“My Stepdaughter’s Demanding I Throw a Huge Baby Shower”
“The only daughter of my significant other (we’ve been together for four years, living together for one) is having a baby in July.”

“With the exception of maybe three weekends in the two years my partner and I have been together, we have spent every Sunday at her parents’ house for dinner. “
My husband and I are graduating from medical school this spring (hallelujah!). To celebrate, I am finally getting the tattoo that I have wanted for many years. It is a large back piece, and it will be my first and probably only tattoo. I am very excited, and my husband is extremely supportive. Notably, the tattoo will be completed before our graduation in May. My father and my in-laws both detest tattoos. Passionately. They feel that tattoos reflect poorly on the characters of those who have them (couldn’t disagree more, but that’s their opinion). Because graduation is a festive weekend where women will be wearing their loveliest summer dresses, I will have…
I am currently a college junior and will graduate in May of ’16. My boyfriend of two and a half years is a college senior who lives in another city in my same state, and he will graduate this December. I told him I want to move back home (two hours away) after I graduate so that I can get my finances in order and get back on my feet. He told me that isn’t a good idea because I will be limited in my job prospects. He pretty much wants to either stay where he is or move somewhere where there is a big technology presence, technology being the industry he…
New readers, welcome to Dear Wendy, a relationship advice blog. If you don’t find the info you need in this column, please visit the Dear Wendy archives or the forums (you can even start your own thread), do a search in the search bar, or submit a question for advice at wendy(AT)dearwendy.com. I am a 36-year-old divorced single parent. My ex-husband was abusive (I moved away 8 years ago). I have a great life but have not been able to move on romantically and have a relationship. Two years ago my friend’s husband started working in my office. We really hit it off. We just seem to understand each other and I…
It’s time again for Shortcuts. For every question, I’ll give my advice in just a few sentences because sometimes the answer to a person’s question is so obvious and the need to hear it so great that being as clear and frank as possible is simply the best way to go.
“I’m pregnant with identical twin boys and engaged to the father. But now that we’re pregnant, I’m not sure if I want to marry him.”
“I’ve always loved children and since we since we never had any, I’ve always prioritized my nieces and nephews and figured I’d attend all their weddings… “
I’ve been married almost two years now and, for the past few years, I have tried really, really hard to establish a relationship with my husband’s brother and and his wife, “Cheryl.” When I first met her, Cheryl didn’t drive or have a job, and, from what I heard, she was depressed. Especially because she was “depressed,” I would always try to get her out of the house. I would take her out for lunch all the time, support her events, even helped put together her 30th birthday party. When she started working, I drove her to work a few times and brought her lunch often. She got her license and a…
I left home when I was about 20 years old to move in with my then-fiance, whom I met a year earlier. We’ve been together ever since then. We now have a 7-year-old child and are happily living our lives as we please. My partner works and I’m on home duties as well as a volunteer fire fighter. The problem is that my parents want us to travel south, a 3-hour drive away, to see them, which we do sometimes, but they never come up to us for a visit in return — it’s always one-sided and we’ve tried talking to them but it falls on deaf ears. I’m also gluten-free because…
