Congratulations hfantods!! Tell us more!
@Copa BG’s mom has a legit fear. We aren’t even going to try to do anything next year. MofV’s cousin got married in a small ceremony and they’ve already declared the party won’t be until 2022. We are considering doing a vow renewal at 5 years in 2025 so by then maybe everyone will be caught up? lol
Also, if conflict free diamonds appeal to you at all – brilliantearth.com has a virtual try on feature and I think there’s also a show room in Chicago. It’s how we designed my ring – lab created diamonds and gems is their specialty and I have a lab created emerald.
BG’s SIL has joked that his mom has spent 23 hours/day thinking about BG’s wedding since SIL married BG’s older bro 10 years ago. BG then became her only unwed child. I’d be happy with a courthouse wedding, which I think would horrify her.
And yes! Conflict-free appeals to me very much! Or a lab diamond. I wish we had some family ring or something to pass down, but we don’t. I get so many Brilliant Earth targeted ads because we’ve done a little bit of looking online, haha. I didn’t know about the virtual try on feature and will look into it!
@Copa when I compared the screen shot of the virtual try on to a picture of the actual ring on my finger – damn near identical. So I’d say it’s a pretty accurate tool if you go that route! You choose skin tone, hand size, etc. It was fun to play with.
VathenaNovember 30, 2020 at 2:22 pm #968194Congratulations, @hfantods!! Gosh, I can’t wait to go to weddings again. So far we have three weddings to hopefully attend in late 2021. After this year we will all be needing a good party!
For anyone looking for a ring, I have been stalking this jeweler on Etsy and now on her website ( valeriemadison.com ) for years – for my pandemic birthday I finally treated myself to a stackable ring and a pair of earrings, and I’m getting some earrings for my mom for Christmas. Her engagement rings are stunning, she uses recycled and ethically sourced stones and metals, and it’s a Black-owned small business! I’m kind of sad that my husband and I already got married, lol.
@Veritek, I’m really sorry to hear that you and your husband got sick. I hope you’re both feeling well again and that your appointment goes well today!
November 30, 2020 at 2:58 pm #968195So I’m invited to a wedding in September of next year in Calistoga- my friend is basically renting this ranch, and she says even if 5 people show up she’s fine with that. I’m looking forward to it since it’ll probably be the first time I’ll actually go anywhere (at least that I anticipate right now)! If covid is under control by then I’m totally taking a couple of days and making a trip of it.
Also, some (off topic) good news – I took the last national board exam that I need to take for my license on Saturday and I passed! Thank goodness. I still need to take my state exam but I have to wait awhile to do that anyway. I’m just relieved that I no longer have to think about these exams again. And now I can enjoy the holidays and do things I actually like to do like read books and work in my yard and things like that.
Aw, thank you everyone!
Not at all, @copa. I’m so excited for you too! I meant that although we talked about marriage and our futures, it was all unexpected. To be honest, I was feeling a little anxious a couple weekend ago, because although I knew we were on the same page, it did hit me that there is a sort of timeline of family planning and all ?
As for details, we’ve been doing puzzles during the pandemic (lol). He told me he had a 100-piece puzzle done with our photo on it. I thought it was a little weird but rolled with it. I spilled out all the pieces and probably the fifth piece I looked at had the word “marry” on it. I was so surprised. I found it sooner than he thought it would so it caught him off guard too. He officially proposed. We finished the puzzle and called our families. I really couldn’t have asked for more!
So yeah the next step is to start planning. There are so many unknowns. I really feel for you ver! Ideally I would like a 150 person wedding (we both have large extended families and I would like to invite them all) but we would be looking at 2022 at best. I’m not sure if I want to wait that long and well it’s possible it won’t be “normal” then. I suspect a lot of 2021 dates are booked up and that would be a scaled back wedding which I’m ok with because —- pandemic!
Well, there are a lot more difficult things going on this moment. I’m just going to enjoy this very early stage!
LisforLeslieNovember 30, 2020 at 3:26 pm #968198Congrats on the engagement. As for planning, I say wait about 6 months and have an engagement drive thru/vaccination. See if you can arrange for a local hospital to give the first shot and your “guests” can pick up a cupcake and drop off an engagement gift (or not – it’s not a gift grab). Then 21 days later you have the stag/doe party where everyone gets the second shot and you hand out those little bottles of liquor and something penis or boob themed.
If they make it to both events – they get an invite!
I mean, it’s totally not realistic but wouldn’t it be nice if it was?
What a cute, absolutely covid-perfect way to propose!!!! Great story. I love it.
@moneypenny, Calistoga is my FAVORITE place to visit in CA. We order from Tank every couple of months. And I adore the Wine Way Inn. Both made it through the fires this year.@Copa… you can do something similar to what we did. We had a wedding brunch at Cindy’s on their terrace/the Library (18 people, mostly immediate family) and then a party with friends on our roof (PQM sandwiches, cakes from Dinkels, kegs from Revolution and lots of wine and champagne). Even all of that was still around $15k in Chicago.
Despite our smallish, non-traditional wedding, I wanted a courthouse wedding.
@hfantods I think that’s sweet and very appropriate for a COVID proposal. We did a puzzle of ourselves early in COVID, sent by his mom (of course). I can’t remember how old you are, but if I recall correctly (early 30s?), I don’t think have to freak out about family planning yet. You guys can always get married in a small ceremony (just you two or you two + immediate fam) and have a bigger party later on.
I’d be very satisfied with that kind of wedding, @ktfran. (We go to Dinkels so much now that we live around the corner!) I think BG wants something more traditional, which I’d be fine with but would still want to keep things smaller, I think. I could very easily pare down a guest list to family and just a handful of close friends. I don’t think BG would fare as well whittling a guest list down — in his words, he “has a lot of best friends.” We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
So BG has been best man in something ridiculous like 12 weddings. I know he at least wants no wedding party or just his brother by his side because he thinks it’d be too hard to pick a best man from his group of best friends. I’m on board with the no wedding party/just a sibling thing, but I think it’s hilarious because I don’t have this “problem” even a little bit.
