I took a position with a New York based firm during the pandemic (taken with the understanding that I wouldn’t be local) so I’m going to be full time remote for the foreseeable future.

I’ve kind of thrown around the idea of moving some warm cheaper suburb, maybe somewhere in the southeast. The value proposition for living in the city has kind of gone down since (A) with the pandemic I’m not doing the kinds of city things I’ve done (B) Both me and BoF* are remote so we don’t need to proximate to a city.

That’s the thing too, it’s such a tight market for hiring, that companies really have to offer new hires remote positions, and then it’s like, how do you turn around and say your loyal employees have to work in the office but the new people can be remote?

Well, it’s partially that there’s a demand to work remote but partially that you have a much bigger geographical reach if you’re hiring remote so you have a greater ability to find good candidates.

In my case, the firm got rid of most of their office space during the pandemic so they’re not equipped to be back in person anyway (they don’t seem especially strongly motivated either). I honestly don’t know how it will play out but I could see a lot of smaller and midsized firms organizing themselves around remote work. For larger firms that need to train incoming classes of new associates it’s going to be harder.

We’ve been back in the office since July 2020 but I think we are more the exception here.

Went to the mall yesterday. Same mall I was almost exactly 2 years ago when I wanted to go to Uniqlo for heat tech clothes for my trip to the Northwest Territories for the end of March 2020 that I didn’t end up going to lol. Mall wasn’t too busy.

Trying to find dresses for pre wedding events but the spring dresses aren’t out yet. It’s hard to buy dresses online especially because my size has changed.

Tomorrow the vaccine passports are ending and there are no more indoor capacity restrictions in Ontario. Rumour is that mask mandates will drop later this month.

Zero consequences for my sister’s coworker that I’m aware of. This happened before there were any requirements to be vaccinated at her company. Sounds like he just kinda told people unprompted that he was vaccinated then months later put his foot in his mouth so everyone found out he’d lied. She says he’s vaccinated now, but who knows.

ETA: Those M.Gemi shoes look like what I was trying to find for work right before COVID started. A coworker who always looks put together wore a similar style to that when she wasn’t wearing heels, so I thought I’d try to find my own. I didn’t find anything quite right pre-COVID, so maybe when I go back I’ll give those a shot.

@hfantods, last Friday, I ordered a super fun, sequined mini-dress from Sezane for my friend’s delayed 40th (now 42) in June. Her party is basically like a wedding reception because she’s never been married and she wanted to have a celebration. Colors of the sequins are blues/greens/oranges and is part of their spring collection. I really, really hope it fits.

    That is so fun @ktfran!

Oh yeah before the pandemic I was on the hunt for loafers and pointy toe flats. I did buy not pointy toe flats but not quite ballet flats, but haven’t worn them yet.

Oh, also, hfantods… check out Reformation for dresses. They’re a little pricey, but they’re sustainable and have fair labor practices, etc. I don’t mind paying a little more if I know the reason why it cost more. They have such pretty fabrics, colors and patterns.

They ship internationally. I didn’t check for Canada specifically. Oh, I think they have some dresses at Nordstrom’s too.

i’ve been back since Aug 2021. But I work for a college so most of the time, the work can’t be remote. I can, on occasion, work from home. But I also serve as a semi-receptionist position so I’m usually here. And with that, I wear a mask all day. I actually cut my hours – I arrive a little later (the mornings are dead as most everyone is in class) and leave an hour earlier than I used to (checking work email while home until I’m officially off the clock). Part of that is because of wearing a mask all day with no breaks (except lunch). And the other part is for my dogs…they are elderly and got used to me being home during the pandemic. So trying to get them to go back to holding it for 8+ hours a day seemed really mean. And my bosses are fine with it…or at least haven’t told me differently!

@Fyodor – that’s pretty much what I did. I packed up and moved south. My salary doesn’t change (which is cool) and now I’m in a state with no income tax (super cool) and the COL is lower. Although I did have to buy a car.

My boss blew off going to the office this week because her schedule was too crazy, so no one went in. And she’s out this week at a course that’s actually in person. I do want to go in, not so much if I’m the only one, but I’ll do it. Everyone but us two either has kids or a really awkward commute or both.

Separately, I got these rain Uggs, lol. They really are the perfect shoe for messy spring weather, walking the dog, going to the store.

And quite light and comfortable. They are the same style as the Tasman slipper, but rubber. I got olive green but if my mom likes them I think I will give her mine and get hot pink.

Me and my kids have covid again. My daughter was coughing so I whipped out my free government covid test and she tested positive. My son also tested positive. When I had covid the first time in March 2020 I thought I was dying, couldn’t breathe and had horrible chest pain. Triple vaxxed and I just have a bad headache now. Kids are coughing but mostly unbothered. Cabin fever is going to be the worst part. Vaccines ftw
