Another thing I’m really into right now is bodysuits from Amazon. Yeah, I like Amazon, kill me. I support the local businesses but they don’t sell bodysuits or value outerwear. Anyway, it reminds me of 1994 when I wore bodysuits with Levi’s mom jeans (550s maybe?). I feel like a high-waisted Jean with a bodysuit is easy and flattering on a middle-aged woman like myself. They have all kinds of colors and necklines so there’s something for everyone.
We’re not big Valentine’s Day people, so it’ll be low key. But there will be wine! And flourless chocolate cake! I got him a card and a small gift. He asked if I’d be up for going out for a single drink on a patio under a heat lamp. I told him I’d consider it when he asked a few weeks ago, but OMG the high today is 6 degrees. I’m so sick of this winter. I’ve been planning a national park camping trip that seems like a longshot just to have something to focus on and even pretend to look forward to. Ha.
@ktfran, are those joggers true to size? I don’t own any joggers but want a pair. I did buy one pair last month from The Gap that I returned. I got my usual size there, but didn’t like the fit. The next size up did not look good on me.I’ve also learned on TikTok that skinny jeans are going out of style.
Yeah, Gen Z says you can’t wear a side part or skinny jeans anymore. I do have some of the straight-leg ones that they wear, but I like skinny better.
I saw a tik tok where a millennial woman was explaining that Gen Z is too young to have “FuBu’s, or hips,” so they don’t get it.
Wow, homemade pasta, MJ!!
We got takeout dinner from a nicer restaurant. I got French onion soup. They put the bread and broiled cheese in a separate container from the hot soup and it was so good! We exchanged cards today.
Yeah, I remember when skinny jeans came into style in the mid 2000s and thought it was so weird, but now I don’t really know what else to wear. I have some straight jeans too. I’m really not sure if I could ever pull off mom jeans. Also I like my side part!!
I pretty much only have skinny jeans at this point. Maybe an old pair of bootcut and trouser leg jeans in the back of the closet that I don’t really reach for. I like the look of some of the straight leg/mom jeans/boyfriend jeans I see when I pass storefronts on walks and will probably try to find a pair that works for me. Low rise flare jeans were in style when I was in high school and I remember resisting the shift toward skinny jeans. But now I prefer them. I can get on board with clothes changing over the years, but the side part vs. middle part thing is stupid to me. Where you part your hair should be a face shape/haircut thing. I used to have a deep side part back in college, back when those side swept bangs that you could pin back into a poof were cool. It’s still a side part, I guess, but not as deep. Anyway, guess I’m “old” now with my side part and skinny jeans. Oh well!
Totally not about to change my entire wardrobe on what GenZ thinks is cool. First, my hair won’t do a middle part without extensive blow drying and product. I let the part fall naturally. Also not sure how good a pixie would look with a middle part. Secondly, there are lots of trends that look ridiculous on me. I’m a much bigger fan of dressing for your body type. And the older I get, the more streamlined I prefer to be. Hence lots of black and grays and I’ve been mentioning, and cream plus my leopard print flats. It makes packing for travel so much easier. I don’t like checking luggage so the less shoes I need, the better. Well, when I get to travel again. Some day. I’m hoping for maybe October.
I hate low rise jeans. I also don’t like boot cut/flare. Those really only look good with heels and if you do where them with flats or tennis shoes, they drag on the ground and get gross. Not cool for a walking city like Chicago. I suppose there are some looser straight leg jeans that look good, but I think you’d have to really search to find a pair that looks great.
@copa, I’ll ask the Pilates instructor about sizing Tuesday for the joggers. I got the leggings. I did order a small instead of my usual x-small. Glad I did! My jeans still fit, so it’s not a covid weight gain thing.
My hair wants to part on the left. And I think the highlights are placed with that in mind. For a young, fresh, symmetrical face, sure, part in the middle, but most people probably look better with an offset part and some volume.
Also, yeah, there’s a lot to be said for a jean that won’t touch the ground and get wet, when you live in a messy climate. Skinny jeans tuck right into boots.
I do have this one pair of high-waisted straight leg distressed jeans from Target that are very comfy and a little cropped so they look cute with the low Ugg’s or even a combat boot. I can get on board with that style, but it doesn’t need to replace skinny jeans.
TheLadyEFebruary 15, 2021 at 1:30 am #1029305Yep, I totally agree with KTFran – the older I get, the more I want to dress for my body type/personal sense of style than whatever is “in style” in the moment. My body type is so unique: very short, apple shape, curvy – I look very similar to my mother and her mother before her. It is what it is, and a lot of different styles just don’t work on me at all – not the least of which is because I’m under 5 feet tall. I feel so much better wearing something that flatters me than trying to pull something off that I can’t.
All my jeans are skinny jeans/jeggings, too. Well, to be honest, with my COVID weight all I’m wearing are leggings or yoga pants right now, but I’m hoping as spring gets here and I can be more active I can drop the COVID weight and get back into my jeggings that I’ve been fitting into fine for the last couple of years.
Oh gosh, I remember when I was in junior high/high school the low rise/flare jeans were in style and that was a nightmare for me being so short. They ALWAYS dragged on the ground and got gross. This was when I was wearing heels every day all the time (lol, the energy of youth!) and they still did it.
LisforLeslieFebruary 15, 2021 at 7:25 am #1029308If you’ve ever seen a group of high schoolers on a tour you can see the problem with dressing based on trend and not your body. Some girls look fantastic and then there is everyone else, all wearing clothes that are just unflattering. And based on current trends – all of the guys look stupid with their skinny jeans and saggy butts.
I am fat so skinny jeans … nah thanks. I have a pair of wide leg jeans with a sash belt that are adorable and comfortable. They fulfill one of my work from home requirements (established long before lockdown) – pants with a button.
Before lockdown last year I bought a second pair (a year later!) on sale, ready for hemming once life goes back to normal.
The low-rise boot-cut jeans from 2007 are NOT back, as far as I know. They probably will be, but not right now. It’s the high-waisted mom jeans that I wore in the 90s as a teen, and they’d dig into your belly button when you sat down. They didn’t have stretch. They look cute though, IMO. You can get them now with some stretch, and they can look flattering if you find the right ones. Though that’s a big challenge right now since you can’t go to stores and try on.
Wider-leg jeans are in now, too, L.
Now, I will say that what you think looks good on your body is often *influenced* by trends. Like, I remember my mom freaking out about skinny jeans coming into fashion because she feels she’s pear-shaped. You used to hear that boot-cut jeans were best on that kind of body because they balanced out your hips (remember What Not To Wear?). But she tried on skinny jeans, realized they looked cute, and now is worried about them going out of style.
But like, in two years if skinny jeans are really out of style (for now), I’m not going to keep wearing them, because I don’t want to look like one of those women clinging to old styles and looking out of date. Like someone in 2016, say, still wearing low-rise boot cut with a chunky shoe. Skinny jeans can also be pretty tight and constricting on your legs, especially in warmer weather. I definitely can’t stand wearing them in summer, but I could see wearing a lightweight pair of straight-leg jeans that aren’t clingy.
