Yes, we got engaged in February. We’re both 35 and had been together for over 5 years, so we didn’t want a long engagement. My favorite part was seeing all our family and friends and knowing they were there for us, it was very touching. I was happy with all my vendors as well – I loved my flowers, the music was great, hair & makeup artists were great, and the photographer did an awesome job and she sent me some preview photos a couple of days ago and I love them. It also took me a while to find a dress I liked, but I finally found one and got a lot of compliments on it, which felt good!

    Congrats @K! 🙂

Poll for everyone: how long into dating did it take for you to say “I love you”? Who said it first? How did it happen?

    Just wondering!

5 months. He said it at Christmas time. My niece, 4 at the time, prompted it. Clever little girl.

I don’t like to be mushy, but I pretty much knew by the third date, or maybe second, that we’d get married. I definitely knew I loved him when a few weeks in to dating, he sent hilarious texts while on one of his dude trips. Speaking of, he’s leaving tomorrow to go on a trip with that same group of friends.

That’s great, @K! I’m glad you had an awesome wedding.

My boyfriend first told me he loved me about 5 months in, which would’ve been about a month or so after we discussed exclusivity. He was drunk the first time and it was via text. I didn’t say it back for a bit. He said it again down the road, I can no longer remember when, and told me I didn’t need to respond or say it back if I wasn’t ready. I didn’t say it back that time, either. If you go back in this thread, I mentioned a couple times feeling it but not feeling ready to SAY it. I think I said it back maybe 7-8 months in? In all honestly I probably mentioned when I finally said it back in this thread, so I could probably find out… but I don’t feel compelled to do so.

I told one ex around the 9 month mark and another one around the 2-3 month mark, we’d been friends for a awhile first, I don’t think I would’ve gotten there as quickly otherwise. So, it’s varied for me. If it matters, I don’t come from an “I love you” kinda family.

If you’ve felt it for awhile, just say it!

    Congrats @K!
I love getting updates on this thread and get so excited when I see someone has posted.

    @TheLadyE
    – it has depended on the relationship, anywhere from under 3 months to 6-8 months. The one that has taken the longest is my current one and I would call this the healthiest relationship I have ever been in. We became exclusive and started to spend a lot of time together fairly early on, but we are taking it more slowly to progress into a longer-term commitment.

I second @copa – if you feel it just say it. I said it when I felt it in my current relationship, even though I knew he wasn’t ready to say it back to me. But I come from a family that says “I love you” frequently. I also share my emotions pretty much all the time, so I couldn’t keep it in.

It was a few months but he said things leading up to it that were “soft I love you’s.” I already knew.

    Thanks everyone!

We had been dating for 5 months and we were on a hike on Colorado and he said it first. Although he still jokes that I drunkenly said it to him 3 months in while we were at a beer festival, but as part of a sentence and not directed at him. I’m not really sure if I did or not, haha.

Thanks, everyone! I knew a couple of months ago – actually I knew on his birthday at the end of July which was the same night my little girl dog passed away. I knew when he held me at the vet as I held her body and cried. I knew when he pulled me into his arms outside the vet at 4am when he had to work in 2 hours. I was too afraid to say it, though. (I come from a family that says “I love you” on every phone call.)

He shows me that he loves me, but we haven’t said it yet. Every time I go to his apartment he has gotten something special for me to have while I’m there. He found out I like pickles on my burger so he got a ginormous jar of pickles when we were planning to grill out. He saw hard seltzer at my house and knew I liked grapefruit so he got a 12-pack of grapefruit hard seltzer for when I was spending the weekend. He gave me kim chi for the first time and I said I liked it so he got ingredients for us to make it together so I could have some of his homemade. And recently he texted me that I am “the sweetest person he knows and he cares for me very deeply because of that”. <3

It’s been almost 7 months. I feel like I am not going to be able to hold it in any longer very soon.

I mean, there are other things too; those are just the ones I can think of right now. <3

    Congrats, K!

First “I love you” with my s.o.? We were on a date three months in, and he seemed like he was about to say it, then he..well, just didn’t. So my insecure butt mentally freaks out and I blurt it out later that night while we were in the car. Turns out, he was going to say it, and almost did, but wanted to wait for something more romantic than the bar we were in. A car probably wouldn’t have been it. Oops. Our first kiss was better, though…
