Question – how important are cover letters now a days?
Side note…Things I have paid off this week:
-DJ
-Photo booth
-Photographer
-Grooms suit
-Flights we offered to pay for for his kids
-Wedding planner
-Venue non-food money
-Hair and hair accessories
-Groomsmen attire
-Week long Air b&b for non-wedding time that will host his kids and us
-Rental car for the driveWe are about 100 days out, and I just got tired of seeing balances we decided to pay off everything that was a fixed amount. That is super nice to have it gone and not see a HUGE dent in the savings. We had been making small payments since Christmas on everything. I am back to saving money mode which is good. I head back home for a wedding shower this weekend that has turned to too stressful due to 2 people.
Outstanding items:
-Food
-Booze
-Wedding shoes for him
-Anything cake relatedCover letters still super important. A must. I see some younger tech companies not care as much but I’d say that’s more the exception and better to always include one. I am actually rewriting mine today. I have a general one I keep then alter it per job posting. Easier that way.
Congrats on the progress with the wedding.
KateMarch 5, 2019 at 12:13 pm #834600I think cover letters are usually quite important. Maybe if someone who knows you really well is presenting you at a company, they can speak for you, but otherwise I think you need a note that thanks the person for their time and explains who you are and why you’re interested in the company and would be a good fit for the role.
Cover letters are important! It’s your chance to tell an employer why you’re interested in a job and why you’d be great at it in a way that your resume can’t/won’t. AAM has good cover letter advice if you need it!
I am struggling from jet lag more today than yesterday. Fell asleep at 9 but still waking up obnoxiously early. I have little willpower to say no to the paczkis in our work kitchen today, and even though I brought a salad for lunch, all I want is soup. I’m hoping today will be the worst day.
ETA: I read AAM’s cover letter information pretty extensively a couple years ago when job hunting and once I felt like that advice sunk in, I was able to get away from the canned language you see all over the internet enough to write them in a way that felt very genuine and it made me enjoy the process way more.
I write cover letters on the regular for my company. So important. I like to start a little about the company. Why is this project (or position) important. Then tell them why you’re a good fit.
Copa… I’m glad you had a blast!!!! We booked our Kenya/Tanzania trip. We’re coming home on a Saturday morning but I have a feeling I’ll need Sunday and Monday to recover.
Sorry you were mugged.
TheHizzyMarch 5, 2019 at 12:58 pm #834607It’s interesting because there’s a debate going on if they’re needed or not. Post college they didn’t feel super needed because all jobs were basically entry level and I found my job via career fair.
I’m looking at job postings out and I figured I should spend some time making a cover letter and you guys just solidified that.
KateMarch 5, 2019 at 1:02 pm #834608Yeah, as you get farther along and there’s more on your resume, it’s really helpful to give a nutshell summary of who you are and why you’re a good fit, so the recruiter or HR or hiring manager doesn’t have to try to figure it out. You can and should customize it for different positions.
I wonder if certain fields don’t care as much about CLs? Every once in awhile I’d come across a job posting that didn’t ask candidates to submit one, but I always did. Maybe that was overkill.
@ktfran I got in Saturday afternoon. Felt fine on landing cause I’d slept a fair amount on the flights. (It was like 22 hours of flight time with a brief layover and I had major cankles, haha.) Within a couple hours I was exhausted and crabby. I tried to stay up for a normal bedtime but was going cross-eyed. It’s been a looong time since I’ve had eXtreme jet lag. I wish I’d taken at least yesterday off, so if you can manage it… I’d do it. Are you going on safari? I’m so sad I wasn’t able to make it happen for this trip, but hope to one day. Major post-vacation blues over here. It’d been awhile since I’d left the country and I realized how much I’ve missed traveling.I was totally creeping your instagram while you were on your trip. It looked amazing! Our trip will be safari. We’re staying at a few different private game reserves instead of the big parks. We’re also staying in a crater. NUTS! I can literally only pack 30lbs for the 14-day trip. And I can only pack in a duffel bag that will fit on tiny planes.
Opposite of you, I’ll have to go back and visit South Africa and wineries and I also want to go to Zanzibar.
Copa – your trip looked fantastic via the gram! Also the pickpocketing sucks but glad you were able to hang on to your passport.
I hate cover letters but have found them to be a necessary evil when job hunting. So yes, they’re still a thing.
The Hizzy – sounds like you’ve knocked out quite a bit for the wedding! Glad it’s all coming together but sorry about the stress of your shower.
2 updates from me, one dating related and one not lol.
1. Anyone tried an ant inflammatory diet? I’ve been in pain basically for a year in my joints and back. To the point I can hardly go to CrossFit any more and I gained around 25 pounds. Docs were puzzled and said I was fine. So I started researching and found some evidence pointing to either a gluten intolerance or inflammation. I’ve been doing anti inflammatory foods for about a week and I’ve lost 4 pounds and the pain in my hips and lower back is really easing up!
2. I’ve been informed the diamond we were looking at for my ring is “no longer available”. So that either means MofV has purchased it or that someone with my exact taste in diamonds has purchased it lol. Now I just have to stay cool.TheHizzyMarch 5, 2019 at 2:20 pm #834625@Ver I have been gluten free for 6 years now. I noticed I was always bloated but I didn’t have inflammation issues. But going gluten free I dropped weight and the annoying bloat I had.
When you sleep are you sleeping with pillows under/in between your legs to help with the back pain?
