint unless I’m a dude or have oily hair. An aveda that I have used (and liked) is Shampure. Do you shampoo every day? I run and get sweaty/gross so I have to rinse my hair daily, but have found that shampooing every other day and only conditioning or doing a mask on opposites has helped with frizz. https://www.birchbox.com/shop/fekkai-prx-reparatives-intensive-fortifying-masque
RedRoverRedRover May 26, 2016, 10:55 am
Oh I have oily hair, so that might be why it works for me. I tried the Shampure too but preferred the mint. Both nice though.
MaterialsGirl May 26, 2016, 11:02 am
yeah they both smell great 🙂
RedRoverRedRover May 25, 2016, 7:42 pm
Aveda rosemary mint shampoo and conditioner are fantastic. My hair isn’t frizzy, but it’s blonde and thick. The smell is great too.
Kate May 26, 2016, 11:08 am
You probably want something sulfate free, HBN. Wells Elements is really good, coming from a person with colored blonde hair that frizzes. You should wash as infrequently as possible too, to cut down on color fading and frizz. And use a deep conditioning mask as regular conditioner and don’t rinse it all out.
Kate May 26, 2016, 11:08 am
*Wella.
MaterialsGirl May 26, 2016, 11:14 am
I bought some wella the last time i was in germany and ran out of shampoo!
ktfran May 26, 2016, 11:18 am
Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel. I LOVE IT!
ktfran May 26, 2016, 11:22 am
I also echo not washing every day. I wash every other day to help with the color.
Kate B. May 26, 2016, 10:58 am
I couldn’t resist the coconut sauce.
Dear Wendy May 26, 2016, 12:52 pm
You won’t regret it.
Kate B. June 1, 2016, 8:36 pm
OMG, it’s like an orgasm in a jar.
