Total change of topic, but what do you all think about the Lizzo allegations? Three women (former employees) are suing her for sexual harassment, body-shaming, and various work-culture issues, and three other women – a former creative director, a former backup dancer (I think) and a documentarian who walked away from filming a Lizzo doc after just two weeks – corroborate. Lizzo finally posted a statement on her IG and that I thought was kind of underwhelming, but that doesn’t mean she’s guilty. I’m a fan of hers, but not like a rabid fan or anything. I have followed and unfollowed her on IG a few times, and when I unfollow her it’s bc I get turned off by the overt sexuality, but that’s just me and my comfort level. I don’t judge her or anything. But if she behaves as an employer the same was she does as a performer, I could see how the lines are very blurry.
Anyway, it’s a bummer.
So I like some of her music but am not what I’d call a fan — I generally like her but only know radio hits, have never followed her, doubt I’d pay to see her perform — and haven’t been following the situation too closely. I was surprised to hear the allegations and think it’s a shame since at least some of her platform is based around anti-bully and body positivity. But then again, she’s in a position to curate her public image. Since I don’t follow her, I haven’t read her statement yet. I assume she denies it, and also suspect this will follow the similar pattern we’ve seen with other scandals where more people will feel emboldened to come forward if they haven’t already.
I love Lizzo. Her music makes me happy, as does her generally positive nature. She always seems joyful.
I was disappointed to read about the allegations and decided to reserve judgment about the lawsuit. I was even more disappointed to hear a few more people step forward. It looks bad, but I’m still holding judgment and giving her the benefit of the doubt.
There are so many people who want to see her fail. People who dislike her, really, really dislike her and it’s mostly because she’s a large Black woman who is proud of her body and shows it off. They want to take her down. So I’m not going to jump automatically on the hate train. I’ll wait to see how it plays out.
LisforLeslieAugust 4, 2023 at 6:12 am #1124215I like her music but I’ve long since accepted that sometimes great music comes from shitty people. Sinatra, Michael Jackson, James Brown – shitty people behind the scenes. John Lennon was a coke addict who cheated on his first wife. Shit, Jimmy Page and Charlie Watts and Steven Tyler and a bunch of other folks had no problem screwing, dating, marrying children. If a Zepplin song comes on the radio, I may or may not change the channel if I like the song.
I’ll wait to see how this plays out and I’ll decide if I’ll ever pay for her music again.
Per an attorney on TikTok, the complaint against Lizzo, which you can find online, does not match the headlines. I am not invested in the scandal enough to bother reading what was filed in court, but if you are, you can have at it… I have definitely done so in the past where I’ve been more curious. I didn’t even care enough to watch the short TikTok about why the headlines are misleading, haha.
We just watched the Ever episode of The Bear over the weekend and it’s the first episode in which I don’t hate Richie.
My oldest niece turns 18 tomorrow and heads to college at the end of the week. Eek! It feels so weird to have a kid (my youngest sister had the first great grandchild on both sides) headed off to college.
We’re all quite close, so despite her not being my own, it hits hard.
This was also the first year I didn’t go home for her birthday. She didn’t want a celebration.
EDT: I remember when my sister called to tell me she was pregnant. She had just turned 19 and I was about to turn 25, living thousands miles away. The first think I asked was if she was getting an abortion. Because my god, she was 19. She didn’t. My niece is an intelligent, sarcastic, beautiful young woman. I’m glad she had the option though.
My family preached abstinence only. My sister used the pullout method. I know my sister has struggled, and that’s with a good support system. Sex education is so important.

LisforLeslieAugust 14, 2023 at 5:19 am #1124720@Kate tell me about it – about 6 years ago I was talking to one of my team and it turns out I’m her mother’s age. That was tough.
Earlier this year I was talking to a different team member and I referenced something from the 90’s and he was like “uhhhh….” and I said “Oh my god, you weren’t alive in the 90’s were you?” and he quietly said “No. No I was not.”
Oof.
Yeah I was at lunch Friday with two people born in this century. One of them (21 y/o intern, the son of one of my peers on an adjacent team, comes across like he’s 14, has ADHD and can’t stop talking) was telling me all his fave movies though, and they’re all from the 80s and 90s. This kid… Friday was his last day and after lunch my friend who supervises him had to go pick up her kids from camp, so I was joking that I was going to give him a ton of stuff to do. But then he was sitting next to me talking nonstop about all his favorite sub-reddits 😭 and showing me memes on his phone. He went to the intern goodbye thing but got bored after 5 minutes. I told him to go home. It truly is like babysitting a child who’s a handful. That said, our intern last year was an absolute superstar and we’ve hired him.
LisforLeslieAugust 14, 2023 at 7:02 am #1124722I had to explain to some millennials (this was close to 20 years ago now) that discussing porn and similar topics while on client site was absolutely unacceptable and I never wanted to have to have this conversation again. Additional topics included: Racking up hotel & flight points because you had to travel to client site, weekend shenanigans, how much money you make or spend.
Prior to that project I had to explain to two youngsters that I don’t care if they are dating, but while on client site, there should be no PDA because I don’t want to have to answer questions from the client on their dating life.
Youths are youths.
