Update: “Ready to Block” Responds

It’s time again for “Dear Wendy Updates,” a feature where people I’ve given advice to in the past let us know whether they followed the advice and how they’re doing now. Today we hear from “Ready to Block,” whose friend John had gone off his meds for schizoaffective disorder and was abusing other substances. She said that he was making her uncomfortable and she was debating blocking him but feared he’d find ways to contact and harass her. Here’s her update:

“I did end up blocking him. I felt that I had no choice. While I feel terrible for John’s suffering, I just couldn’t deal with always walking on eggshells around him. I dealt with his drama for over ten years, and I am done. Luckily he hasn’t tried to contact me. I admit that I do have a lingering feeling of dread that he will. None of our mutuals have discussed him, which has kind of surprised me. I guess he must have burnt through those bridges as well. I don’t hate him. I do wish for him to be happy, but I can no longer deal with the walking on eggshells and verbal abuse from him.”

You did the right thing. Hope for the best for John and enjoy the peace his absence in your life helps to provide.
