I like my paring knife. I have but never really use my bread knife. I have two chef’s knives that I’ve had for awhile (same brand, different sizes) and they aren’t great. I think I got them in college. I like cooking and I’m ready to upgrade. When I’m at my parents’ house I literally only reach for the chef’s knife or paring knife. I’m find spending a little bit of money on a good knife, but want to get like my parents’ that lasts for years.
LisforLeslieMarch 11, 2019 at 11:10 am #836442Bridal showers – I find that most showers are when the couple get most of the stuff off the registry followed by cash at the wedding. But that’s for the younger couples. And nowadays, do people even have a second or third set of dishes? Some of the idiots I grew up with registered for tiffany place settings and such at $250 a pop going back 25 years or so. Never understood it, but perhaps they exchanged all of them and bought jewelry.
I’m all for a nice party, but it definitely gets out of hand and it sounds like for @TheHizzy it was more trouble than joy. Ach.
March 11, 2019 at 11:20 am #836443When I got married, just over 20 years ago, I had a wedding shower put on by my husband’s side of the family but we both attended. We were young and it was nice but I don’t think I still have anything from that shower. Oh wait, they also did a pampered chef shower/party and I still have my apron that everyone signed. I actually think that was the most special item. And I still have one of the pampered chefs baking stone.
I too am in need of a good chef’s knife. I have a couple from target but they don’t stay sharp long and I cook a lot so it would be a good investment.
Sorry about your mouse scare@L! One time, we had this cat I noticed was playing with something and so I went to investigate. It was a mouse! A live one. And it was def playing with it. The mouse was sitting very still and the cat was about 2 feet away watching. But the mouse wouldn’t move. I’m sure it was scared to death. I don’t recall how we got rid of it. But we never had another mouse. So – get a cat! haha 🙂
VathenaMarch 11, 2019 at 11:29 am #836444I have Henckels knives and like them – have had them for about 15 years now. I need to get them sharpened again! I got a set of 4 (because I was young and naive and didn’t know to just get one at a time) and the chef’s knife is actually too big and heavy for my taste. I love the santoku knife, though. The guy at Sur La Table told me it’s the best one for things like cheese and tomatoes, and I told him that’s 50% of the things that get sliced at my house. Haha.
TheHizzyMarch 11, 2019 at 11:34 am #836446I had several people buy off registry and not give gift receipts. Now I have 50 hangers I don’t want, a coffee thermal for a university I DIDN’T ATTEND and oversize nesting tupperware. I never understood registering for china. I don’t need $5000 worth of plates and bowls. I’ve seen the ones for $100/plate and like $75/bowl. And you want 12 of each?! No way.
Spatulas, flippers and a nice set of measuring cups. That’s our registry.
As for what the disaster was – it’s amazing how people can’t put their differences aside for a day and just get through it. That’s mostly what it was, and I kept getting tossed in the middle of the arguments. And the arguments were all passive aggressive because they are both non-confrontational people. FMH tells me it’s still fresh in my memory and it’ll fade, which I’m sure it will. I’m still thankful for everyone who came. My advice to anyone hosting a party/shower in the future – – ask for help and set a schedule!
LisforLeslieMarch 11, 2019 at 11:40 am #836449@Rangerchic – the funny thing is that there are several feral cats that are around. I see them in the backyard or near the clubhouse or randomly. I think they are able to scrounge enough food from the dumpsters that they don’t need to be mousers. I don’t think they’re getting food from anyone in the neighborhood: I don’t see several at any time in one place and tbh, this is the kind of place where neighbors would tattle. People freak out if you put your trash outside too early, let alone feed a bunch of wild cats.

March 11, 2019 at 11:40 am #836450I have the Henckels knife set as well, they had a sale on a kitchen supplies website, and I got a good deal. Know I am realizing I need a good set of steak knives, as all I have are those dull butter knives for simpler foods.
My boyfriend really likes to find deals on good quality kitchen supplies, so most of his knives are Henckels (the two figured ones, not the single, those are apparently lower quality. He learned to sharpen them with a proper knife block, which I learned to use a few weeks ago. His pots and pans are good quality chef cookware as well.
PortiaMarch 11, 2019 at 11:41 am #836452Ugh TheHizzy, that doesn’t sound fun. I’m sure much of the annoyance will fade with time, but that sounds pretty terrible…
I did have a bridal shower a few years ago, put on by family friends (that I’ve known practically since birth). I wasn’t expecting it (no bridesmaids and there was no group of “elderly aunts” around to throw it) and honestly I wasn’t sure about having one at first, but it was really a reason to get mostly-local people together in my hometown. It ended up being immediate family, family friends, and my MIL. As far as gifts, most chose to donate to the charity I had on our “registry” page, plus I got a few fun things, like a fancy yarn subscription. I don’t think I got a single kitchen item, come to think of it.
LisforLeslieMarch 11, 2019 at 11:47 am #836453@TheHizzy there was a wedding that lives in infamy in our family. The night before the parents had all of the out of towners for a dinner. The bride planned it, it was clear she had never planned a party nor had her parents done much entertaining.
The directions were wrong. They referred to a landmark that had been gone for 10 years.
There were no forks
There was no coffee
There were no tables and no chairs. Seriously, they had this gorgeous big house and seating for three in the living room and 6 in the dining room. There were at least 50 of us.The wedding day was no less chaotic, although at least there were tables and chairs.
March 11, 2019 at 12:04 pm #836457@Hizzy, your shower sounds like it was so stressful. It’s supposed to be a celebration, why can’t people just behave for a few hours??
I’ve been to a number of showers (both wedding and baby) for a few friends and all of my cousins. And I’ve thrown showers for my sister and my friend who got married last summer (I was a bridesmaid for both). All were chill. All were drama free. One thing I hate though- games. I hate them. I refuse to play.
The shower I helped throw last summer was actually a surprise for the bride and we just called it a celebration lunch. We had it at my apartment (since I have a backyard) and I co-hosted with another bridesmaid. We said no gifts (although people brought small ones) and it was maybe 10 people. Everyone brought a recipe to add to a personalized recipe box we bought off Etsy. Everything went off without a hitch and the bride was really surprised and touched.
Personally, all of my stuff is hand-me-down from my sister or my mom, or I bought it over 10 years ago at Kmart, so I would love to upgrade someday. I don’t need anything crazy, but some nice pots and pans with actual lids that fit and some knives that actually cut, and some decent matching dishes and silverware that don’t rust would be nice. 😛
TheHizzyMarch 11, 2019 at 12:23 pm #836461Yeah. There wasn’t enough food. I didn’t even eat that day as I was the last person to get food.
But I had a beautiful cake made by a family member!
