@kmen Congratulations! I personally am a big fan of the short engagement. I’m also 34 and have watched a ton of friends get married and the one that was the least stressful was the engagement that was only 2 months long. It was fast and furious planning but she was so happy she didn’t have years to obsess and plan.
Mustangs are shit in snow AND ice. Drove my dad’s in high school and hit a stop sign because I locked up on snow and ice. Not a practical car for a 17 year old or for snow.
Also, MofV and I looked at another ring that I like even more. And he told his sister that we are looking at getting engaged soon and she had a wonderful reaction. She was very happy, so I think his dad might have just been overreacting a bit about getting engaged soon after her. Though, she might also be a very good actress 🙂
TheHizzyFebruary 27, 2019 at 10:30 am #833931My ultra confident FMH driver will NOT drive in snow. He’s from the desert. We went back to my hometown for Christmas a few years ago and it was drifting snow across the road and he told me “I’m glad we didn’t rent a car, I couldn’t drive in this.” I told him that he wouldn’t be driving, I would be. At that time we hadn’t rented a car and my dad was driving us.
We have this unspoken rule that when we are in my home area I do 99% of the driving and when we are in his home area he does 99% of the driving. That spare 1% happens when we want to try out the rental car because we rent fun ones now. When we’re in a new are we’ll share the driving with him doing a bit more.
Sent out the invites last week, already getting RSVPs back! Exciting times you guys! He had some family call him up and lay out their travel plans so I think he’ll have more people come than he thinks. That makes me really happy! They’re making a vacation out of it, which is what I had hoped people would do if they could. I have a wedding shower next weekend back home. This is the first real wedding event and I can’t help but remember how my Grandma won’t be there and while it’s such a happy time, it’s such a sad time remembering she is gone.
Congratulations @kmthat! I am mostly a lurker on this thread, but I am so happy to see so many success stories.
@veritek – that is very exciting about the ring shopping, and I am glad MoV’s sister is being so reasonable, or at least putting on a show so you don’t have to deal with drama if there is any 🙂
As a Canadian, who had a pretty snowy drive into work this morning, I agree the AWD or at FWD is a must in the snow. I would love more of a sporty car, but it just isn’t practical 6 months of the year.
As someone who’s driven in snowy states for 10 years with FWD, I think it comes down to how much you’re required to drive in the snow. I drive to work if it’s 6 inches or less, but if it’s much more than that, my job is flexible enough to let me work from home. But I can see where if you were forced to go to work (or had another obligation you couldn’t back out of) in any amount of snow or ice, you would have to have something with AWD. I for sure would have swapped my car for something else if my job wasn’t so flexible! Of course, there are a lot of pickup drivers here who don’t realize that ice is slippery no matter what kind of car you have and spin out because they think they can go faster than the rest of us because of the size of their truck.
*Ugh, edited because I read so many acronyms that I typed the wrong one.
February 27, 2019 at 1:50 pm #833949Congratulations @kmthat! That’s so exciting!!
My oldest daughter is getting married in June at the courthouse then having a reception at my house. Looking forward to that! And happy they chose to get married this way…more low key and saves a ton of money (we said we wouldn’t pay for a wedding but I am going to pick up some fresh flowers day of reception to decorate my house).
And living in CO, I have an AWD vehicle (crosstrek) and it’s a must in the snow. We had to pick up our daughter Friday night as her Honda accord couldn’t make it up some of the snowy hills (plus she’s inexperienced). So she parked it and we picked her up. There are a lot of hills here in the Springs and they don’t seem big or intimidating until they are covered in snow or ice.
February 27, 2019 at 1:54 pm #833950We have the same problem with truck drivers here! Actually drivers here super assholes as everyone here is a super aggressive driver no matter the weather so even though I have an AWD I try to stay home the days the roads are bad (scraping/clearing roads is a joke here). I DO NOT trust the other drivers here. There were a lot of traffic deaths last year from all the crashes…so much so that the police are putting out drive safe ads on the radio.
PortiaFebruary 27, 2019 at 2:46 pm #833952I remember once when my husband was super confident about being able to drive after a rare snow in North Carolina. We grew up in a snowy place, so he generally knew how to deal with snowy conditions. But North Carolina doesn’t get much snow so it’s not like plows were out in full force. I kept reminding him to be careful, drive slow, etc., especially because his car was not AWD, but he kept brushing me off.
Guess who got in a car accident on his way home from dropping me at the airport?
February 27, 2019 at 3:15 pm #833954I would say Salt Lake is more like Colorado snow. It’s desert, so a lot drier. The real snow is in the mountains. We had an Outback and I miss it.
Now I have a minivan, because of course I do. I just don’t go out when it’s bad. I should buy snow tires next year.
February 27, 2019 at 3:20 pm #833955@kmethat Congrats! Have fun planning, or at least as much fun as you can 😛
I was recently invited to a wedding in June this year. I am looking forward to getting a new dress as I have worn my other one to several weddings now and need something different. Both daunting and fun.
A bit of a surprise invite though as I am friends with her through our larger friend group, but not that close. She said she is inviting those whom she sees the most often, so I am honored to say the least. She is doing it at the local Danish Club, and she is Polish, so looking forward to the fun night and great food 😀
I have AWD and live in Canada as well, my first car, so I can only imagine driving a vehicle without it. I will most likely need to replace it in the next year as I am close to the 300k mark on it, and it is a decade old (bought used 3 years ago with 127k).
KateFebruary 27, 2019 at 3:35 pm #833959@Anonymousse I learned to drive in a minivan and then I used to drive it to school. People thought it was cool back then. They would like sneak out and nap in it, and I could drive a lot of people around. My mom also made me learn stick shift on her car and got tough with me when I tried to give up on the hills.
February 27, 2019 at 4:28 pm #833965I learned to drive a stick before automatic because my dad thought it would be good to know how to drive a stick. I actually ended up LOVING driving one! But here with all the snow/hills I’m glad to have an automatic.
And before I got a car as a kid, I would drive my friends around in my parents minivan. Once I was out driving my friends (all around 16). There were 6 of us. Ended up with some vodka (I was driving so didn’t partake as I was scared to death of getting caught). But someone stupidly spilled nearly the entire bottle in the carpet of the van. Sigh… So we took it to a car wash and washed the outside and put a bunch of that car scent stuff on the floors explaining to my parents that I wanted to clean it as a thank you for letting me borrow it. I think they bought it as I never heard word otherwise.
