Part-time LurkerAugust 17, 2023 at 8:27 am #1124909As someone who still owns a slip and a pair of pantyhose, I’m not gonna lie, I sometimes judge the super short skirts I see, but then I remind myself that most of today’s younger women aren’t doing anything our mother’s didn’t do. Remember the micro-mini, tube tops, and J Lo skirts? LOL We may not have been wearing our club clothes to work, but some of us still wore some pretty revealing clothes from time to time. I think younger women feel less pressure to conform to some of the more conservative view points about women’s attire, and transitioning from the less demanding environs of a college or high school campus to a professional office can be hard. A tiny part of me is happy for them though because those super short skirts in offices are a tiny sign that things are changing for women. Yes, they’re still kind of shooting themselves in the foot but maybe when my granddaughter is ready to enter the workforce she’ll have one less hurdle. I’m not saying professionalism isn’t important (perception is definitely everything) but maybe in another 15 years women will be able to be on a more equal footing with men when it comes to expectations about their attire, hair, and make-up.
@bloodymediocrity – being self-aware and honest is a good thing. The new site looks great Wendy. Congratulations on the uptick in readers and your renewed enthusiasm!

@hfantods She was here in early June and I happened to have a work conference the week after. I heard quite a few men say that they went with their daughters not expecting much but they ended up having a blast and thought it was a great show. I actually asked a good friend who lives in your general area if she’d want to go together if I flew in, but she’s going to Hong Kong for several months for work.
I will also say, re: work dress codes, that I have some friends who feel like even appropriate office wear can look va-va-voom on them because of their shape.
Also, I can still remember some of the comments my dad made on what my sister or I wore as teens and feel like what he had to say was more inappropriate than anything we ever wore. (He thought tank tops were inappropriate…) Meanwhile my family moved a lot and I was always a little desperate to fit in somewhere new, and that included wanting to dress like my peers.
I had a nice weekend. Had a friend, her husband and 18 month old over. Hadn’t seen her since our wedding last year. Also first time meeting her child. I made a zucchini tomato quiche. It was fairly good, maybe had too much zucchini haha. What is everyone’s go to dish for entertaining or potlucks?
My husband is away for work. I think I used the grill to make a complete meal for the first time. Pork tenderloin and zucchini. I’m so pleased how it turned out! It’s like a really large sheet tray.
I often make guacamole and cheese boards when entertaining. We stick to things that are pretty easy. In the summer, we’ll grill and do things like burgers, hot dogs, veggie skewers. I will say, though, I like making cocktails at home and will go out of my way to make those for anyone who comes over if they want one. I discovered a new-to-me cocktail over the weekend, the kew garden, which might be my fave new refreshing summer drink.
ktfranAugust 28, 2023 at 4:42 pm #1125086My go-to potluck dish used to be a mango & black bean salsa. I don’t have a go-to anymore, really. In the spring and summer, it depends on what looks good at the Farmer’s Market, what I have time for and what the host is serving/asks for (like app, side or dessert). Ooh, a winter one I’ve been doing a lot lately is this Feta Salsa: https://smittenkitchen.com/2008/12/feta-salsa/. Right now, watermelon chunks with feta and either mint or basil would be really good. Add a squeeze of lime. You could also make them into skewers, but throwing it all in a bowl is way easier.
I actually prefer hosting a brunch because then I have the evening to clean/chill. For brunch, I do a fruit salad, frittatas (which are so easy) and bagels from a local shop with either smoked salmon or smoked fish dip.
Miss MJAugust 28, 2023 at 7:50 pm #1125087I hate avocados, but apparently make a fantastic guacamole from scratch. Go figure. That’s my quick and easy go-to. If time is no object, I hollow out cherry tomatoes and stuff them with a mixture of bacon bits, shredded cheddar cheese and diced green onions. Delicious, but a royal and time consuming pain in the ass.
