I can’t wait to see French Dispatch! I need to find some time.. I could take an afternoon off perhaps.. convince radiostar to as well, then have a nice leisurely lunch..
ANyway, @Kate, in Illinois, unlike other states, the cost of testing falls on the employer. Which sucks since it doesn’t motivate those unvaxxed to actually get vaxxed. (except for the hassle).
Additionally, with the labor shortage, there’s no way we could choose the nuclear option of mandating it.
November 8, 2021 at 10:13 am #1099881Yeah, I think test-to-stay is problematic, personally, though I understand it’s a popular option among parents. My concern is that it can take a few days after transmission before an infected person tests positive, so on day 2, day 3, day 4 that a kid is testing negative and allowed in school, they could be infecting other people. Test-to-stay is a great way to avoid quarantine, but also a great way to increase community spread inside a school. This is something parents at my kids’ school are pushing to change the quarantine policy and if my kids weren’t weeks away from being fully vaccinated, I would be much more vocally opposing such a push. I think it’s short-sighted, but enough people follow Emily Oster and her ilk to say the data – cherry-picked, deeply-flawed data – supports test-to-stay. Anyhoo. Not a hill I’m gonna die on, and I am so glad that in a few weeks, my kids will be better protected against all this.
November 8, 2021 at 10:22 am #1099882Also, not for nothing but transmission rates in Europe are exploding. Germany is experiencing its highest level of rates since the pandemic began and a few other countries are right behind them. Hospitalizations are significantly increasing too. Any time I hear about what they’re doing in schools in Europe as a model for what we should be doing here, I’m dubious. It’s not going well there at all.
I am so happy for all those who can get their kids vaccinated!!
We went to our first normal ish wedding since this all began. It was really good just socializing. I will say at the reception we were pretty much non masked. I did when I got a drink at the bar but otherwise with all the eating and drinking we didn’t really wear masks. Vaccines are mandated here for receptions.
For some reason the numbers are ticking up in Ontario. It is frustrating because there’s nothing else we can do other than get vaccinated. I don’t see how we can restrict capacity much anymore. Hopefully once our government approves vaccines for kids we will be better again before Christmas.
AngeNovember 8, 2021 at 4:12 pm #1099899Here in Aus we have hit 80% fully vaxxed for the population 16 and over, expectations are we’ll be at 90 by December (which is when the boosters will start being available to general population as well I think). It’s a nice feeling, though it’d be good to start getting more kids done as they’re back at school. It should have happened sooner but I’m proud that our anti vax lunacy is minimal and most people have done their part.
November 8, 2021 at 5:04 pm #1099902@Kate – I missed the voting deadline but looked at the pic of your pup anyway and I just wanted to say that was an awesome Halloween costume!! Your pup was just so adorable 🙂
Cases here in Southern Colorado are also going up. I had a MRI (maintenance thing for my chronic condition) scheduled initially for October and then they called and rescheduled for December. Because of COVID and lack of staff. The sad thing is, I wouldn’t even know about the high number of cases if I didn’t work where I work because I don’t think anything COVID related has been in the local news in weeks. So everyone is just assuming all is hunky dory. Hardly any mask wearing in stores…but hospitals are full (or nearly so). I get my booster Thursday and I’m so glad!
Miss MJNovember 9, 2021 at 9:43 am #1099916New Orleans just released the results of a study they did on Covid transmission during a Halloween-themed parade two weeks ago. No evidence of increased transmission. It was obviously outside, so that helped, but lots of people screaming and crowded together and — nothing.
The city is crediting the mayor’s proof of vaccination status or negative Covid test requirement for restaurants, bars, alleys venues, music venues, theaters, etc., which eliminates a lot of the risk of indoor spread and also encouraged adults to get vaccinated cause it’s a bummer to get turned away from your dinner reservation because your dining companion couldn’t be bothered to get vaccinated (and you will get turned away!). Also, until last week mandatory masking inside everywhere and still in schools and medical settings. Curious to see if this trend holds going into the colder months. Cautiously optimistic.
LisforLeslieNovember 9, 2021 at 10:46 am #1099918It will be interesting to see how all of this spins around. You know when the Florida and Texas numbers were going up – it was summer. Too hot to be outside, so more inside time for everyone. No one seemed to recognize that. Now that it’s colder in the north, the numbers will likely go up and in the south, they may dip a bit because mid-day golf is pleasant again and dinner outside does not yet require those portable patio heaters.
Someone smarter than me noted that mandates have reduced the number of teachers that don’t want to protect kids, nurses and doctors that don’t believe in science and cops and military personnel who refuse to comply with the law. So that’s cool.
November 10, 2021 at 6:22 am #1099927There’s an outbreak at my kids’ school. Eight cases in four days (including two vaccinated teachers). Thirteen of eighteen classes are in quarantine. The DOH did not advise closing the school. Joanie’s been quarantined all week and we’re keeping Jackson home for the rest of the week even though his class isn’t quarantined. They’re not testing the kids whose classes haven’t been affected, which I think is idiotic. We’ve made it too far and are too close to full vaccination now for the kids to get covid at school at this point.
The city closed a school in queens that has 22 cases and evidence of widespread transmission. They have more than double the students we do, so maybe our school will be closed if there are a couple more positive cases today or tomorrow…
