In a recent survey — conducted by Doritos, curiously enough — 49% of women confessed to being addicted to online gaming. That’s just one percentage point lower than their male counterparts. In fact, women spend more time than men glued to their screens — “whiling away 23.2 percent of their time online playing games” to men’s 22.3 percent. The study also showed that “not only are women just as keen on gaming as men, the majority would rather spend time playing on their gadgets than having sex.” Damn. This got me thinking about how we — men and women — prioritize our leisure time. If sex isn’t the most important thing, does it even rank in the top three? Curious minds want to know! Take the little poll below and let’s see how things pan out. Feel free to rank your top three favorite leisure activities in the comments (tell us your gender, too!).

Is online shopping counted as “surfing the net” or “shopping?” Because thats how I kill time in meetings. That and DW.
Natalie B. July 18, 2011, 12:26 pm
I do crafts (beading, cross stitch, sewing).
Ally July 18, 2011, 12:42 pm
Ooh me too 🙂 I mostly like crochet, but patchwork, fixing up old dresses and recently knitting are up there too. That and TV at the same time is a great way to spend an hour.
honeybeenicki July 18, 2011, 12:37 pm
I was a toss up between reading and sex, but ultimately if I was given the option I would likely put the book down.

If it’s any time between April-October, my favorite thing to do is work out in my garden or sit on my deck (and read/listen to music/drink wine).
kerrycontrary July 18, 2011, 12:51 pm
I don’t even believe that survey. Plus, it’s conducted my Doritos. My explanation is that a lot of gamers sit at their computer with Doritos.
silver_dragon_girl July 18, 2011, 1:38 pm
I sit anywhere with Doritos.
Seriously, though, Doritos are like the perfect gaming snack except for the orange fingers.
Bethany July 18, 2011, 2:04 pm
I love the orange fingers!
I never really ate Doritos until a year or 2 ago… And they are glorious!

As a mum of 2 (the youngest nearly 3 months) you can bet that if we have a spare hour (ie girls sleeping) we sure as hell aren’t going to be reading or gardening!!!
Blitzen July 18, 2011, 12:54 pm
Female.
1. Surfing the ‘net
2. Reading
3. Watching soaps
I’m such a cliché 🙁

Oh Wendy… it’s too early to get me thinking about tacos.
silver_dragon_girl July 18, 2011, 1:40 pm
Reading, definitely, if I have a good book. If I don’t, usually TV of the Sims. If my bf is around, well…:D
LennyBee July 18, 2011, 2:15 pm
I think it definitely depends. I wouldn’t rank any of those options as the one I would always want to spend my spare hour on. I would say “quality time with my sweetie” tops the list. And that quality time could be defined as reading, watching tv, sexing, going shopping, or any other leisure time, depending on what we haven’t done in awhile. So if we read last night, that’s not a priority tonight. If we watched tv an hour ago, I’m over it, time to do something else. Sex is only the most important (or even top 3) when it’s been a couple days. If we did it this morning, it’s not a priority this evening.
kittyk July 18, 2011, 3:42 pm
damn it wouldn’t let me vote for multiple options!
Preferred way to kill and hour:
Readin
Bein outside feelin the sun on my face
&
Boozin!
Thats #1 way to kill time.
🙂
Sex is a pretty close second… maybe even a tie…
Anna July 18, 2011, 3:51 pm
I’m a multitasker…I drink WHILE surfing the net! 😉
beans629 July 18, 2011, 4:30 pm
Reading DW of course. 🙂
AKchic July 18, 2011, 4:40 pm
Reading! If I have a new book, that comes above all else, if the kids are asleep.
If the kids are awake, well… then I doubt it’s down time. Kids only sleep at night, so there isn’t much for me to do at night. It’s either a movie, tv, or read. Most nights, I’m too tired for sex.
And even when I’m watching movies/tv, I’m still folding laundry, working on schedules, grocery lists, etc. Reading is about the only way to completely disconnect.

My favorite, and I think my husbands because he suggests it all the time, is to sit out on the deck or porch together and talk. He also drinks wine while we sit out.
TheOtherMe July 18, 2011, 4:42 pm
I love to cook. As I’ve said before, cooking with a glass ( or three ) of wine and some good music really is a treat for me. Also taking a long bath…with a glass ( or three ) of wine and some good music …
Renee July 18, 2011, 7:45 pm
I color. Like how children color in coloring books. I use Roger Burrows ‘Images’, which are essentially black and white optical designs. Been doing it for years, it stimulates the mind without stressing it.
fallonthecity July 19, 2011, 12:13 am
Reading, without a doubt. I recently invested in a Nook and so I now have about a bazillion novels with me in my purse anywhere I go. It’s actually been cutting into my DW time… 🙂
VioletLover July 19, 2011, 2:18 am
Female here.
1. Surfin’ the net (mostly webcomics, advice columns and news websites)
2. Doodling. I love to draw and sketch characters in my head.
3. Reading. Sooooo many books.
SGMcG July 19, 2011, 11:15 am
I’d like to see what they qualify as gaming in this survey. There are HUGE differences between gaming=racking up achievments on the 360, gaming=clicking and pointing on a FB app and gaming=drawing up a character sheet for a D&D session or a traditional board game. That being said, I like to game. I also like to read in my spare time and craft costumes for conventions. Yet if I could have teh sexy time, I’d ask for it.
j.walker July 19, 2011, 11:50 am
Oh man, given the choice I would choose sex… But spare hours don’t always happen in bed with my boyfriend while all our roommates are tucked away wearing headphones. So, realistically I choose being outside.
Rachelgrace53 July 19, 2011, 4:07 pm
Pretty sure sex would trump anything else unless I’m not happy with my bf at that moment. And while gaming is a top hobby for me, I can’t see getting on the computer if I knew I could be on him instead…
McLaughlane August 4, 2011, 1:53 pm
I picked reading, but I also enjoy bedroom dance parties and surfing the net.
Sex would be in my top three, but it isn’t for two reasons:
1. I am in a LDR, and my fiancé and I see each other one or two weekends a month. Therefore, my spare hours are not filled with sexytime or makeouts unless he is visiting.
2. The birth control I am taking is a damper on my sex drive.
But still, when I am with my fiancé, I barely touch my computer, so sex/makeouts definitely take over the third slot during these times.
