I’m assuming so, since other colleagues are off at that time and she specifically told me that I should resubmit my request for May.

That blows. Can he visit you in March, you go there in May?

I am not sure. I just texted and told him everything, and he said we’ll talk about it later tonight. He’s in California right now for a conference tho so I’m guessing we won’t be able to talk about it til the weekend…

Agreed about the poor communication. April is when all schools have their Spring break and parents take their kids to see the grandparents for Easter/ Passover and Disney World. If that hasn’t been broadly communicated a lot of people are going to be pissed.

I do understand about a 3 week vacation being a bit difficult for a work
place to manage – even with a lot of notice though. And as a lead, I’m sure you can see that would be tough on your team. But I think if you could make a case to take a vacation and then be remote – or start remote and then take a vacation and then some remote and then come home, perhaps that might work. But you have to make it work to the satisfaction of the client and that’s where it can get tricky, especially if you’re crossing time zones.

Still your manager sounds disorganized, unappreciative and difficult.

I’m sorry — that really sucks! Absolutely, it should have been communicated to you MONTHS earlier if March and april were off limits for vacation! That’s insane. Schools are on break, easter and passover are during that time. What are they thinking?!

I knew that 3 weeks was a long time to be out of the office, which is why I had offered to work remotely half days throughout that whole time. Other than my travel dates, I would have been online and available. So yeah, that’s disappointing.

Wow. Yeah. So, three weeks IS a long time to be out of the office, but any place I’ve worked where there were dates blacked out for us to know we can’t use PTO during those critical times, this was communicated to all staff clearly by e-mail MONTHS out, and it would also be on the company calendar. And if only higher-ups can take longer than a week off, shouldn’t that policy be in writing somewhere (like the company handbook)? Anyway, sorry — that sucks. Hopefully you guys can figure out an alternative plan so you don’t have to wait until May to see one another!

@Copa yeah, the thing about only senior management taking more than a week off, it’s not in my contract and it’s not in the employee handbook. I told my former colleague what happened today (she quit and left last week) and she said it’s bullshit and she had never heard of that policy in all her time here.

Ive never heard of a policy like that either, FWIW. And it needs to be in the handbook if it is actually a policy. That said, I don’t think you can do anything about it, unfortunately.

It’s a nasty surprise, but think of it as a way to test your problem solving skills as a couple. Shitty things do come up that you have to work together to fix. I would hope that if you’re really upset about something, he’s able to find time to chat before several days go by, and that he’s willing and able to compromise to find a way to see each other.

Oh I’m not worried about him. I know we will work something out. It just won’t be tonight.

I’m just really upset because this trip was supposed to be really significant for a lot of reasons. And now we have to come up with a new plan. It just sucks.

That is SO disappointing and the ‘only 1 week’ seriously seems…made up. Have you ever taken more than a week of at a time before?

It’s just great motivation to keep on your side hustle until you can quit and move.

That sucks. I think you should ask for a documented PTO policy, or whatever your company calls time off. It likely won’t help you on this trip, but it’d be good for future trips.
