That was the brand. I think they’re kind of cute.
The sling bags gives me bad memories of the sling bags of the early aughts. It just takes me back there too much. But I don’t mind being off trend and uncool.

AnonymousseJune 1, 2023 at 9:18 am #1120632Clare V. is way out of reach for me. I’m just not that luxe of a person. I’ve got two kids, a budget and dirty garden feet over here. I don’t think I’ve ever spent over $100 on a bag unless it was panniers for my bike. I have never owned a luxury status purse.
I’ve never even heard of Clare V! But, I’m not super stylish.
IDK the style name of the bag, but when I was in HS and college, we wore those shoulder bags with the short strap. Those seem to be back in. My boyfriend’s 12-year-old (turning-13 tomorrow!) niece wears one. I HATED those. They never stayed on my shoulder, I hated not having my hands free. I’m a crossbody (or other hands-free style) girlie for life now regardless of what comes in and out of fashion.
This tank right here from A&F (https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/2000s-lace-trim-cami-53134859?faceout=model&seq=02) looks SO similar to the style of tanks we used to wear back then, too. Just need that, a denim mini skirt (also back in style, from what I’ve seen), and flip flops or Ugg boots, and I’d be ready to go drink the jungle juice!
@anonymousse, I won’t spring for a ClareV either. Way too much IMO.
@copa, I’m also a crossbody or hands free for life too. I used to LOVE my madewell leather tote. Used it daily for the better part of 10+ years. Smaller and crossbody is easier and better for my back. Same reason my work bag will always be a backpack. If I drove, maybe it’d be different.
Ooh, I wanted a cute pair of sneakers to wear with dresses walking around Italy. The Birdie sneakers are so, so comfortable. They’re roomie and work with my bunions. Excellent purchase. I ordered a 1/2 size up per the recommendation.
I have a pair of white On Clouds that I’m going to bring with me on my trip. I wear my Frye leather sneakers a lot and think they look nicer, but they’re not as supportive if I walk a lot. And I don’t want to wear those if it rains, which seems likely where I’m going. We’re hoping to do Japan in 2024 and they’d be my pick to click for that trip, too, since they slip on and off.
Maybe last year I was at a Nordstrom and stopped to look at a bag I thought was pretty. It turned out to be Yves St. Laurent and several thousand dollars. Which, no. I’ve noticed Quince has some quilted leather bags that aren’t a total dupe, but similar, for ~$100 and might finally let myself be influenced and give them a try.
I got into buying designer bags around 10 years ago when I had money to burn from commission checks. I did some trial and error first with pre-owned bags, then I bought some new. I bought the classic styles that have been around since the 1930s or 50s, and I’m still very happy with my small collection and wouldn’t sell any of them.
I think what’s happened in the past few years is 1) huge ridiculous price increases because companies didn’t like it that non-affluent people could buy their bags during the pandemic, 2) declines in quality, 3) influencers making young people feel like they need the new hot trendy bag that costs $4k, 4) super fakes, 5) Gen z keeping the pre-loved market going, and basically a lot of people have said fuck it to new designer bags.
A Chanel bag is now TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS and the quality is not there. They sell for half that online so they’re not a good investment anymore. If you really want one, buying used or better yet vintage is the way to go. Or the rich NY women are just buying the super fakes.
There was an article a few months ago in the NYT, I think, as to why designer bags have increased in price. I can’t remember the reasons. It also touched on the poorer quality.
I’ve always wanted to own a vintage, red Chanel.
Even the vintage ones are going up in price according the article. I do remember that tidbit. But I haven’t looked lately. A few years ago, it was $5k ish for vintage.
If it wasn’t NYT, it may have been the Cut.
June 2, 2023 at 6:12 pm #1120655Cops, were planning to go to Japan in 2024 too. We’ve been talking about it for a few years but needed to wait for Miles to pass on before we started planning as we didn’t want to be away from him for more than a week in his disabled, senior years. A silver lining to losing him is that now we can plan those longer, more faraway travels.
The one I bought last year in the Chanel store when I got a promotion, is a “mini,” which does hold its value and costs nowhere near what that large one costs. But it’s big enough to hold a phone, keys, sunglasses, and other small items. I have had no issues with quality and I LOVE it. It’s the “1955” style that Coco Chanel designed. It’s very versatile, you can wear it in the day as a crossbody, and it also looks great at night as a shoulder bag either with the chain long or doubled up short. It’s Kelly green, which surprisingly goes with almost everything. People most want black, but my wardrobe is very colorful, or I wear neutrals that look good with green. I would only wear a black bag in winter, but green works year round.
Having had it a year, I would say go for it if you have money earmarked or get a bonus. You absolutely do not need it, but it’s a beautiful thing and you would get a ton of wear out of it if red accessories work with your wardrobe. I love trendy things too, but for a bag I want classic style.
