I’m in the SF Bay Area, and the shelter in place for the entire metro area starts in 5 minutes. My office hadn’t had any sort of work from home policy until Friday, and I went in today to get some stuff since I’ll be WFH for awhile. When I heard the announcement on the news I went out at lunch to the grocery store. It wasn’t terrible, but there was no milk, instant foods (like rice a roni) or paper products. Luckily grocery stores (and farmer’s markets!), pharmacies, takeout restaurants, and gas stations will be open but little else. I’m not worried about myself, I’m more worried about people in the service industry and my parents (my mother does not seem to take this seriously!) My sister is a pharmacist and she called me today. She still has to work and she has a lot of elderly customers, and she’s filling their prescriptions as fast as she can for them. There are 138 cases in Santa Clara County right now, 40 in SF, and 2 people just died. I’m dismayed how many people are saying this is all some political stunt!
Helen, I’m wishing you and your family well for a quick recovery!

I think — since we need to do this. They should shut everything down. Just everything. Give people a day or two to get ready — stock up — then shut it down. Everything. Lockdown.

I wasn’t asking what I should do, I was asking what’s open in Philly.

I think there will be mandatory lockdowns soon. In my suburban PA town people are still congregating in droves at local parks and playgrounds, despite having barricades, signs and caution tape. A police officer went to a particularly popular one and told them all to go home, explained why the playgrounds and parks are closed. As soon as he got everyone out of the area he left, and they all went back to the playground.

    People are crazy.

“Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said that he was calling on nonessential businesses to close down across the state. While Wolf specified that the state will not be enforcing his shutdown recommendations, city officials said they may use emergency authority to close or penalize businesses that fail to comply with the municipal shutdown order.”

@Ange I know your frustrated right now, but it isn’t just Boomers who are acting like rebellious teenagers. People of all ages, from all walks of life are chafing at the restrictions. I’ve had MULTIPLE conversations with college students about the inadvisability of traveling from mountain towns to Arizona for spring break, St. Patricks Day parties and, oh yeah, coming back to campus after traveling to hot spots because “it’s more fun here and they want to see their friends”. We’re all stressed, many are frightened – my job and housing are in actual jeopardy – maybe now is a good time to focus on pulling people together rather than exacerbating perceived generational divides.

I’m supposed to go back to New Orleans for work next week. Just got an announcement that there was a confirmed case in our office building (which, duh, NOLA is a hotspot right now and there’s not only one case – just one confirmed).

My husband and I have been working out of FL the last couple of weeks, waiting to see what was going to happen with all of this. Mostly, we can work from home, no problem. However, we have in-person stuff lined up next week in NOLA that we can’t continue due to pending deadlines. I have asthma and I honestly don’t know what to do. Send him alone? He has high blood pressure. (But he isn’t on one of the medicines that they think makes people with HBP more vulnerable.)

I’m so frustrated. State courts have closed down and continued deadlines and cases. In NOLA, all bars, coffee shops, malls, etc are shut down and restaurants are take out or delivery only. I’m sure an “all non-essential businesses” order is coming soon. But the federal courts – aside from converting some things to by telephone – haven’t shut down. And all deadlines remain pending, which means all lawyers have to keep doing what needs to be done for their cases, even if it has to be done in person. Or involves travel. It’s absolutely nuts. Just shut everything down already. Or shut nothing down. (Obviously not an option). But the half-in/half-out approach is accomplishing very little.

And in addition to the work angle, and my father, who is also in New Orleans, woke up yesterday with aches and pains and today had a cough and fever. Out of abundance of caution, he went to a clinic where they’re testing for COVID-19. Told him it ”sounds like the flu” – without testing for it! – and to ”come back if he gets worse.” Like unable to breathe worse. He’s in his 70s. There are currently two stories about men in the NOLA area who had symptoms, got told “it’s the flu” without a flu test and are now hospitalized with COVID-19. One is a previously healthy 45 year old now on a ventilator. The other was older, like 60s or 70s and obviously within the danger age bracket. But, apparently, you can only get a test if you’re well-connected, famous or half way to dead.

OMG, that’s all so scary, Miss Mj!! Keep us posted on your doctor. Keeping fingers crossed he really does have “just the flu” and bounces back asap.

I have high blood pressure that I take medication for (I also have a couple autoimmune disorders that I take meds for). I hadn’t heard that certain meds put one at a higher risk. I will google that now, but if you don’t mind sharing what specific meds are problematic, if you know, that would be helpful! I have felt short of breath for days – like winded when I walk up the stairs, which is not the norm for me. I thought it was stress (I don’t have any other covid symptoms), but now I’m wondering if it’s more… (I take my temperature a couple times a day and have not have a fever at all).

I hope your dad is ok Ms MJ!
Swear to God if someone posts about a nonessential outing I’m going to show up and lick their face. People are delighted that the bowling alley is empty & their commute is shorter. For a reason idiots. They don’t know how widespread this is because they keep reading about 3,100 cases in all of America. Its so much higher because nobody’s getting tested!! My family isn’t included in that number. My neighbor demanded to know where we’ve been for the last 2 weeks to see if we exposed her. Lady if you’ve been out of your house in the last week you’ve been exposed. We aren’t the only people with this virus
