Eh, I mean, I’m fairly private at work but still have a some pictures in my office. I don’t think they’re hurting my career or revealing too much about my personal life. They were on my desk before I shocked my coworker with my relationship status last month, so they seem to have gone totally unnoticed. The only thing anyone has ever commented on about my workspace is a wooden ranma I hung above my cabinets. I should get some fake plants.

All this to say, I think you can be private but still have a few photos of whatever is important to you. Your pets, your family, your SO, whatever. I had a coworker at my first job who didn’t decorate her office, which is fine, but she still managed to be insufferable about her relationship. (Like one time at a team lunch at a restaurant literally pulled out her laptop to show us a slideshow of her honeymoon. Omg.) Or you can be like me and have a framed picture of your boyfriend and still received surprised looks when you finally mention him.

If anything for @TheLadyE’s situation, I’d be more wary of a close friend becoming my boss at work.

Yeah, I guess I’ve always waited awhile to bring anything personal into work — took me two years just to bring in some art — but I wouldn’t think much of it if someone brought in a few photos not long after starting as long as they were work-appropriate. A former co-worker of mine was maybe 25 and had a lot of partayyyy pics in her cubicle, which was exposed to our most heavily trafficked hallway, and that’s the only time something like that has raised an eyebrow.

Hm. I guess I’m curious the reasoning behind that, Kate? I recently (past few months) brought a few more personal items to decorate my office, including some pictures. I do have one of me and my boyfriend in a frame. I don’t see anything wrong with it, and even with a few photos of loved ones, my office still feels pretty bland by comparison to other coworkers. I don’t talk a ton about my personal life at work — to the point that when Thanksgiving plans came up, the coworker who asked was shocked to learn I’ve been seeing the same guy for over a year — but a photo or two seems relatively benign to me.

And congrats on the new job, @TheLadyE! New jobs can be overwhelming, but it’s always a great feeling to be hired and starting a new chapter.

Thanks for the recs! BG has so many hotel points from when he traveled alllll the time for work that we can actually stay for free at a resort on the east side of the island if we want. I’ve read east is the second rainiest side, but even if it weren’t, I’d have no qualms spending a couple nights on another part of the island even if it means paying ourselves.

BG went there for work a few years back and did the helicopter ride, he LOVED it. Once bored me to sleep (literally) with footage of his tour, haha. Even without the recent safety scares, helicopters make me nervous… but I’d consider the tour anyway.

Anxious to get my PTO approved so we can book away! We saw some great airfare that I’m worried will go up if we don’t book soon.

I think we’re going to Kauai in early March now! Just waiting on my PTO to be approved before booking! It’ll be the end of the rainy season there, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for nice weather, even though my understanding is that it rains basically daily there year-round, but mostly on the north shore and almost always a scattered passing shower/storm, rarely ever the kind of rain that will ruin your plans for the day.

I actually saw great airfare to Portugal the other day! I checked their weather and it’s too early for their beaches, but I’d still be down if I can get BG on board. He’s pretty adamant about a beach at the moment.

He needs to double check today how much PTO he has, which will influence the trip. If he doesn’t have a ton of days, it’ll be a short Yucatan beach destination. Which is okay, the beaches are beautiful and I like a swim-up bar as much as the next person, but I feel a little frustrated at the idea of a Mexican vacation in an area lacking in culture. I had a great itinerary planned in my head, going to Oaxaca and then a beach, but I don’t think he’ll have enough days off to pull that trip off and the airfare is already shooting up quickly.

I’ve never been to the Keys! I’d be down for that, too, actually!

Getting caught up on this thread now that I’ve had to re-join society and am back at work.

@MG, I’m so sorry! I hope you are doing okay!

@Veritek Your future SIL sounds like a divorce waiting to happen. Yikes! I don’t feel all that bad for her. And honestly, it’s probably for the best if they break off the engagement rather than having to go through a divorce. You’ll have to keep us updated!

I had two pretty relaxing weeks off work. Learned I don’t do well without structure and routine, but it was really nice to have a break from work. I’m glad I was able to (mostly) leave work at work throughout. My work pants are definitely a little snug today, though!

BG and I are hoping to go on a warm weather vacation at the end of February to escape the cold, if anyone has any recommendations of where to go!

OMG! Congrats, MG! And yes to the holidays without booze sounding tough — especially if you’re still not ready to announce it yet and find yourselves in situations where people notice you’re not drinking.

I went to three parties this weekend and I am so tired and full from holiday treats. The third and final party was a cookie exchange with BG’s neighbors last night, where the topic of me moving in with my dog came up. BG and I want/need to know if it’s even an option for us to live there together (I have been warming up to the idea of living there even though a longer commute doesn’t excite me). It’s a small six-unit condo building and pets are not allowed, though nobody minds pets coming to visit — so we’d need his neighbors to either vote in favor of my dog OR change their HOA rules. We learned that everyone likes BG and thinks my dog is sweet, quiet, and well-behaved, so they want to say yes to us because they generally like us and think my dog wouldn’t be a problem… but they wonder if that’s unfair because they’re all unanimously inclined to say no to a kinda off-beat neighbor who they all know wants a dog (she didn’t come). (She dog sits through Rover, which nobody minds, but I guess they find her irresponsible.) So I think they’ll have to raise this as a formal issue to discuss at the next HOA meeting, which will be sometime in early 2020.

@TheLadyE That was a nice update! It’s always great to feel like you’ve found a true partner in someone. I’m glad you’re so happy. My dog is absolutely beside himself when BG leaves us. His concern is very sweet and hilarious. This weekend I’m having a party with my dog mom friends (the owners of my dog’s litter mates) and all of us — including the dogs — will be wearing plaid/flannel. So each little family unit is going to match. BG, my pup, and I will all be wearing red/black buffalo plaid. Look out, Insta!

I also laughed aloud about how stunned you are pumpkin pie is vegan. I’ve been trying to reduce my meat/dairy intake with no specific end goal (i.e., don’t presently plan to become vegan, and more of my meals are vegetarian than anything else in any case), but finding vegan junk food/treats seems pretty easy. It’s finding fast vegan meals (like, anything more than a snack) that feels way harder.

How did Thanksgiving go for everyone?

I had a blast with BG down in Florida. He went golfing a couple times with his step-dad so I spent some time with just his mom, which I was a little nervous about, but it was fine. I like her and have no doubts she loves me. She has sent me a few texts telling me she misses me, heh. BG and I spent the last night just the two of us and watched the sunset drinking a couple beers on a beach, which was my favorite moment of the trip. It felt like one of our early dates.

Well, I hope it won’t come to the worse case scenario and that you won’t have to be involved! I’m sorry the break-up still hurts, but I think that’s pretty normal. Don’t beat yourself up too much!
