Also wishing BoF a speedy recovery and no lingering symptoms. I share in everyone’s frustration that there are some people are living their lives as if COVID isn’t real with seemingly no consequences, while there are some who have tried their absolute best and still get sick. This is the second instance I’ve heard of today where someone who has really been hunkering down has contracted COVID, which is scary!
I’ve seen videos of the Dyson airwrap and it looks wild to me. The sections of hair I see people grabbing in videos seem so small to me and I have a pretty thick head of hair. But, hey, maybe one day I’ll buy it just to try it and realize I should’ve done it sooner.
@TheLadyE If you want to spend that much money at Ulta to achieve a certain status, maybe skincare products are the way to go right now. I am wearing less make-up these days, but have been trying to up my skincare game.I haven’t paid attention to if the Costco one is identical, but yeah, often their products are a little different. My sister had the Revlon one and loved it (she used to spend SO much time straightening her hair instead of rocking her natural curls). Hers crapped out after a few years of frequent use and when she purchased a new one, got a knock-off that she seems to like just as much. It might be Hot Tools? I’m not sure the brand, but I think at this point several companies have their own versions or Revlon’s, so you can take a look at price points. I’ve seen on on Amazon that might well be Amazon brand that’s cheaper but gets just as good reviews.
I have the Revlon and John Frieda brushes. The Revlon is very fast (I use it on high, it is very hot, but my hair isn’t any worse from it according to my stylist). The end result is like you got a blowout with a paddle brush. It even gets my sister’s very curly hair, VERY thick hair straight in a relatively short amount of time. My style with it withstands humidity very well (did both Savannah and Nashville in July with that one). I’ve seen it at Costco, if you’re a member.
The John Frieda one takes longer but the end result is nicer. This one doesn’t pass the humidity test for me, which was a bummer.
I don’t find either one does much for me in terms of volume, but I have thick hair so I’m okay on that front.
I’ve also seen T3 hair tools at Costco, which are pricier but nice if you are in the market for a “normal” hair dryer.
So BG has been best man in something ridiculous like 12 weddings. I know he at least wants no wedding party or just his brother by his side because he thinks it’d be too hard to pick a best man from his group of best friends. I’m on board with the no wedding party/just a sibling thing, but I think it’s hilarious because I don’t have this “problem” even a little bit.
@hfantods I think that’s sweet and very appropriate for a COVID proposal. We did a puzzle of ourselves early in COVID, sent by his mom (of course). I can’t remember how old you are, but if I recall correctly (early 30s?), I don’t think have to freak out about family planning yet. You guys can always get married in a small ceremony (just you two or you two + immediate fam) and have a bigger party later on.
I’d be very satisfied with that kind of wedding, @ktfran. (We go to Dinkels so much now that we live around the corner!) I think BG wants something more traditional, which I’d be fine with but would still want to keep things smaller, I think. I could very easily pare down a guest list to family and just a handful of close friends. I don’t think BG would fare as well whittling a guest list down — in his words, he “has a lot of best friends.” We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
BG’s SIL has joked that his mom has spent 23 hours/day thinking about BG’s wedding since SIL married BG’s older bro 10 years ago. BG then became her only unwed child. I’d be happy with a courthouse wedding, which I think would horrify her.
And yes! Conflict-free appeals to me very much! Or a lab diamond. I wish we had some family ring or something to pass down, but we don’t. I get so many Brilliant Earth targeted ads because we’ve done a little bit of looking online, haha. I didn’t know about the virtual try on feature and will look into it!
Congratulations, @hfantods! So the proposal itself was a surprise, but were you expecting it to happen soon-ish or were you completely taken aback by all of it? How/where did it happen? Tell us more! (If you want… I happen to like proposal stories.) BG’s mom would want you to book your venue ASAP because she’s v worried all the couples who may get married in the next couple years will be SOL because of the number of 2020 weddings that were rescheduled.
Not to steal your thunder, but we’ve started talking about rings, which I’d like shop for together/see in person, but haven’t really done much else on that end because… well, doesn’t seem terribly essential during COVID.
I think my sister thinks I’m a hypocrite because we did invite two people to Thanksgiving, my cousin and my boyfriend’s friend. Both are single, live alone, don’t really go anywhere/see anyone, and don’t have anyone else nearby so otherwise would’ve been totally alone. Not totally risk-free, obviously, but everyone involved felt okay with it. And I guess yeah, it is a bit hypocritical to say absolutely not to one risk and yes to another. But I really didn’t feel like dealing with family bullshit on top of COVID this year, because with my nuclear family there is ALWAYS some, but thanks to my sister I still got that experience even without seeing anyone.
How was everyone’s Thanksgiving? I actually had a nice time staying put (for once!) instead of traveling to see family. Our oven decided to crap out on us, but had the decency to wait until we’d cooked (most) of our side dishes. So we did go to the store yesterday to look at our top picks that we’d researched in person, and pulled the trigger on a new one. The back order where we ordered from isn’t as bad as I thought it would be (and way better than other retailers with the same make/model) so I’m hoping we’ll have it by mid-December.
My sister gave me a bit of a hard time for not going home to see our parents with her, she said I need to give good reasons for not coming home for the holidays. Which is odd because, 1) when she lived in Manhattan, she seldom came home for Thanksgiving and never gave a “good” reason, and 2) a pandemic is a probably the best reason I’ll ever have to opt out of the holidays. But she got under my skin and I barely slept last night feeling kinda bullied and guilty, even though I don’t think I have any reason to feel bad.
@Veritek I’m sorry you guys got sick, but I’m glad you, your husband, and baby are all doing well. It’s a shame you weren’t allowed to WFH. BG and I went on a walk after work one night last week and passed an office on our block with floor to ceiling windows. Unsure what they do, but we noticed three coworkers still at their desks without masks on. I was pretty surprised. They were at least spaced apart a bit, but yikes. I work with attorneys and some who own their own small firms were still going into the office and support staff had to go in as well.
One of my friends and her husband recently got it at a small, family-only funeral for her aunt. She had no symptoms, her husband’s were mild. Her mom, dad, and brother (early 30s) all had a rough go, her dad having it the worst. All three lost sense of taste/smell. Her dad still hasn’t gotten his back. Her brother still has lingering vertigo.
Just found out my cousin’s husband has it. He’s a Trump supporter, they live in Indiana, and TBH I’m not shocked it hit them first of anyone in my family. From what I know, they’ve been fairly cavalier. He’s been isolating in their master bedroom for over a week now. They’ve been quiet about it — I only know through my sister — and I thiiink some of the hush-hush is because they’re still planning to have some family for Thanksgiving, including my cousin’s younger sister… who is pregnant. Which I think is really stupid.
@hfantods The boyfriend and I started our “cook the world” last weekend and it was super fun! He mentioned recently he wanted to get take-out from a restaurant we went to maybe a year or so ago that “specializes” in a pretty specific Japanese dish that’s very hard to find in the U.S. Turns out they voluntarily closed for the winter to keep their staff and patrons safe. Anyway, we made a run to an Asian grocery store and bought everything we need to make it at home and some craft Japanese beer. It was so fun and dinner was excellent. I asked him where he wants to “go” next and we decided we want to stay in Asia for awhile, haha. I don’t know if we can make this happen weekly without frequent trips to specialty stores, but thank you for the great idea — I’m gonna have fun with it this winter.
