I’m back working in the library at the college I work at. At first, it was no masks required which was nice. Everyone has to be vaccinated, plus there were hardly any people here. As of Friday, masks are again required, vaccinated or not (we also have a few programs that started up today which means there are more students on campus). Sigh…I’d rather be working from home where I can breath. School gets really busy here in the beginning and I don’t have an office (just a huge desk in the middle of the floor). I’m not comfortable with a plethora of students just hanging out together.
Idk if I agree with that @fyodor. We knew there was a huge part of the population that didn’t want to get vaccinated. They should have waited until the percentage of vaxed people was higher than it was. They wanted a win and they wanted people to stop complaining about masks. It’s truly not hard to wear them. I was annoyed when they lifted the mask mandate and I was basically right. I’m not a medical professional, but I understand people.
Airlines are even more lax than they were a couple months ago. And this was while delta was on the rise. EDT, a friend was on American Airlines two weeks ago and not even the flight attendant had their mask over their nose… so how could they enforce others to comply?
Is it weird that I don’t mind getting sick, feeling knocked on my butt by the flu or a bad cold?
I mean, it’s pandemic times so I am taking every advised precaution and I know it’s not just about me (and I’m pregnant) so I’m definitely vaxxed, wearing masks, and generally avoiding crowds.
But just saying – before the pandemic, getting sick now and again was something that I just saw as part of life. That part of the bargain of going out and living life is on occassion, you’d get exposed to some bug and it wouldn’t be fun or something I’d want to seek out, per se, but…just not that big a deal.
So, again, I am taking precautions because it’s about more than just me – but when I hear mild COVID is mild from a medical standpoint but perhaps still a highly unpleasant experience, it still makes me go, meh, yeah, sometimes you get that sick.
I used to get a cold sometimes and I definitely did mind it, it sucked. I don’t think I ever had flu. Definitely would not want it.
I don’t think of Covid-19 like cold or flu though. Any sickness I had before, I knew it would pass and I’d be fine. I wouldn’t know that with this, because it does really really weird things to otherwise healthy people, like kill them, or wreck their health like it did to commenter Alafair. Or even just make you feel like you can’t breathe. That’s super scary. I don’t want to just live with this thing going around and mutating. I want everyone to fucking get vaccinated.
ETA a friend told me about his ex’s experience. She (around 40) was hospitalized and intubated. She was told, basically, “ok now you are either going to die or you’ll wake up.” She did live, but has that ever happened to you when you had cold or flu?
Fyodor, I disagree with you about the CDC. Everyone who was following covid data carefully knew what a grave mistake they made in May telling vaccinated ppl to ditch the masks. It was the worst thing they could have said at that point. They hoped it would inspire hesitant folks to get vaccinated and, of course, it backfired.
Leslie, I wish I shared your optimism that schools will be relatively low risk here in nyc but that just is not the case. In summer school, where only 1/5 of our student body is enrolled and only 10% of them are tested every two weeks, thousands – literally thousands – are in quarantine right now bc of in school covid exposure. Over 200 classrooms are closed and two schools, with at least four cases each, are currently under investigation for in-school transmission. (Two schools so far this summer have had proven in-school transmission after days-long investigations).
By CDC standards, NYC is now considered high risk for covid transmission and unvaccinated people are particularly vulnerable, of course. All kids under 12 are unvaxxed and only 1/3 of 12-17 year olds are vaccinated. Cases in nyc are doubling every two weeks and hospitalizations have increased 246% in a month. If this pace continues, when schools open in less than five weeks, we’ll be at January levels of covid transmission and our hospitals will be nearing capacity. NYC public schools have up to 35 kids in a classroom (max of 32 in elementary). Classrooms have poor ventilation – many of the windows don’t even open or they only open a couple inches. My kids’ old school didn’t even have hand soap in the bathrooms and I’m sure that’s true of many public schools in the city. Many of them don’t have adequate outdoor space for eating lunch. Kids will likely eat lunch indoors, unmasked of course. They often eat breakfast together (free breakfast is provided to all nyc public school kids) and snacks for the lower grades.
We may have higher vaccination rates in nyc than other places in the country, but so far, only 60% of DoE staff is vaccinated (my kids’ new charter school is mandating vaccines for the staff so that’s great!). And, I dont know if youve been on public transpiration recently, but it’s like a 70% mask compliance on a good day. NYC kids regularly take public trans to get to and from school every day.
I am *very* worried for the kids on New York this fall.
Also, Israel is one of the most highly-vaccinated countries on the planet and yesterday it was added to the list of countries American are advised not to travel to bc of such high covid transmission. Vaccines are the best layer of protection but they can’t be the only one.
Crap. All good points and things I did not consider. If Cuomo wasn’t up to his eyeballs in the shitpile he made for himself, maybe he’d be focused on schools protecting kids. And I’ve already mentioned DeBlasio’s crapitude.
My nephew successfully had a year of in person school without getting sick but there were some key differences and I totally forgot about public transportation. They were also extremely cautious. The kiddo coughed and was immediately shuffled out of the classroom and sequestered until his parents could pick him up in the middle of the day and then he had three negative tests before he was allowed to return to school.
Sounds like you’re going to have one mofo of a school year. I hope you have xanax or something.
Cuomo’s Department of Health has literally said that it will be providing zero school reopening guidance this year. Districts are on their own and, so far, nyc does not have a reopening plan. We know there will be masks and there will not be a remote option. And that’s it. No other details, like testing, how lunches will be handled, quarantine policies, social distance, or ventilation has been shared. A million+ kids – more than double last year’s in-person enrollment – are expected back in school in just under five weeks and parents don’t know how they’ll be kept safe. It’s a nightmare.
I don’t have a Rx for Xanax but I’ve been working out five days a week for six months and that helps! I also have hope that kid vaccines will be available by Halloween and if we can just make it to then, I know the light at the end of this long tunnel won’t be far off. I really do think 2022 is going to be a much much better year.
Yeah. The CDC has NOT been great on this from day 1… Hell, much of the mask drama is due to them initially telling the world that masks were NOT needed for the general public. ?♂️

I remain very disillisioned at this point.
CDC has dicked around for sure, making up rules, breaking rules, not getting in front of this.
But, as while I am angry that Fauci et al told us that masks were not really needed at the beginning, even knowing otherwise, I have to accept that the rationale was spot on. They knew that people were going to freak and start hoarding masks which is exactly what they did. They did this with sanitizer and toilet paper. People went feral. And the limited PPE (remember, the stockpile was decimated because the former guy and his cronies couldn’t fathom why would we need masks and why would we need to manufacturer them ourselves instead of getting them from China). If you recall, nurses and doctors in NYC and other early hotspots couldn’t get PPE and had to reuse over and over.
Fauci made a decision based on who was going to be at risk, not his ego.
