So does anybody else believe the good people at Roche are going to rake in money with this pandemic? It seems that all the tests manufactured by Roche are the most reliable and that in turn means more demand for their tests and equipment?
I really wish I had paid better attention during my science classes.
LisforLeslieMay 8, 2020 at 2:49 pm #885618(this is LisforLeslie) 20 years in pharmaceuticals, I can tell you that nothing has stopped for us. No one is happy about this situation, believe me, pharma was not prepared for a new disease of this contagion and transmission. Treating viruses is HARD. Everyone is trying to figure out how to help and how to get what is needed to the people that need it. We’re just about to go into flu season and there is so much to do for that; companies need people. Not just scientists either.
Yes, they will make money. Much of that will go back to research. Several million will go CEOs and sales organizations. Most of it will go back to the labs and the manufacturing.
Manufacturing in pharma is not easy. You can’t just pivot and start making different stuff or a variation of a product and put it on the market.
I will also say that at no point am I going to be the first to get the new RNA resequencing vaccine. Fuck no – maybe in 10 years, but I will not be first in line for that.
May 8, 2020 at 2:55 pm #885619@LforLeslie is there a vacine type you would feel more comfortable with if it comes out?
LisforLeslieMay 8, 2020 at 3:30 pm #885622@Helen – be present for yourself too. Take care of yourself.
@MaterialsGirl – I fully believe in Vaccines; I will absolutely get a live-virus shot the same as the flu, measles, rubella, HPV, etc. I trust my body to understand the basic biology of “Virus Bad. Make Antibodies now!” I want to see the long – like 10-15 years long – term affects of the RNA resequencing that companies like Moderna are promising. It sounds great on paper – but they’ve never delivered it successfully. And the animals that get the first tests -well they don’t necessarily live long enough to know if they grow bat wings or deliver little rat babies with bat wings.I’m not confident that an untested science delivered under significant time constraints to a government that will be pressed to push it through regardless of the data is a good bet. It may work fantastic. It may prevent you from getting COVID and that’s awesome. But there won’t be enough information in the next 5 years to make me comfortable with it.
May 8, 2020 at 3:42 pm #885623got it. Is that the type that is looking to be fastest to the market at this point? i watched the polio doc about the development there and how tragically long both live and dead took
May 8, 2020 at 4:55 pm #885629Been lurking through this thread because I have been very fortunate not to have anything happen to me. Unfortunately that came to a halt today after a call with my dad. I live in the west coast (PNW) in Canada and my folks and family are in Ontario. My parents are empty nesters, and both have their own businesses. My mom does garden maintenance and she has managed to stay working with a variety of procedures in place to protect her workers.
However my dad called me to consult as it seems despite my moms good work on her business, she is not following social distancing procedures outside work and home. She has apparently been too friendly and close in contact with her clients on site, as well at grocery stores and in other public spaces. My dad has had to remind her and pull her aside to get her to maintain social distancing.
My younger brother works for her while his other job is on hold, he is immuno compromised due to having Crohns. He understands the risk with working in the job with my mom, but also sees how she isn’t entirely keeping safe and is frustrated.
It is hard hearing this as my dad has been extra vigilant at home and when they go out for essentials, but my mom just seems to be ignorant elsewhere. She even went into a friends home the other day when she was supposed to drop off some distilled sanitizer. THEY invited her in, and she accepted. So two groups to blame here. But just shocked she is doing this and not comprehending the risks. My dad has planned to talk to her again and re instate the importance of safety, otherwise he is gonna make her stay in the basement till she complies.
HelenMay 8, 2020 at 9:32 pm #885636wow you miss a lot being cut off for an entire week. Just now learned my home state is once again in the news for the worst reason even. I’m not even fucking surprised. I see this shit every day. And every day I hear a white person claim that there wouldn’t be any racism if they just stopped making a big deal about it. Depression level unemployment. And murder hornets?? WTF
