I don’t think that’s bad advice, @anonymousse! The black blazer always feels stuffy to me (on myself! I know the long/oversized ones are on trend right now and have plenty of friends who opt into that even on more casual days), though I think it is the most professional option, but maybe if I buy a new, colorful top to go underneath I’ll be happier with the results.
I have literally never had a flattering DL photo. Which is fine. But I do always look forward to getting a new one because I’m like, maybe — finally! — I’ll get a good one this time.
Company headshot time is rolling around for me. Haven’t gotten a new one in probably five years so I’m kind of excited, I never liked my old one. Curious if anyone has thoughts about what to wear. I feel like every headshot that exists of me is in a black blazer, but it never feels like me. Is that still the way to go, though?
ETA: If this one is good, I’ll probably turn into the person who uses the same headshot for 20 years even if I look drastically different, haha.

I’m not a fan of digital calendars. I use Outlook for meetings/appointments only. I keep a notebook with my to-do list and deadlines for each month. I also keep some notes in there. At my last company, which was the busiest and most chaotic role I’ve ever had, I had one of those large desk calendars and wrote all deadlines down there, big and small. Final deadlines were always highlighted. My Outlook calendar there was insane with meeting after meeting after meeting, and eventually I started blocking off time just to get uninterrupted work done. But deadlines had to be on paper for me. I love crossing stuff out! LOL.
I have an iPhone, the boyfriend has an Android. He’s a big phone calendar guy. We have a shared Google calendar that I try to check but mostly forget about. I know a lot of couples who say they swear by their shared calendar, but for some reason I can’t.

My notebook and I are reunited. I decided to take the boyfriend’s car and drive downtown and the parking situation was a nightmare. I probably should’ve anticipated that, but somehow I did not.
And yes, I am kind of curious what our flight experience will be like. Our flight out of town this weekend is the first one of the day, so I’m hoping that helps. The way home will be a redeye, which I am not excited about, but I have family a very short drive from SFO, which is where we’re flying into, so I feel like we’ll at least have a soft place to land should anything go awry.
We’re going camping with my family while we’re out there and I’m hoping we’ll have terrible cell service on those days. I love being truly disconnected and always wonder if that’s what vacations used to be like for working folks. But I also know we’re the type to walk to the fancy hotel for a drink in the evenings and I’m also the type to sneak peaks at work emails when out of town.
@ktfran I’m glad you started your treatment! I hope it’s not painful.Nope! I’ve asked our IT department for a spare charger to keep at home along with a couple other items I’m still waiting on after going hybrid, which for some reason is taking them a million years to figure out. My personal and work laptops are both MacBooks so I’d be okay even without the company buying me one, but… I feel strongly that they should be providing spares of that.
I forgot my notebook/planner that has my to-do list and project notes. I’d be okay for the rest of the week without it, but strongly prefer having it and also have started traveling with the bare minimum for work (laptop, charger, notebook) when we take a trip that requires a flight. Juuuust in case we catch COVID and can’t hop on our return flight, or now there’s also the concern about major airline delays.
So for the first time since working hybrid, I forgot something I need in the office. And will be OOO for a week soon so need to schlep downtown to get it. I’m so annoyed with myself. I wasn’t planning to change out of joggers or put myself together today but now I feel like I have to.
Thanks, @LadyE. We ended up not going to the hospital as planned because the boyfriend was sick all weekend. One of my cousins was in town two weekends ago and spent one night at our place. She tested positive for COVID a few days later, after she’d returned home (her third(!) time having it). So we’ve been testing daily, always negative. But he was so exhausted over the weekend that he spent all of Saturday afternoon sleeping and yesterday he said he had bad brain fog, so he decided to lay low again. We decided it was best not to go to a hospital. The boyfriend seemed more himself by last night and have since heard his stepdad’s condition improved over the weekend.
He had COVID around this time last year, maybe two weeks before a trip out west to see my family and I was worried we’d not be able to go if I got sick, too. So of course we’re now about a week out from a trip out west to see my family and I’m once again worried about getting whatever he has.
@ktfran I’m glad you have a diagnosis! And a treatment plan.
So off topic, but the boyfriend’s stepdad is in remission from colon cancer but has had some lingering issues since. Those issues became more frequent, so he had elective surgery two weeks ago and at first his recovery was going smoothly, but recently it has taken a turn. He’s not recovering as expected. His mom is understandably stressed and upset. We are now planning to spend at least tomorrow at the hospital with her. If anyone has any advice for how to be supportive (this weekend and as he recovers), I’m all ears. I feel like I’m not great at this stuff and never know what to do or how to help.
Fillers are either permanent (silicone) or temporary. If you like the results of the nonpermanent ones, you do have to keep getting it. Otherwise, it dissolves and you go back to “normal.” It’s similar to Botox in that respect. But there are different kinds of fillers with different active ingredients and I’d need a doctor to break that down for me. The one that I think sounds interesting spurs your body to produce its own collagen at the injection site. If I ever go that route, I will take pictures and report back every last detail, haha.
I guess now that I think about it, I do know one person who told me recently that she does lip filler. I’d not have known since she doesn’t have Kylie lips.
I don’t think you need to feel embarrassed, @hfantods. Photographers use Photoshop, it’s part of the job. It’s not a reflection on you or your appearance.
I could stand to get a new headshot. My company does them so infrequently that a lot of us have quite dated ones.
ETA: I don’t log into LinkedIn very often but did maybe a couple weeks ago and noticed my law school boyfriend recently-ish checked my page. So I checked his. He’s still using our school headshots. We graduated like a decade ago. He has no social media presence at this point and I only ever hear what’s going on with him through a mutual acquaintance, but I’d bet money that his hair has fully betrayed him by now. I think it’s kinda funny when people are still using a headshot that no longer looks like them. An old director two companies ago was in his 70s but still using a pic from probably his early 50s.

I walk by there all the time! I Googled it and I guess it’s a plastic surgeon’s office. So I’d need to talk to a dr. about whether or not fillers would be a viable option for my under eye area, but I have a friend (a pharmacist) who is about as risk averse as people get and has told me to go to a plastic surgeon if I want that because injecting the wrong spot could cause blindness. I’m not sure I do want it — currently at the “I want to learn more from a licensed, reputable medical professional” stage — but want to be discerning about who/where I go should I go that route. I have quite a few friends who have been doing the Botox thing since their 20s — even one guy friend! — but if any have tried fillers, they’re not open about it. I’m not terribly concerned about my wrinkles so have never felt an urge to look into Botox.
Conrad Peterson Dermatology, which was recommended by an acquaintance who said the doctor she sees there has a very “less is more” approach and will bluntly tell you if she doesn’t think something will work for you. Which sounds up my alley as far as these things go. While I’m not totally sure what procedures I’d opt into at the end of the day, I prefer a board-certified dermatologist’s office over some of the medspa places I know some friends go to. (They’ve all had good experiences with facials, laser treatments, and even Botox at these places but… IDK, I just feel better going this route.) What’s the place on Southport? That’d be super close to me.
The only time I’ve ever broken out with red spots like that is after having an allergic reaction to medication/skin products (specifically sunscreen… thankfully it never spread to my face when that happened because the rest of my body was a mess for a couple weeks after that one). I hope you figure out what’s going on soon!
