One of my friends swears by The Ordinary.
For anyone who is on Instagram, I follow Dr. Shereene Idriss on there (@shereeneidriss), she’s a cosmetic dermatologist. I found her by accident somehow, but I guess she’s kind of well-known. Anyway, I like reading up on her recommendations and she doesn’t just focus on higher end stuff. She talks about what she thinks people actually need and what’s just a gimmick (pretty sure she’s mentioned eye cream), what’s pregnancy safe and what’s not, etc. I also think she’s funny.
ETA: @hfantods My dermatologist likes/recommends CeraVe. I use the kind that comes in a tub and it’s great for my dry winter skin. My derm doesn’t specifically focus on the cosmetic side of things, if that matters to you, I only go annually for skin checks because I used to go to tanning beds in college, but it gets his seal of approval notwithstanding. Oh! And! I have also done the Accutane thing. Two rounds about 10 years apart, the most recent time being like… 7-8 years ago. My lips feel like they never went back to normal, tbh, and I swear my Aquaphor for them. I opt into oil-based cleansing (I use/like Drunk Elephant Slaai) and follow it with a water-based cleanser (I use Cetaphil). Works well for me, doesn’t leave my skin dry at all. I can’t stand any form of cleanser that leaves my skin feeling tight after, which has been my experience with a lot of them.
These are all good products people are mentioning. The most important thing is sunscreen, and then introducing these anti-aging products as early as possible. Moisturizer is important to give you soft, plumped skin and seal everything in, but once you’re in your 30s, it should be working in tandem with serums.
TheLadyEDecember 8, 2020 at 3:24 pm #969402I really, really like Origins Night-A-Mins (I use the oil-free one since my skin can get oily) for my face at night, so that’s what I use even though it’s mid-range, I guess you could say – not drugstore. I vacillate between eye creams. I used to shell out major bucks for Rodan + Fields but that was stupid because I was, like, 31 and had zero wrinkles (still don’t have wrinkles but don’t want any!). It’s the dark spots that I need to get rid of at this point. And like Ver, I’m a redhead – I’ve never tanned, I go swimming a few times every summer (with SPF!) but I don’t “lay out” and I try to stay out of the sun.
Has anyone used Kiehl’s? It’s super expensive and I just wondered if it was really worth it. Right now I’m using a Mario Badescu toner and eye cream because I needed a refill and they were on sale at Ulta.
Copa, I will look up Ole Henriksen too, thanks for the recommendation! And I’m looking up The Ordinary now.
TheLadyEDecember 8, 2020 at 3:29 pm #969406Omg. I’m looking up The Ordinary on Ulta’s website and don’t even know where to start. I feel like I have to be a chemist to make sense of these serums! Goodness.
They’re not expensive, either. I’m kicking myself for not investing in these sooner. https://www.ulta.com/brand/ordinary?N=1z12lx1Z1kqweid
Yeah when I use up my Drunk Elephant stuff from before Accutane I’m going to try The Ordinary. Kinder to the budget.
FWIW, my dermatologist said you can’t really make the dark spots go away faster. It’s just time. But you want to keep your skin clean to avoid breakouts which restart your healing process. I’m not sure where your dark spots at from TheLadyE.
TheLadyEDecember 8, 2020 at 3:38 pm #969410I have no idea either; I just noticed them one day! I have 1-2 on each cheek. I have always gotten freckles in the spring/summer so they may have been leftover from that, I guess? IDK. That and my increasing white hair are the first real signs of aging I’ve seen (other than the fact that I can’t recover from drinking as easily, lol).
AngeDecember 8, 2020 at 3:45 pm #969413I use the ordinary Retinol and niacinamide and I’ve had good results with them for anti-ageing and for tightening up my texture (I struggle with the pores around my nose). I use the Retinoid in squalane and I don’t love the oily texture but I like how it works. They do another one that I think is in more of a cream that I want to try next.
One thing I do at night is seal in all my products with a sleeping mask, it really helps seal everything in and add an extra layer of good stuff to work while you sleep.
Yeahhh, Drunk Elephant is not very budget conscious. I bought a few of their products to try earlier this year, the Slaii oil cleansing balm, a vitamin C serum, and marula oil (which Dr. Idriss claims is great for dry skin since it helps lock in moisture). I used to use the Josie Maran cleansing oil, but prefer Slaii. I don’t need to use a ton so I find it lasts awhile for me, so I’ll repurchase. I dislike their vitamin C serum (it was sticky/tacky and pricier than Ole Henriksen) and don’t notice a difference when I use the marula oil.
I’ve had stray white hairs for… awhile. I do notice more and more, but I don’t think it’s that bad and it doesn’t bother me. My sister is a couple years older and her whites seem to grow in clusters, so hers is more noticeable.
December 8, 2020 at 4:25 pm #969426I am almost 30 (next year, woo!) and have dealt with acne prone skin since I was 12. I have done some over the counter products as prescribed by my doctor to help reduce bacteria built up and regeneration of skin cells (retin-a). I am currently dealing with a bad break out that hasn’t really gone away for the last month, usually around my chin/mouth area.
I have found though that typically a cleanser (salicylic acid based) in the morning and evening, then some exfoliation a couple times a week, and I then use a retin-a cream at night on trouble spots/breakouts, and moisturizer during the day. When I was more active outside with hiking and running I will use an SPF moisturizer. I also just got some caffeine based eye cream to help with puffiness under my eyes. Unfortunately I inherited it from my mom, so hoping to see some improvement with that over the next month.
