So, I think in situations where transportation may be a problem, a shuttle option for guests is nice. It’s also a safe ride for anyone who may be tempted to drink and drive. A couple years ago, we went to a wedding in the suburbs and the group of friends we were with (8 of us in total) wanted to get back to city, where we all lived, to go to a bar together. We needed two cars, which took probably 45 minutes to get to us, then it was another 30+ minutes back into the city. It was fine, but not great. So if it’s in the budget, I do think it’s a nice thing to offer people. If it’s not in the budget, people will be fine.
Years ago at a wedding I went to in the Napa area, where shuttles seem to be very common for weddings guests, two guests hopped on the shuttle for the other bride staying at the same hotel, whose names happened to be nearly identical. They eventually realized they were at the wrong wedding, got into a cab or Lyft to get to the correct venue, but mistakenly ended up at the vineyard’s tasting room, which was separate/in a different location from the estate where the wedding was being held. They ended up bailing on the wedding because finding cabs in the area was not super fast and getting wine drunk instead. Everyone thought it was hilarious.
I saw some guy with long hair do that on TikTok with his Revlon brush and tried it, but it didn’t really work for me. I don’t think I was doing it right.
On day two of my small barrel curls with the Dyson, I threw it up into a ponytail and went for a jog. There was still curl in them afterward, which was a pleasant surprise. I have a hard time salvaging my hair after workouts.
I’ve never heard of Fashion Pass but will look into it! I didn’t realize you can’t pick when you’d like to receive things from Haverdash. I believe RTR also has a clothing rental service that allows you to pick when you’d like to receive which item, but have never looked into the specifics of how it works or what it costs.
I finally used the smaller barrel to curl my hair this morning because I have a Saturday morning meeting (how fun). Initially was horrified by the tight ringlets but I raked through it with my hands and it’s fallen a bit, so now it looks nice, soft, and bouncy. I prefer for it to fall a bit more. I’ve finally figured out how to section off my hair for easiest/best results and now can tell when the section of hair I’ve grabbed is too big. I can sip my coffee while I curl, which is also nice, haha.
I have also ditched the mask for outdoor activities where it makes sense to do so. I still keep one on hand in case I turn onto a more crowded street or something. I actually really liked that my mask kept my face warm in the winter, but happy to go mask-free in more outdoor situations as it warms up.
Yeah, I truly don’t understand the argument that this will incentivize the unvaccinated. I mean in theory, yes, I get it since the new guidelines are for vaccinated Americans, but in actual execution, I don’t since we have no way to know who is and isn’t vaccinated. I’m sure there will be unvaccinated folks with zero desire to get vaccinated who will happily ditch their masks.
My boyfriend and I did see someone last weekend at the store without a mask. It was weird, people around here have been pretty good in my opinion. The guy she was with (presumably her partner) was masked up. I was giving her death stares at the checkout line. I assume businesses here will continue to require masks.
I was also surprised by the decision/announcement. I can see myself still choosing to mask up in at least some situations where it’s optional.
My mom is in town visiting. She lives in a different state that’s currently a hotspot and we went walking through my area yesterday. She was surprised how many people in my neighborhood wear masks just walking down the street or whatever. I guess it’s very different where she lives.
Oh no! That’s… honestly pretty bad considering the price tag. (I was mad when my first Revlon brush crapped out after like a year and the price was much lower.) Hopefully not the norm because I’m leaning toward keeping mine. When I ordered mine, the website said they were out of stock but that they were taking orders for their next restock several weeks out, but then literally the next day I got a shipping notification email and the day after that, it was at my door. So, maybe you’ll get lucky and get the fuschia one even though they say it’s out of stock.
So we went on a trip a few weeks ago and when we came back to Chicago, there wasn’t a single Lyft or Uber to be found. We both had our phones out trying our luck with different apps, and nothing. There were plenty of cabs, so it was fine, but it was odd. The boyfriend used to travel for work so frequently that he had some perfectly-timed Lyft-ordering routine down, but it was a no-go this time. My sister had to travel for work recently and called me in a panic that she couldn’t find a ride share and asked me to drive her because she was starting to worry she’d miss her flight if she didn’t get moving.
She’s at HKS now. I had to Google it, haha. (Not to sound creepy, but she used to work for the company that I’m preetttty sure you work for, @ktfran, but in DC and NYC.)
I got a bike and a Divvy membership last year thinking that if we went back to the office when I still felt unsafe, I’d become a bike commuter. I’ve been on public transit a handful of times in the past year and it actually felt okay because it was always super empty when I used it. I have no idea what rush hour on the el looks like right now, though. I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before in this thread, but I have no real qualms being physically at work. I am in our regional office, so there are only, like, a dozen of us taking up an entire floor of a high rise and most of us have our own offices anyway. It’s just getting to/from work that has given me pause this entire time.
ETA: Not sure if this is true for everyone at my sister’s company, or if this is just part of a recent promotion she got, but they will cover some amount (maybe all?) of parking to make it easier on employees. Her office is about a block from mine so she’s already offering me rides when I go back. I have been to her office and it’s an open concept and everyone sits kinda close so… IDK how that’ll work. But the parking situation won’t be as bad as I assume it normally is downtown Chicago.
Good to have you vaccine appointment booked, though! I was so excited for mine.
Out of curiosity, has anyone’s office announced a date to go back to the office? My sister lives/works in the same major U.S. city I’m in (the city want to fully reopen in July) and works for a global company (an architecture/engineering firm). They announced the reopening of their offices for a date in August and will be doing some kind of hybrid WFH/in-office model. My company hasn’t made any announcements yet, but we do have a town hall-style meeting next week and I wonder if a similar announcement for us is forthcoming. I know they’ve been working on some kind of WFH policy but don’t know the details yet. I do want to go back eventually and want to feel safe in doing so (the commute is, for me, the biggest unknown for safety since I take public transit), but also hope to have some flexibility when I do.
@ktfran We live a very short walk from Dinkel’s now and my boyfriend goes alllll the time. He’s obsessed. I like them, too, but I can’t eat the way he does.
@hfantods It’s a-okay to get cake if you want cake! I didn’t realize how many feelings people had about wedding cakes until probably the last couple years. I thought I was alone in not really caring for it but then learned I’m not. I’ve seen some very cute cake toppers. I happen to like when people acknowledge their pets through cake toppers, haha.I generally like cake, but something about fancy cakes… I’d rather eat cake from a box. I’ve been to exactly one wedding where I actually liked the cake. I don’t know how much the average wedding cake costs but have noticed couples steering away from them. One wedding I went to a couple years ago had an ice cream sundae bar that had melted all over the place by the time they announced to guests it was open, which they did right before the first dance so basically nobody watched the first dance because they were waiting in line for melted ice cream. Whoops.
