I had been thinking we could tamp it down by voting, but that was naive.

Although… I still think Sanders WOULD have beaten Trump. He certainly wouldn’t today. But back then? I think he would have. Yes… things could all be very different.

    Oh well.

@Kate and @Mark – I feel the same way. I struggle with depression at the best of times. This feels incredibly hopeless and unlikely to ever really get any better. If it weren’t for my dogs, I would have gone to protests for sure and would have taken my chances.

I still have hope. I know, it’s foolish, and my heart aches when I read or watch the news, but dammit I still have some hope. Because people are talking and even the worst people in the world like Pat Robertson are saying “not cool bro”.

Meanwhile I have a young African American woman on my team and I set up time with her to talk. I told her that I didn’t want her to feel singled out but I did want to make sure she knew all of the resources she had at her disposal. I wanted her to know that work was less important than taking time for herself and being good to herself and if she was just freaking tired, she should pause and take a breath.

    And then I just listened.

And then we looked at pictures of dogs with crocheted hats. My favorite was this one:

I sent my boss a text just saying I’m thinking about her, have utmost respect for her, the team has her back, and I appreciate and understand to the best of my ability what she is dealing with. Not sure I would have sent it cold, but she had brought up how upset she is. Our company does make a very big deal out of diversity and inclusion, and our CEO made a good statement and offered resources, but I mean, women of color are still dealing with ridiculous bullshit in any business context.

My team is spread across the central U.S. Since March, we’ve had a weekly Teams call. This week, the one Black woman on our team said she’d like to share her story and open up dialog. I so appreciated that she did that. Wednesday’s call went really well and I was so glad she did so. After, I sent a note to her similar to what it sounds like @kate said and I said I still have a lot to learn but I’m trying to improve to be a better ally.

My Covid PSA for the day. Things are beginning to open. People are going to their barbers, stylists, nail techs, etc. If you were fortunate to keep your job during this, be kind, be patient, and please, please tip well. Same with servers too (although the husband and I still won’t be dining out any time soon, however).

I went to my stylist yesterday. That simple act of normalcy made my day. I had sent her a large tip a couple days after I would have had one of my appointments 8 weeks ago. She mentioned it and said that she was feeling pretty low and that made her day. She said she cried when she saw it.

    Okay, some REALLY good news.

After months and months of false starts, applying too early, then having to wait, the system crashing and freezing, holding on the phone for hours only to have the systems mysteriously cut me off… And then finally reapplying after they created eligibility for independent contractors… only to then wait and wait and wait, being told I would receive word by the 19th… only to have that day come and go with zero news of info whatsoever…

… I awoke today to an email stating that my unemployment claim has not only made it through the process —- but been approved. And I had weeks to certify, etc…

I can’t express what a HUGE relief this is. I have pretty much been in a panic all of May until now. I can breathe a bit again. Whew…

    So happy for you BGM!

I have hope because i can’t not have hope. November will either be the cherry on top of this shitty year or hopefully a change for the better.

Oh, and my brother is feeling much better, and my sil tested negative for covid so she’s sick with something else currently.

Mark this is great news! I hope this eases some of your justified anxiety and fear.

Unfortunately my team has sort of gone the opposite way. We’re launching some new products and an (old, white, male) team member sent out a “humorous” video touting an Amazon launch of their checkout-free grocery store cut with scenes of mostly POC looting. No one responded. I strongly suspect our manager has already brought it up with him, she is not one to tolerate anything like this, but I do plan to talk to her about it at our next one on one. Especially because one of the reasons I left my previous position was the toxic, ultra right wing culture promoted in the office. My company overall has been very vocal and supportive on several levels, so I think this was one person’s dumbassery but the conversation is worth having.

Phew on the unemployment! Total unacceptable bullshit that it took so long and was so impossible.

Ugh, golfer.gal. He should honestly get written up by HR for that and have to go through anti-racial-bias training, or just get fired. Fuck off!!!

Don’t you suggest he get fired though. It will play better if the matter just upset you, I think. Express shock…
