Wendy’s Weekly Picks

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 7.14.31 AM

Wendy’s Weekly Picks,” is a feature in which I’ll highlight stuff I like or recommend in the worlds of fashion, gift ideas, home decor, makeup, websites, entertainment, and recipes. Of course, many of the stuff I link to will be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Here are my favorite finds this week:

I got this sweater at Piperlime last week and I’ve already worn it like three times. It’s super soft and cozy, and I love the color and the way it fits. And it was 50% off, plus I used a coupon code for an additional 25% off. (Note: that code I has expired; try code “WINWIN25” instead).

One of the things I’ll miss when we move is the ice maker in our freezer. Any time we open the freezer, there’s a full container of ice. I like to pretend we have ice elves in there and they’re just always hard at work, making ice. I can’t remember what the ice situation is like in our new place, but just to be on the safe side I’m ordering some of these ice trays (on sale!), which make the perfect cocktail cubes that make all drinks, even the non-boozy ones, look right out of a magazine.

A few weeks ago Jackson lost our cable card (you know, that thing that looks like a credit card that you insert into your cable box to watch television?). We looked and looked and looked for it but couldn’t find it anywhere, and, rather than purchase a new one (they’re like 75 bucks!), we decided to just live without television until we moved next week. With no TV to watch, we decided to listen to some podcasts, and that’s when we discovered Serial, from the creators of This American Life. Serial is a single story told week by week over the course of a season (a season is about 12 episodes). The first season is a crime story about a murder of a high school girl in Baltimore in 1999. It’s pretty riveting. By the way, we eventually found the cable card under our living room rug. We’re still listening to the Serial podcast though.

I love an army green fall jacket and, though I’m not in the market for one now (I have two from years past), if I were, this one would definitely be a top contender. (Currently on sale at ModCloth).

I first heard about the new show “Transparent,” an Amazon original series, in some article I stumbled upon online that said it was the best thing on television since “Six Feet Under.” I was/am a huge “Six Feet Under” fan and was eager to watch anything that might be on par with its awesomeness. So, last week Drew and I started watching, and it didn’t disappoint. The opening sequence alone is worth any comparison to any great show before it. But the characters, the storyline — everything — is really, really good. It reminds me actually of a novel by Jonathan Tropper, whom I’m a big fan of. Oh, and that reminds me: I can’t wait to watch “This is Where I Leave You,” even though reviews haven’t been so great. Jason Bateman AND Adam Driver (and Tina Fey, too!) in the same film? Yes, please.

I like to do the bulk of my seasonal shopping all at once, near the middle of the season when all the sales hit. This was one of the shirts I ordered last week (to wear under cardigans when it’s cold) at Anthropologie’s sale on sale items (save 25% with code EXTRAEXTRA).

We sold our diner booth last week. It was a sad day (well, not really; it’s just a piece of furniture), but it was time. We needed something a little more practical for family meals (when you have a toddler at the table, you are constantly up and down, and diner benches aren’t the easiest thing to get in and out of; plus, it was too big for a small Brooklyn pad). I scoured the internet for our next dining set and this is what I finally decided on. (And I swear, I liked it before I saw the name.) It was 25% off, along with all the other furniture at World Market (Related: until we move, we’re eating on folding chairs at a folding table; I used to own these folding chairs but sold them when I moved to NYC; If you need folding chairs, I highly recommend these. They’re especially great for special occasions like Thanksgiving when you need extra seating but want it to look nice . . . and be affordable.).

I love this reversible shelling tote bag from Urban Outfitters.

And this black poncho from H&M. So cute with some gray skinny jeans.

While cleaning out one of the tote bags I already own, I found my favorite lipstick: NARS Heatwave, which I’d been looking for for months. (It’s pricey for a lipstick, so I didn’t want to buy a new one if there was a chance I’d find the old one and, yay, I did!). If you’ve been looking for a perfect shade of red lipstick, this is it. And I know because I looked for several years before I finally settled on this one.

All boots and shoes are on sale at Piperlime (use code FANCYFEET BY 11/4). I love these mid-rise Frye boots for a splurge, and these Aldo ankle boots for a more affordable option.

Ahhh I’ve been looking for a good shade of dark red lipstick! I’ve never worn lipstick, and out of nowhere I’ve had this desire to start wearing some. I’m also quite fair, so that lipstick looks perfect! (I also love NARS). Does it look as dark on as it does in the tube? I bought some Wet n Wild because it was $2 and I wanted to give it a test run before I bought something more expensive, but it’s so cheap it just looks terrible. It came out way lighter and pinker than it looked in the tube.

Ah I just noticed that the NARS link doesn’t link to a particular shade. Can you post which shade you’re talking about? Thanks!

Aaaand I see you already said Heatwave, and that’s not the dark one at all. Sorry, ignore me. (It’s been a long day at work and I think my brain is only at half capacity).

You should try it! Heatwave looks good on everyone I’ve seen wear it.

I’m really loving Serial too. I’m a longtime This American Life listener, too, and have always liked her segments on there.

Oh and I haven’t had time to watch more than an episode of Transparent, but it’s on my to-do list…

They’re both so good. Drew and I have only watched the first two episodes of Transparent so far and could easily watch all of them in one or two nights, but right now we’re knee-deep in moving hell (packing, painting, moving stuff over, unpacking, cleaning, etc. etc.) and don’t have time. But that just gives us something to look forward to once the move’s behind us and things settle down a bit.

Did anyone see that Tom from Car Talk died? So sad! I didn’t listen to them every week but I always laughed when I did.

You are the second person in 2 days that has told me about Serial. I will totally listen.

Also, Kate and I just got back from Napa and she was scouring the boutiques for a poncho…they were all 100% cashmere and $300+. She finally settled on a super cute black cape that the shop owner gave to her for 50% off! But she should totally buy this poncho.

Finally, thank you for the tip on the Piperlime sale! I need new boots!
