Ha. Well he is a military brat so he is used to it. It’s so he can have in state tuition for college. Plus, frankly, this isn’t the best area and him moving away from the drug doing kids is not a bad thing. His friends aren’t, from what we know, the worst, but I know they smoke pot. Which is fine, for adults. But not for a 16 year old. If we thought he was doing well enough to stay and get into school here without living with us we would stay until he graduates.
His grades are good but he just isn’t likely to get enough scholorship money to cover being out of the house since living on campus is so expensive. It’s crazy because when I graduated good grades and SAT score pretty much paid for school. My bosses kids went to an insanely good private school (recent) , top of their classes, tons of volunteer work and extra ciriculars and they did get some scholarships but not close to what they used to dole out. So realistically he needs to go to school and live at home for at least a while and once my husband reaches GS12 he will need to find a job elsewhere as there just aren’t options here, and he needs to progress, for our future, his career, etc.
KFebruary 19, 2019 at 10:26 am #832908I got engaged over the weekend!! He proposed at the top of a mountain overlooking Lake George with a beautiful view. We met through our hiking group, so it was very appropriate that he proposed on a hike. We had 3 friends with us and I always thought I’d want a proposal to be a private moment, but I’m really glad they were there since they got pics of it!
We’ve been together 5 years and we’re 34, and he was unsure about marriage for awhile, so I wondered if it would ever happen. In the past, his ex had cheated on him when he was engaged, so I think that partially contributed to his hesitation. But once he made up his mind, he didn’t waste any time. He asked me to help him pick out a ring just 2 weeks ago, and he proposed the day after he got the ring!
Now for all the planning…we’re hoping for this fall since we’ve been together awhile. I don’t really want to wait until next spring.
Congrats K!!!! Sounds beautiful.
How did your FaceTime go, Copa? For the most part it sounded like a miscommunication (mostly from his end) but something your relationship can grow from. It sucks that your traveling doesn’t align. Enjoy your trip!!
I am curious —- for people who like to be surprised by small gifts, how do you express that to your SO without it being an “ask”? Not necessarily applicable to my relationship but just thinking about it now.
You just say that you like that kind of thing and it makes you happy. Also be clear about mentioning items you like, so he knows your favorite candy, or tea, or type of book or whatever.
@Copa, I hope you’re feeling better. I do think you should have asked what he likes for Valentine’s Day and/or picked him up a little treat or a 6-pack or something. Live and learn. It shouldn’t be a big deal. Good sign that he recognized his not-stellar behavior and apologized for it, but better if it hadn’t happened to begin with.
TheHizzyFebruary 19, 2019 at 11:48 am #832925Congrats @K! It sounds like it was a wonderful time!!
9 months is plenty of time to plan and I would have preferred a short engagement. If you plan a wedding dress from like a bridal shop those “lead times” get long about this time of year due to holiday engagements.
We FaceTimed, definitely feeling better. He’d just driven over 5 hours in snow at night and was tired. I was tired, it was past midnight when I got the texts, so I got panicked and a little weepy, cause how do you resolve anything by text at like 2 a.m.? He picked a bad time/method to communicate his disappointment, I took it probably as a bigger deal than he meant it. I might throw something small in the mail before I leave town, and was already planning to buy him something while I’m on my trip. I do wish it hadn’t happened right before we’re apart for a few weeks but I think we’ll just move past it and it was a lesson learned.
Congrats @K!! Sounds like the perfect proposal for you two. I love fall weddings.
February 19, 2019 at 12:44 pm #832933Congrats K!
Glad your feeling better about things Copa!
@JD – I see. Didn’t realize (though I should have) about the military thing.I am finally finished with W30!!! And I made bread Sunday to celebrate. Mostly going to keep eating clean and the only thing I’ve had that had a little sugar in it was a skinny mocha (also as a celebration – I LOVE lattes!). And I lost a few pounds so it made it worth it in the end. Just going to keep going.
