My dog used to have PJs when he was a puppy, but now he won’t let us touch his legs because of arthritis, so he sleeps in a pullover fleece without sleeves.
Anyway, my husband and I have these (faux) shearling jackets, and last fall we got one for the dog too, and took stupid pics. Anything for the ‘gram.
September 14, 2018 at 12:28 pm #795952Question to @kate – do you give your dog anything for the arthritis? Our oldest dog, a pug dotson mix, is approaching 10 and I can tell he hurts sometimes (stiff after laying to long or sore if he plays to long, etc). Stairs are getting harder for him. The vet said to try Cosequin (sp?). I haven’t tried it yet but am thinking about getting some and was wondering if you’ve tried it and if it helps. He can still play fetch like none other but it really wares him out now!
TheHizzySeptember 14, 2018 at 12:47 pm #795956On a getting things accomplished this week note:
One of our gift to his kids during the wedding extravaganza (since they’re all younger and out of state) is to pay for their accommodations while they’re with us. I just booked it this week, and paid for it. That was one huge stress off my plate!
Next up: Anyone have good suggestions on parents gifts – I’ll take them!
@Rangerchic, he has the immune-mediated kind, and regular pain relievers didn’t work. We thought he was dying until they gave him prednisone (steroid). He’s been on a very low dose of that for 5 years. They check his organ function and stuff to make sure it’s not killing him, but he seems good. He’ll be 12 next month.
I would say start with whatever pain drugs they recommend and just monitor his comfort level. You may have to try a few. We tried gabapentin (?), tramadol, and at least one other, but not consequin.
I think I get the side-eye from people for putting my dog in sweaters or jackets and booties in the winter, but it gets really freakin’ cold here and the salt for icy sidewalks hurts his paws. I figure if he has to have cold weather gear, he might as well by stylish and we might as well have a matching outfit. There are two Italian greyhounds down the street and because they’re such a skinny breed, they basically need sweaters as soon as it hits the 40s. Makes my day every time I see them.
My dog gets cold easily, we can tell because as soon as it’s slightly chilly he follows us around and sits on our feet or leans against us. He wears his fleece most of the time, and if it’s really cold or snowy, he wears a parka over it. I don’t think people side-eye a dog in a coat or sweater unless it’s like hot out and it looks like they’re dying for fashion.
TheLadyESeptember 14, 2018 at 3:12 pm #795976My little 6lb girl gets cold too! Her first winter was the year Obama took office (2009) and it snowed and she shivered so much that I instantly went out and bought her a little puff coat. She now has a couple of those and a couple sweaters in my coat closet and I have no shame in my dog mom game.
Ale, thanks for asking! I dated the guy from Match with kids for about 6ish weeks but we mutually broke up this past week, so now it’s back to the drawing board. I took some time away from commenting here on DW, but I am always reading!
September 14, 2018 at 3:36 pm #795979Funny story about my little dog – she’s a schnauzer terrier mix that was born in late fall and so her first year was in winter so she was never hot and never had to pant. Come summer when it started to get really hot and humid she didn’t know how to pant! She stuck her entire tongue out, out the front then out the side trying to figure this panting thing out. She has sense learned how to pant but it was kind of funny watching her trying to figure it out.
September 14, 2018 at 3:38 pm #795980Oh – and thanks Kate for letting me know. Sorry your pup has so many issues! I really enjoy spoiling my pups rotten like so many of us pup moms on here 🙂
@Rangerchic, thanks! He’s doing well for someone in his 80s with rheumatoid arthritis. He’s happy and enjoys his routine, including playing fetch at the park every morning. It was just bad in 2013 when we were trying to figure out what was wrong with him. I really did think he was dying. Big fan of steroids over here!
A guy I went on a few dates with earlier this year thought it was dumb that my dog has a jacket, and I’m sure he’s not the only one. He thought people need to “let dogs be dogs.” And it’s like, I’m generally on board with that, but it’s -20 out, and it’s stupid to assume that dogs don’t get cold. Especially cause you can, y’know, TELL when a dog is cold. You can TELL that something on the sidewalk (the salt, usually) is hurting his feet.
