@DearWendy masks are not required at my gym but they are also not required in my city or county. The city and county I work in requires them.
That said, people have worn masks to the gym and no one has said a word about it. I tried a few times and when the workout really got going it did seem harder to breathe (probably in my head only) so I usually post myself up in a corner far away from people just to be safe.
@hfantods… we’ll also do eggnog and bourbon! Actually, my mom and I invented a lovely holiday drink a few years ago. She’ll make trays of coffee ice cubes. We’ll use that instead of regular ice for our eggnog/bourbon drink. Try it. You’ll love it…. As long as you like coffee.
@veritek I don’t think it’s in your head. I’ve been going to some classes at my gym, which is similar to yours, and they do require masks now that we’re back indoors. I haven’t had any issues doing steady state cardio like running in my mask. The HIIT-style workouts are different, I’m basically inhaling my mask. I’ve had to go outside a few times to pull my mask away from my face a bit to let more air in. I feel fine at my gym even though we don’t have the same warehouse space that a lot of similar gyms have.
@ktfran That eggnog/bourbon drink sounds delish!LisforLeslieNovember 10, 2020 at 3:11 pm #964233@veritek – slightly offbeat idea but have you thought about reading a favorite book aloud to one another? Just sitting in relative quiet, while one person reads and the other listens might be an enjoyable change of pace.
Also, maybe making the story of you for the small human. You and your partner growing up, falling in love, blah blah blah and then pics of you pregnant. Or just stories – you’ve got a little time, plan out some stories, take photos and create books on SnapFish or another similar service. Be as goof-tastic or serious as you like. You’ll have fun and you’d have something unique at the end.
@Copa we have two huge garage doors and if they’re open on a nice day I always try to get a spot by the door so that I can get as much fresh air as possible. I also just always feel short of breath now that I’m pregnant. Maybe not all the time, but a lot, and it’s a fun mental game to play during covid. Is this a cold/pregnancy symptom/covid symptom/am I just crazy?
November 10, 2020 at 3:24 pm #964237The difference in states’ mitigation efforts is so interesting. Here in NYC, we’ve never been allowed in gyms – or any public space – without masks (real masks- gaiters and bandanas don’t count), and we’re at 13 cases for 100k today. In the county where you live, Veritek, you’re at 135 cases per 100k (which is incredibly alarming and would warrant a hard lockdown/shelter in place here!) and masks aren’t mandatory in gyms. It honestly boggles my mind. Our transmission rate is going to surge soon because kids are in school, people are back in the offices, the holidays are coming up, the weather will soon be cold, and we’re so densely populated, but for at least four months, we have the lowest or among the lowest transmission rate in the country, and wearing masks everywhere was a huge part of that.
Copa, are you wearing paper disposable masks when you work out? Those are the only ones I can breathe in when I exercise otherwise I inhale the cloth ones.
AngeNovember 10, 2020 at 3:28 pm #964238My husband and I play a lot of games. One of our staples is Uno, we play that sitting in the backyard with music on probably once a month in the warmer weather (though probably not an option for you guys right now). Last night I started a jigsaw puzzle and it was funny how into it we got. We also have a heap of other games we play, mostly smaller games like Codenames: Duet, zombie dice, Selfish, smaller versions of Pictionary etc. A game night could be fun?
Mine are all cloth, many made by my mom. I’ve learned the hard way which of mine are better for more intense workouts. One woman who goes to my gym lost her job early on and started making/selling homemade masks to other gym members. I bought one over the summer, a gaiter made of thick, very clingy material. I’m not super familiar with gaiters, but this one really stuck to my face (some of the ones I see out and about look looser, more like how a bandana would fit). Anyway, I worked out in it once and thought I was going to pass out.
November 11, 2020 at 12:46 am #964250Most gyms here in BC opened mid summer, they didn’t require masks, but now that things are spiking again (up to 500 cases plus per day now), seeing more people wearing them at the gym I go to is more common. I personally didn’t wear them at the gym (but all other places) because social distancing was in place, and the gym has been really good with cleaning and making sure areas are spaced out, but even then it was a tad sketchy.
I am wearing them now though because things are getting worse daily.
I always go for bailey’s and hot chocolate as my go to winter drink 😛
November 11, 2020 at 8:55 am #964255Cleaning is important, but we now know that covid isn’t spread through surfaces so much; it’s airborne and is spread through respiratory droplets. Having clean equipment but no masks isn’t that helpful when people are working out, grunting, breathing heavily, etc. Sure, spacing out helps, and open windows help, but what helps the most are masks (and being outdoors). A gym is a high risk place. Those of you in areas where cases are surging (which is most of us!), please be careful – especially if you’re pregnant, or otherwise at higher risk, or have family members/ people in your bubble who are high risk. The weather is still nice enough most places to exercise outdoors, and there are TONS of workout videos of all kinds on YouTube that you can do in the comfort and safety of your own home.
We’ve got to hunker down through the winter and try to protect each other. This isn’t going to last forever!
November 11, 2020 at 9:53 am #964260Masks are required at the gym I go to for physical therapy and I warm up in the main area where most of the machines are. It is startling the last few times I have been there- many people have been working out without masks and it’s really turned me off of going there. There are signs literally everywhere that masks are required even while working out and I just don’t understand why so many are not wearing them, and why no one working there is doing anything about it.
We just got invited to family Thanksgiving, and it’s totally safe guys- the host is feeling in good health and is sure they don’t have Covid!
