I deal in vintage clothing and can tell you, the quality of the fabric and construction is so much better on older items. Even in “higher end” brands. For example, a Ralph Lauren jacket or sweater from the 1980s will be much better in every respect and wear better, than his products manufactured and purchased today.
People used to buy fewer garments of the best quality they could afford and then care for them with regular repair and cleaning etc. They would buy good leather shoes and have them resoled/stitched etc. at the cobblers. Many shoes and boots can not even be fixed, just thrown out. Shoemaking/cobbling is a dying skill.
Even tee shirts from anytime before the 2000s are heavier and thicker cotton and will stay nice for much longer. Plether/faux leather is ubiquitous and soon wears and peels and looks tatty. I sell real leather bags and many are very heavy sturdy leather and still look and wear well after 50 years or more, if they are cared for. Some have an aged in patina which is desirable to many people.
Many items in the thrift and secondhand shops now,are from the last 10 years or so and are the cheap, fast fashion stuff. So even the thrift world is suffering from this newer, poor quality stuff.
Buy the best quality you can afford in items and look after them. Buy vintage items, you can find unique items and also many classic and timeless pieces.Apparently Chanel bags used to have real 24k gold plated hardware and excellent quality, everything perfect, so if you get one from the 90s it’s going to be fantastic, vs. now the prices have increased to a laughable level and the quality is inconsistent. Stitching can be wonky, zippers crooked, things break, pearls fall off, and the hardware is just gold-tone metal. Buying vintage is a much better idea than new.

I was agreeing with Kate,Anonymous and Kaftran. Just another note on luxury goods,do your research so you are sure you are buying the real thing. And yes, an older version is best usually. Also, don’t knowingly buy knock -offs or fakes. Almost all of those are made in sweatshops and often, sadly, by children. The working conditions are horrific.I just got my under eye filler touched up to “fix” one under eye being more hollow than the other. I can already tell the area is less dark, but excited for it to settle in the next week or so. My derm thinks I should be good for a solid 18 months after today. Which, good. If filler required the same kind of upkeep as Botox, I’d nope on out.
WELL, it finally happened. I was on a Zoom call and the boyfriend didn’t realize. He’d taken half a day off work to go golfing and walked into our room, which is where my WFH setup is, in a t-shirt and his boxer briefs. I don’t even know that many people noticed, but still felt embarrassed. And I was so flustered that I wasn’t really paying attention the rest of the meeting. I wish we had enough space that I could have my own dedicated office instead of just a corner in the bedroom. Ugh.
Didn’t feel like starting a new thread for this, but…
Next month, I will be traveling to the UK for a wedding. The boyfriend cannot go due to work, so for the first leg of the trip, I’ll be traveling through Ireland (Dublin and Waterford) with a friend whose husband is also staying behind. I will be stopping in London for a few days on my way back by myself. One of my oldest friends lives there, but she’s got two under two right now so I’m not banking on her being completely available.
If anyone has any recommendations for things to do, see, or eat — particularly as a solo female traveler when I’m in LDN — please let me know! I’ve been to London before, but it’s been a long time. This will be my first time in Ireland.
May 11, 2023 at 10:38 pm #1120313Sounds like a fabulous trip @Copa! I’ve never been to London but I have a coworker who travels to London about every three years because her and her spouse love it so much. I know they really enjoy the museums, just about any museum really. If I hear of anything else they’ve enjoyed I’ll pass it along. Are you able to see/do anything in Dublin while there? We (husband and I) loved Ireland though didn’t spend much time in Dublin.
May 12, 2023 at 5:15 am #1120314I’ve been to London a few times but the last time was 12 years ago when I was pregnant with Jackson, so I don’t have current recs other than spending a nice afternoon in Hyde Park.
Sounds like a great trip!
