Jealous of your trip to the Galapagos! I’d probably buy something there to be sure it really is environmentally safe/meets their requirements (should they have any — some places I’ve traveled kindly request you use what they sell locally for that reason), but will also say that that in Hawaii a couple years ago, we bought/used the brand Ocean Potion and I was covered from head to toe in hives by the time we went home. My rash developed so slowly that I didn’t realize until the day before we left that it was the sunscreen.
I bought Saie Slip Tint before my Mexico trip and really liked it. It has SPF 35 but I still put my regular sunscreen underneath. It felt very hydrating and has a dewy finish, which I like. I think it’ll be my summer staple on days I work remote/don’t need much coverage/don’t have to wear my mask too much (I was masked very often in Mexico and staying power under the mask was so-so).
I also often have a red nose and that’s my biggest gripe about wearing makeup and masks — the first place my makeup rubs off is my nose.
Alright I just flew for the first time since airlines lifted the mask requirement. Our flight to Mexico City, about 80% of passengers were masked. The unmasked people mostly seemed to be Americans — not shocking. This is my second trip to Mexico and away from the tourist partaaay hotspots, and the people there are so diligent about masking up, even outdoors. On our flight back out of the country, same high mask usage… but of course on our connecting/domestic flight, we were the minority in masks (maybe 20% masked up). The doctor we saw for the re-entry requirement brain swabbed us. (My first brain swab!) I’ve felt safe in Mexico away from the beaches as far as COVID and precautions go, and would recommend some of the quieter, more culturally vibrant areas for anyone looking for a warmer getaway.
And since I know there are quite a few Chicago-based commenters/readers, I’ve commuted this week using the brown and red lines and I’d say 85% of riders on my route are masking still. Weekends and evenings have been a mixed bag, but the rush hour crowd had been good this week. Not sure if all lines are like that.

Yeah, honestly, I liked going into the office the last two days. I felt super disoriented Monday, but yesterday was fine. But I forgot how much I like my work screens (they’re MASSIVE and I recall sorely missing them the first year of WFH) and what it was like to sit in a comfortable, supportive chair. I was less distracted and very productive. And yes, also feeling more like a human who exists in an interesting city. I can see myself opting to go in even when it’s not required.
The executive director said we’re definitely moving into a smaller office suite. He wants less everyday space in a building that offers the amenities we’d need to conduct some of our usual but less frequent business practices. I guess I’m not totally surprised, but commercial real estate landlords are understandably desperately trying to get companies to sign leases. Our current lease isn’t up until 2025, but they’ve already toured a few places and landlords are willing to let us occupy the space as early as spring/summer 2023 rent-free until our current lease is up. My boss mentioned that he’s heard that these new office spaces are swanky and make our current office look like a dump.
Rush hour commuters in Chicago have been good on the el. The weekend rides I’ve done have been more of a mixed bag. I fly this week and still plan to mask up.
With the exception of one coworker, everyone at work wore masks to move about the common spaces in the office. Which I was honestly kind of expecting from the group I work with. We’re a smaller office and most of us have our own closed door offices, so I’d be okay if people moved about mask-free, but I wasn’t too surprised.
So yesterday I swung by Sephora and picked up new mascara. I also grabbed KVD liquid gel contour (they had shade options in cool tones so I was thrilled) and a Rare Beauty cream blush. My makeup looked great when I left for the office this a.m. Guess we’ll see how they wear throughout the day. The downtown Sephora was not well stocked so I was happy to be able to grab the items I wanted in the shades I wanted to try.
Alright, I’m back. And it’s super weird and a bit disorienting. I was in the elevator to our office with a coworker I’ve known for 5+ years and we didn’t recognize each other for a brief moment (both masked up). Spent the first hour or so of my workday working with IT to get my in-office setup back up and running. I couldn’t remember for the life of me how to get my computer synced up with my two large monitors. My wireless keyboard is dead and a few other cords were missing so they need to order a few new items for me. So a little irritated to be back but not able to fully set myself up most efficiently but whatever. I’ll meet our newest hire at some point today, though I think tomorrow will be exhausting with meetings and onboarding stuff that I will participate in. It was sincerely good to see our executive director (an others) in person.
I have some lunchtime errands to run and plan to get myself a coffee from a local coffee shop because OMG I didn’t realize how many places went out of business in my immediate corner of the Loop until I got here.
I’m kinda petty so while I wouldn’t want anyone else in your office sick, I’d kinda enjoy hearing about someone like your boss being outed at work for changing up her story.
I didn’t get sick last year when the boyfriend got COVID. We did try to distance in our place but it was a solid two days before his symptoms really showed up.
I think it’s wild I’m going back to the office tomorrow. I don’t remember my old routine at all. I know I need lunch. My old work pants still fit, though they are not loose like they used to be. On Tuesday I know I’ll be jumping in and out of meetings with our new hire as well as joining whoever else is involved in his onboarding for lunch. Which is fine but sounds exhausting to be around people and “on” all day at the moment.
I feel like there should be consequences for coming in knowing you’re sick with something these days. Any time I’ve felt under the weather, I’ve treated it like I have COVID even though I’ve always tested negative. I plan to continue operating that way as I return to the office.
Yikes! Sorry that happened at your office, @Kate. We had a meeting today since we will start a hybrid schedule next week and our executive director kept repeating that we need to stay home if we feel unwell.
Pre-COVID I remember once catching some segment of the Today Show about how many people would go into the office feeling under the weather and, unsurprisingly, their poll revealed that like 98% of people or something had done so before. Which, of course they had. The hosts acted stunned. But yeah, hopefully people will do better.
I’ll look into those! And yeah, some of the jeans I’ve tried on over the past year or so, IDK how anyone sits down in them for long periods of time with the higher waist and the more rigid denim. I’m not someone who gets weird about sizing up as needed, but I’ve found in pants that sizing up leads to the wrong fit in other areas with a waist gap in the back. This used to be a bigger issue for me with work pants, not as much with denim, but I guess with jean styles changing it’s becoming more of an issue for me.
Yeah, I tend to do that as well — haven’t spent much time in stores the past two years. I also like comparing petite vs. regular when I can because sometimes I’ll prefer one over the other (I’m a little shy of 5’3″, so on the cusp height-wise) and they don’t always have petites in store. A&F was cool when I was in HS but I’ve literally never shopped there before, so I felt clueless about sizing… this order felt absurd with the various sizes and lengths I wanted to try, but I feel like I should’ve committed and ordered more, haha.
