Wow, @LadyE, that’s a lot. It sucks. I hope you continue to feel better. I’m glad you got a diagnosis, and congrats on the promotion!! Sending a hug your way.

That does sound like a lot, @TheLadyE. And like it was probably pretty scary! But hopefully a diagnosis means your health continues to improve. It’s wonderful you got a new job and promotion through it all, though.

On the subject or COVID, I’ve been feeling increasingly under the weather for a few days now. We were out of town so I did take a test before going back to the office, before I felt like I had something. It was negative and two additional tests since have been negative. I thought my time had finally come after dodging it for three years. Might go get a PCR test to be sure, this is the first time that slight tickle in my throat or minor sniffle has actually turned into a full-blown… something. It could be a bad cold. I had a horrible night of sleep.

Congratulations on the new job, Lady E! I’m sorry you’re struggling with health stuff.

@Copa, it could definitely be a bad cold. I have had a couple of those and tested daily for Covid but still never positive, knock on wood.

Happy belated birthday TheLadyE! Also congrats on the promotion. I am glad that worked out. I hope you continue to recover.

I also appreciate knowing about perimenopause. I’m not sure if my lack of knowledge was because I never looked out for info on it but thank you Gen X for talking about it more. I don’t think I’ve ever asked my mom about how her menopause went. I am glad my mom was open about her miscarriages (two, afaik).

I am happy with how my husband and I have been splitting household expenses. It helps that we make the same income. What we are going through now is planning for the future/retirement together. He has a pension though work. I don’t. We both used to do our own thing at varying degrees. But now it is talking about joint savings and investments.

If you’re comfortable sharing, how do you do it in your household?

Still negative for COVID over here, but finally slept through most of the night last night.

We’re not married, so IDK if this is helpful, but we keep our finances separate for the most part. We have one shared checking account that we contribute a set amount of money every month to that we use for shared expenses. Savings and investments are kept separate. TBH I don’t know that I’d ever fully combine finances, even if we did get married. My dad was controlling with money growing up, and while I know my relationship is different from my parents’ marriage, the idea of not having my own separate account freaks me out.

I manage the saving and investing for retirement in our HH. We have all our accounts, including his rollover IRA, in one company, which I work for, and am actually required to have my investments here. We meet once or twice a year with our financial advisor and portfolio manager. My husband works for a small foreign company and doesn’t have a 401k. He gives me money each month to invest. I have a 401k and also auto-deposit monthly from savings account to brokerage.

The husband and I keep separate finances. He makes quite a bit more than me. Not quite double. We both have a 401k. Since he’s a lot better with money and with planning (he even does his parent’s finances), I send him a set amount each month. That goes to our mortgage / savings / big trips / bills. I take care of most of the grocery shopping for the month, unless he’s out and picks something up. We don’t nickel and dime each other.

I check in with him every few months to make sure we’re in good shape and ask if I need to contribute more or whatnot.

Our other finances aren’t combined, but investments/retirement are.

Vaguely related, but one of my friends recently got promoted and now earns more than her husband for the first time since they’ve been together (10+ years). It made me so happy how happy he was for her. Which is as it should be, but when I was dating, a lot of men were really weird about my education level/work status as it compared to their own.

I think the husband would be thrilled if I made more!!

@copa, one of my single girlfriends is well established, an EVP and makes a lot. She’s run into problems dating… I remember one guy who was pretty cool but couldn’t get over the fact that she owned her own place. We’re early 40s!

I make more, but my husband has his dream job doing what he loves, and flexibility so he does more around the house and with the dog. I did get that shit from some guys on Match, but notably NOT from my husband when we met. He was happy to have a girlfriend/spouse make more.
