Ha. Sometimes I think back on the hiring process at my current company and how aggressive HR was once I had the offer and think, “Man, I should’ve known.” They gave me that offer letter at like 4:55 on a Friday and asked for a response by EOD Monday. One of my “asks” was to push the start date out another week, explaining that I wanted to give two full weeks notice and had a conflicting vacation already scheduled, the HR gal responded, “Why haven’t you given your notice yet? We gave you this offer a week ago!” This was over the phone, and it was maybe Tuesday. It’d been two business days.
Anyway, if nothing else, I think it’d be nice to keep in touch with the law firm for potential future opportunities, so I don’t see any harm in speaking with the hiring manager.
I didn’t officially say I accept in writing, I suppose. I mean, I did on the phone after we’d discussed details, and they were like “great, we’ll confirm in writing.” Instead of an offer letter, they sent a confirmation of employment letter with no place for me to sign. My response was something along the lines of “thanks, looking forward to joining the team” when it arrived by e-mail. They’ve never asked me to sign anything or otherwise re-confirm in writing, which didn’t strike me as too odd? But I suppose I’ve only worked a few places and don’t know if this is odd.
Like, my current company didn’t even give me time to think about the offer, and negotiations weren’t verbal. They sent me an offer letter the day after my second interview and asked me to accept or decline within a business day. And our negotiation was me sending back a marked up copy of the offer letter with what I wanted, and HR being snooty about how much money I asked for. Is that more normal?
In any case, I think the other firm is going to move really, really, really slowly. The job I applied for can be based out of any major market in the U.S. where the firm has an office, so I’m competing with candidates nationwide, not just locally. I was frustrated to have to wait so long for a response but given what I know about the opening, wasn’t totally surprised it took longer than they said it would.
No. This company does things differently from others I’ve worked at. We discussed details by phone, then they sent a confirmation letter. They signed it, I don’t. I’m assuming it’s just as official, but no other company I’ve worked for has ever done it this way.
Okay, so, as I’ve mentioned on here, about a week ago I was offered a new job, and as of yesterday, everything is official. Start date on the offer letter is 2.5 weeks away, and I was planning to put my notice in on Monday.
Of course, yesterday I also get a call from a law firm I interviewed at 3(!) months ago. The last time I reached out to their HR was sometime last month asking for an updated hiring timeline, and that e-mail was ignored. I assumed I wasn’t getting the job and moved on. But they asked if I’m available tomorrow or Friday to speak with the hiring manager by phone. I said yes, and told them about the other job off (at the time, I had nothing in writing, so did not consider anything official) and mentioned acceptance still wasn’t finalized.
At this point in time, is there any harm at least speaking to the hiring manager to see what she has to say? I guess I’m curious to see if they WILL offer me a job after all, and IF that happens, how bad it would be, professionally to back out of the job I’ve already accepted. Thoughts? (Yes, still a lot of speculation at this point, and while I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, I’m super curious about what my chat with the hiring manager will be like tomorrow.)
Also, whenever I’m down about how shitty people are, I feel an urge to go to a race. The running communities at the few races I’ve done have always been so positive and encouraging. The half marathon I ran has an “underwater mile” (a tunnel that stretches from Canada to the U.S.), and everything in that tunnel echoes, and everyone was cheering and shouting out encouragements that bounce all around you. Yay endorphins!
Yay @lucia_la! I ran my first half marathon last fall and didn’t QUITE train properly (was only running 1-2x/week instead of 3+), so I didn’t accomplish either of my goals as a newish runner and first-time half-marathoner (to not walk and to finish in under two and a half hours… I finished in two hours and 31 minutes), but I had a BLAST and am planning to do the same race again this fall but hopefully better. The first 10 miles of that run were so much fun. The final three I rode the struggle bus but still finished. @Portia, if you can run 10 miles, you should be able to run 13. I have a 5-mile race that I signed up for in about a month and I’ve been on exactly three runs since my half marathon, so I should probably get a few in before race day!
I listen to the podcast Death, Sex & Money and follow them on Facebook, and today they linked to this article about dating in different cities around the U.S.: http://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/a9078418/i-tried-dating-in-6-different-us-cities-heres-what-i-found-out/
I haven’t had a chance to read the whole thing yet because I’m at work, but I did scroll down to the section about her experiences in Detroit and skimmed since I was living in its surrounding ‘burbs until a couple years ago. What she wrote about dating in that area didn’t resonate with my experiences, but it was hard to tell if she was in the city proper or the surrounding areas.
In any case, I thought some of the regular commenters on this thread might enjoy the read!
I started looking last October! I’ve had a few interviews at other places, but one company rejected me and the other is taking its sweet, sweet time. I started this thread knowing I wanted to ramp up my search this year — my current job is not ideal — but looks like I won’t have to. (Although, I’m STILL waiting on the offer letter so I suppose it’s not official until I have that in my hands.)
Thanks! Right direction, I think, yes. I was targeting one specific type of job within law firms, and this is within the industry but not at a firm. So, not quite what I was aiming for, but right direction — and I’ve had a lot of issues with my boss at my current job, want to move on sooner rather than later, and knew I’d be a good candidate for this place. The job is a step up in title (it’s manager-level, which would be brand new to me), pay, and benefits, and has potential for growth (to director-level), so all the benefits taken together compounded with current work issues make it very appealing. I’m impatient waiting on the written offer so I can review everything and make a final decision, but am leaning toward getting outta this joint.
Of course, I also thought my current job was the next step in the right direction and was wrong, so I think I’m hyper-aware that every time you change jobs, there’s risk involved. My fear is jumping form bad to worse, but I suppose I stand that risk no matter when or where I make a move.
@em – I think that’s the best update we’ve had to this thread in awhile! Glad you got out of the situation you were in — it can be really hard to do even when you KNOW the person isn’t good for you. And, don’t be too hard on yourself for ending up in a relationship that just wasn’t good for you — I think we’ve all put up with things we know we shouldn’t, but come out the other side wiser for the next time. Sounds like you’re in a good place about this, but take good care of yourself!
Just got the call from the director of the department that I’m being offered the job! Written agreement to follow soon, and I plan to ask to have the weekend to review everything. The pay bump isn’t quite what I’d hoped for (10 percent), but the benefits at this place are WAY better than what I have now from the overview I was given during the interview process. (Company pays healthcare premiums – YES!) Kinda nervous right now.
Last night on Tinder, I received a message from a guy that I recently matched with. I’ve matched with him before before — maybe a year or two ago — and chatted with him, and for some reason we never met up. In a city of like 3 million people, it seems I’ve swiped through all of Tinder and am now making my next round at it. Hahaha.
