What’s On Your Summer Bucket List?

Yesterday was Jackson’s last day of school (yes, in NYC, public schools go all the way ’til the every end of June), so today feels like the first official day of summer in our family, even though the weather’s been warm for weeks and it’s been staying light out until 9 since the end of May. Now, we have ten weeks of not having to worry about homework, being to school at 8:20, and waking up Joanie from her nap to go pick up Jackson at 2:30. With a more flexible schedule, longer days, and maybe even a spirit of leisure, I’m hoping I can cross some of these things off my summer bucket list:

Teach Jackson to ride a bike (without training wheels)

Re-start a regular yoga practice

Go to the beach at least once a month (checkmark for June after our trip to the coast of South Carolina earlier this month — now I have to make sure we make it surf-side in July and August and maybe early September, too)

Weekly picnics (in the park, in the botanic garden, at the beach — I don’t care where, as long as it’s outside, on a blanket, and involves refreshing beverages and lots of cheese)

Disco rollerskating (there’s a rink in the park not too far from us that hosts disco rollerskating parties every Friday and I’ve always wanted to try it out. This is the summer I do!)

See a play (on Broadway, off-Broadway, wherever — the key is to take in some culture since we live in the capital of the theater world, after all)

Enjoy some live music outdoors at least once a month (this month we saw the NY Philharmonic perform in Prospect Park, which was amazing, especially since friends with VIP tickets invited us to join them right up next to the stage; I hope to experience more stellar music outdoors this summer!)

Swim in a lake (we have a family trip planned for Chicago, so I’m reasonably sure we’ll go swimming in Lake Michigan, but I’d like to add an additional lake to our summer agenda… I’m just not sure when or where that might be yet)

Enjoy an evening in Red Hook with Drew (it’s one of our favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods that’s remote and different enough from the rest of the city that it always makes us feel like we’re on vacation when we’re there, even if it’s just for dinner and drinks)

Read five books (This should not be a hard one! I used to read five books in a summer week, EASY, back in the day. But things have changed, and when I find time to read these days, I am usually so tired that I pass out after a few pages. But I miss reading, and I feel the effect not reading has had on my attention span, creativity, mental agility, and emotional well-being, so I am going to give myself the challenge of reading five books and try my very hardest to meet that challenge)

#Resist (Attend marches, make phone calls, send postcards, donate to causes and campaigns I support)

Eat a lot of ice cream

What’s on your summer bucket list?

Do you know about the New Victory theater in Times Square? They put on amazing plays and performances for kids, even kids Joanie’s age. They mostly take off for the summer, but their schedule for the fall is up. It’s my way of experiencing some of NYC’s theater without hiring a babysitter!

RadioStar and I keep a list in my bullet journal of random adventures to do. We just completed one last night: Champagne and Fried Chicken special at St Lou’s Assembly!

South Michigan Ave Blue Heaven Foundation http://www.bluesheaven.com/
At least two movies in the park complete with picnic
Long bike ride every third week (did one to a brewery in Glenview a few weeks ago, going to Aurora this weekend for 40 miles, will do the annual pilgrimage to both Lake Bluff and to Three Floyds later in the summer).
    Meal Plan!
Smoothie night at least once a week.
Random Chicago Neighborhood adventures. Get out in the city!
Pick raspberries etc at a farm
Late night strolls on the riverwalk and lakefront
    Happy Hour at Acadia https://acadiachicago.com/
    Concert at Reggies
    Jazz Showcase

    I”m sure there’s more..
If anyone in DW-land wants to join in, the more the merrier!

I dated a guy from Lake Bluff in high school and can’t disassociate the two… It is beautiful up that way and the bike trail is fantastic – my parents used to do that all the time. When the weather was nice, they would bike to Market House on the Square in Lake Forest and get appetizers on their patio. (It’s been like 5-10 years, though.)

Wendy, check out “The Weight of Ink.” The description isn’t super compelling but I took a chance and it’s ????.

I have finished it too, and give it the highest reco. It didn’t like build you up and then let you down like a lot of books do.

Is it a good “beach read?” I’m looking for one for my “me” day on Wednesday.

I mean, yeah, I enjoyed reading it on vacation for sure. It’s not like Big Little Lies though, it’s pretty literary. But still very much held my attention.

I keep trying to comment on threads in the forums and nothing is happening. I’m not having problems with my connection, or on any other site. FYI.

Gosh. I don’t have a summer bucket list!! I see yours and feel like I need one though. I guess one, for sure, is to get to the beach more than twice. I will accomplish the “twice” next week between my “me day” on Wednesday and going to visit the Cape and Kate on Thursday/ Friday – WITH baby so it will be different than my “me day.” Otherwise I need more inspiration!

Well, I’m doing one bucket-list item this weekend: tour of the Shakespeare Library in DC! And I’ve already had my yearly beach vacation: I’m usually craving a trip to the beach by the middle of the summer and we plan something last-minute, but we got ahead of it this year.
    – host an outdoor movie
    – have a BBQ
    – finish a book (it’s a low bar, I know, but I haven’t finished one in forever)
    – get my Etsy sales up to 50 ( I’m at 33 sales and in a typical month I only get about 4 sales, so it’s a bit of a stretch)
    – go to a pool
    – make smores

I can’t wait to have a house with a yard so we can host bbqs again. I love living in Salem but condo living has its limitations.

      What’s your Etsy shop?

Thanks ktfran! Funny you say that, I actually just made a BUNCH of those (like 8 or 9) because I got a lot of positive feedback. I even varied what the constellations were so people could get their zodiac sign. I’ll be putting a bunch up over the weekend if you check back on, say, Sunday….

I also think I still have a DW discount code from when Wendy graciously included my shop in a post last year, I’ll have to look.

I used to make a summer bucket list every summer, it always usually consisted of the same few things each year (swim in a lake, go berry picking, go to an outdoor concert, etc.) I’ve already strawberry picked since they have strawberries at my CSA. The weekend after this one, we’re camping on an island in Lake George, so I’ll be lake swimming then. And I have tickets for an outdoor concert at the end of August. So I’m doing pretty well! I don’t really have any new things in mind for the list.

Go to the beach every weekend – I live in a coastal city.

Check out concerts in the park that my city hosts each Sunday night starting in July.

    Start a meal planning routine.

Take the dog on a long walk through the cute city we live in at least 2 times a week.

Oh man, enjoy! (Since you’ve got a smiley face, I’m guessing it’ll be good.) That’s what I want to do, but my boyfriend doesn’t start his new job until fall and we’ve decided we need to build up some savings first.

But summer really seems like the season to be unemployed.

Girl, it is. I was laid off in February with 11 months severance, and by late May / early June I was pretty sure I had a new job, then was official for sure. So I’ve just been living my best life since Memorial Day. It’s amazing.
