I want to put in a plug for taking your backpack off on the train and holding it by your side. People with backpacks are whacking everyone and taking up more space than they realize. Backpacks should come off unless there’s a health condition that prevents it.

Oh, absolutely! I hold by my side or between my legs. The handles that make it more like a tote are so helpful for that.

I might not take it off on a non-crowded bus, but I’m def aware of what I’m doing and will adjust accordingly.

I will say, people who keep giant tote bags on their shoulders are also a problem. A lot of times, you’re slamming them into the heads of people sitting. That’s on planes too.

I wanted the Rowledge! I asked for a backpack for Christmas. All the Lo & Sons bags were on sale, and I told my mom and sister that I’d pay for a chunk of the backpack if they got me that one because it still wasn’t cheap. They got me the smaller, cheaper one. It’s still a nice bag, but it’s like playing Tetris to get all my stuff for a workday in there. And if I want to bring a book with me, I have to put my lunch in a separate bag (not a huge deal, I just don’t like toting multiple bags with me on the el if I can help it).

Copa, maybe you can sell the one you got for Christmas and buy the ones you really wanted? I’d be annoyed having to carry two bags as well. I just cleaned out my closet and sent some stuff to ThreadUp for re-sale (probably not the best way to earn money through re-selling, but it’s super convenient). I had a Rag&Bone hat (bought on sale, but not cheap) that sadly never fit and was a final sale so I couldn’t return in. I just sent it to ThreadUp yesterday and I hope I get a little bit of $ from that.

I only recently bought the Rowledge. The husband broke my older backpack while vacuuming… it ate my strap. I wanted something a little more streamlined anyway and had been looking for awhile. So, thanks husband!

Yeah, I’ve thought about doing that. I’ve been selling things on Poshmark for a couple years, so I already have a place to list it. I wanted the holiday sale price! I check the website from time to time to see if I can get a better deal on the one I wanted. I have a couple Lo & Sons bags (the OMG, which seems to not exist anymore, and a weekender bag) and the prices have definitely gone up since my last purchase 5-6 years ago.

I like the rowledge too, it’s a bit beyond what I’d spend (purely because it likely deserves better care than I’d ever commit to giving it) but it’s definitely fancy. All my backpacks are free merch from the sports I work for so as you can imagine they’re very sport-oriented and designed to hold plenty of stuff. I don’t even have a laptop for work anymore, just a surface tablet. The biggest thing I carry now is my water bottle.

Oh, if I were in a sports-related field or wanted something more athletic, I’d go for a different look for sure. I’ll keep my eye out.

I was also checking out Tumi’s, but those cost even more.

I also have a Patagonia that’s packable and can be used as a backpack or tote. It worked so well on safari in Africa and now I use it for all longer travel. It worked great in the Galapagos too. In Kenya/Tanzania, all I had was that and a small duffel for two weeks due to the weight limit of the tiny planes we were using to get from place to place. It was so freeing!

Ok so my husband works in an athletic field and is often traveling and going to sporting events. Like you, he uses a tablet with a keyboard. He has had this Coach backpack for a few years and always says how much he loves it and how perfect it is. I’m NOT saying spend this much on a backpack, just that the shape and the structure of it works perfectly for him in his field. Fits a change of clothes or extra layer, water bottle, sunscreen, all the stuff. And it looks good but not over the top.

That Coach bag is drool-worthy. I love the inside.

I don’t do direct sport work now I have my new job, I’m a regular old office jockey so I don’t need to carry nearly as much as I used to. Now it’s just personal items, wallet and my tablet.

This is what I currently have, it’s too much: https://www.highsierra.com.au/backpacks/academy-2.0-laptop-bp/hs-135040-1041.html

Oh ok, that backpack looks like it holds a ton and you don’t need that.

Idk, I avoid a backpack because I worry about a sweaty back. I’m currently using a medium LL Bean Boat & Tote that has “Finance” embroidered on it, which my friend gave me. It’s pretty small and doesn’t go easily over the shoulder. Eventually I’ll need to go back to a standard work tote but no idea what to get.

That’s the only thing I hate about my backpack when I walk home. I do get a sweaty back. But there’s no way, with my lower back problems, I could do a tote.

I typically take the bus into the office, which takes about 20 minutes, and walk the 2.8 miles home, which takes about 40. I’ve made it in 35 though.
