I’m sorry to hear about your loss, @ktfran, and what’s going on with your niece.

I say get the shot. You may not even have to lie. I was on my Monday morning call earlier with my department, most of whom are in the Springfield area, and per my coworkers, the big sites set up around there have plenty of appointments open and people who want a vaccine but are not yet eligible can somewhat easily do so at the end of the day. My boss’s theory is that some eligible people make multiple appointments trying to get in as fast as they can then don’t show for whichever one happens to be later, so when they have no-shows, they have leftover vaccine at the end of the day that would otherwise go to waste. If it was a shorter drive, I’d drive out there to try my luck. I mean honestly I’m half-considering it even though it’s not a short drive, but Chicago is back on track to move into Phase 1c in a couple weeks so seems kinda silly.

ETA: I think it’s all on the honor system anyway, so I don’t think anyone will even ask why you’re there. My cousin here has asthma, which is not on the 1B+ eligibility list, but he’s trying to get an appointment anyway. I don’t think he’s out of line.

I do feel like this sometimes reading this forum LOL. I kid, I am really happy many of you are getting vaccinated. I hope Canada is not too far behind…

      @ktfran
So sorry for your loss 🙁 Hope you can al celebrate her life in some way considering the circumstances.

I am in BC and they announced they are into opening the vaccinations for older folks (not just those who are critical). According to a news article there were a million people on the lines when they opened (via phone), but barely 100,000 people actually fall under the age group range for the province. SO there are people calling outside the age range and or multiple people calling for one person to secure an appointment.

I am turning 30 this year and will be eligible for my first in August.

I’m so sorry, Ktfran, for your loss. And I am hoping for the best for your niece. I also think you should get the vaccine if you can.

My parents actually ended up getting an appointment last week and got their second shot on Friday! I’m very relieved that they don’t have to worry about it anymore. I’m the only one left in my immediate family who hasn’t been vaccinated (my sister is a pharmacist and got hers in January). I have no idea when I’ll be eligible (not an essential worker and in good health) but hopefully it will be open for the general public by summer…

Most of the analysis I have read has said that vaccination will become available to the general public around mid-april. There will be enough supply for more than half of adults by the end of March and about 4/5 by the end of April.

There are already some significant category expansions happening now. New Jersey is opening up to anyone who is merely “Overweight” (BMI over 25)* rather than obese mid-month, which is half the population. Michigan and WV are opening up to anyone over 50 soon. Stuff is happening.

*If you know anyone in NJ who needs some help getting over the threshold, the Spawn of Fyodor is still selling girl scout cookies.

I am not having a good week. I am increasingly regretting all my dutifully staying at home and throwning both my life and career away. Everything is hopeleesly smashed beyond repair. It just truly is.

I’d have truly been much, much better off simply dying from this fucking virus. It’d have made for a handy exit. True Clarity is rarely a good thing. Avoid it at all costs.

I am flying to NYC next week. (Long story.)

    Come what may.

PS —- Sorry about your loss, ktFran. It’s maddening to me how only all the wrong people keep dying.

Oh… And I love that if you’re fat, smoke and just take overall shitty care of yourself… it’s now been decided that you get the vaccine first.

    WTF?

This is all such a fucking parody. What next? Methheads to the front of the line?

I’m so sorry for your loss and what your niece is going through @KTfran. I do hope you are able to see family and help each other through.

My one remaining grandparent who is a smoker and has COPD, is eighty years old (or 81 I can’t always keep up) refuses to get the vaccine. All because she got sick once when she got the flue vaccine. I suppose it’s her choice. But it makes me sad and a little angry to be honest. We thought we were going to loose her two Christmases ago when her COPD flared up really badly because she initially refused to go on oxygen. So I guess she just has a stubborn streak. I’d like to see her this summer – hopefully I can get vaccinated and go visit.

It confuses me greatly how oh-so- many people are against getting this vaccine. People I know and people I once respected and honestly never thought they could ever be so clueless or foolish. Oh well.

This whole pandemic has made be think America may now regrettably be a lost cause simply because… well, over half the nation is either willfully ignorant or just plain stupid. Maybe both. ?‍♂️

I once thought we were making real progress. But about that I was woefully mistaken.

Update in MA, they’re now introducing a pre-registration system. But the governor says supply is so limited it will still take weeks for people who sign up to get their appt.

Also contributing to the problem is multiple people trying to make appointments for the same elderly person. That really jams up the system. If an older person needs help, ok, but really it should just be one person helping them or it fucks everyone else over.
