I haven’t had my hair cut since mid-November! In February I decided I’d wait until after my vacation to see my stylist since Hawaii is so humid and I knew I’d just be rocking braids the whole time, but things pretty quickly got weird after I came home and it didn’t happen. I don’t color my hair, so that helps. I trimmed my face frame by myself recently and think it looks fine but I’m sure my stylist will disagree. I got an email today about their reopening protocol and it seems pretty thorough.
My mom has short hair and has most of my life. It’s the longest I can ever remember seeing it and it’s looking pretty mullet-ish right now.
My friend’s salon is doing a contest on Instagram with giveaways for the customers who have the worst roots, which I think is hilarious.
Oh and we also discovered that there’s mint growing in my boyfriend’s backyard. Nobody knows who originally planted it, but I’ve been wanting to grow my own herbs back there and was pretty excited to discover we already have a ton of mint. We’ve been making cocktails from a book I own, How to Cocktail, and I’ve been really liking this one cocktail with gin, lemon, mint, and simple syrup.
I’m so glad my boyfriend has a backyard. It’s small, but it’s been a nice way to get outside. I bought some lounge chairs on Amazon in March but it hasn’t been nice enough to use them yet. On a recent Zoom call, a friend in another big city was saying she was glad to have a balcony then remarked that “everyone has a balcony” and I was like… eh? In her city, maybe, I dunno. Here, though? No, I don’t feel that way at all and consider those of us with yards or rooftops or whatever kind of private or semi-private outdoor access very lucky.
We just had a staff meeting. There will be no raises this summer or holiday bonuses in December. Not surprising. We’re not at the point of cutting pay or laying people off (…yet?) so I’ll take it. I graduated into the last recession waist deep in student loan debt and that period of my life was so tough. I think about it regularly and have for years, always felt like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. And here we are!
@Miel Congratulations! I’m glad you had a great wedding day!
I’m not in a foul mood this week like I was last week, thank goodness. Looks like IL is also on track to enter Phase 3 at the beginning of June, which surprised me. But I may have misunderstood what we need to achieve for our next phase. But, it means hair cuts and small groups, among other things. I’d already purchased two gift cards to my salon and today booked a hair appointment for mid-June (my salon already has limited June availability). I’m not sure I’ll feel comfortable in a group of 10 immediately, TBH.
My parents are in a different state that’s further along so my sister brought up the idea of us visiting them in June, but my dad is still uncomfortable. I was on the fence about it and his reservations about the idea confirmed that it’s still too soon.
@Miel Congratulations! I’m sorry you can’t have the wedding day you wanted. It’s okay to be disappointed (I would be, too!), but I’m sure it will still be joyous and special. I also hope when all of this ends you can have the celebration you want.
I’ve always thought that I’d be a-okay doing the courthouse ceremony thing… but I’d still want a great dress. From that perspective, I’ve happy you got your dress in time, too!
One of my cousins is supposed to get married in July. They haven’t canceled it yet, but I think that announcement is coming soon. Their Plan B is a courthouse ceremony on their original date with a vow renewal and reception down in 2021.
I have no clue. I know nothing about computers. I don’t even have a personal laptop at this point. I assumed I was on a Mac because of the software I need to use, but… eh, IDK. (I will also add, I like our IT guys and trust they know fa-haaar more than I do about IT. But we seem to have a lot of IT issues. A LOT. Like maybe last fall or summer, I can no longer remember, everything was down for maybe 2-3 days. Server, email, phones. IT said it was a Comcast outage issue. Another coworker called Comcast and apparently there was no outage. So.) And yes, it took me like six weeks of working from home to realize how much slower things are when working off of VPN. So now I disconnect when I can.
I actually think it’s because I’m working in an older version of InDesign, which I pointed out in an email I sent yesterday about my ongoing issues. (Can’t even tell if that email has been acknowledged yet by anyone in a position to help because our email is still down.) Our art director, who also uses InDesign, though for different functions, actually reached out to me yesterday just to give me her cell phone number in case I need to vent. She doesn’t have the same forced quit issues, but said she’s had days where she feels like she’s losing her mind because things are running so slow that very basic tasks are taking like 10-15 minutes — which IT told her is an issue caused by heavy internet traffic rather than a software flaw. Most days are okay, but some days are just… yikes.
Thanks for the fixes @Fyodor. When our server ever comes back up I’ll definitely check those out. At work I have two large screens and one often has an InDesign window open as big as I can get it and it’s awesome. The temporary solutions, workarounds, and inconveniences were fine at first but the longer we are remote the more infuriated I am on days that I’m having issues. I was such a miserable person to be around yesterday.
Wow! Thanks, @Fyodor! I really appreciate it. I think I’ll pull the trigger on the first one today. I think my boyfriend even has a spare monitor in his office, so with any luck I’ll be up and running with a better setup by next week.
@LadyE I work a bit in InDesign and it’s kinda brutal on my laptop. My laptop screen is, IDK, 13 inches? So my InDesign window can’t open to its full size on my laptop. So I’m constantly dragging the window around to be able to scroll far enough to the right or left and see different areas of the file. And on top of that, my InDesign is really buggy. Quits unexpectedly when I do certain things in there and my IT department has no idea why because “it’s been years since they’ve used InDesign.” Which, okay, but that doesn’t help me. And then there are the days where my internet is just kinda slow and opening the files takes forever.
In other frustrating work news, our server and email is currently down. Awesome. I suspect I’ll have to put in some hours this weekend to make up for lost time this week.
@Fydoor I believe I have two Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you enjoy this kind of stuff, I’m definitely all ears! Thanks!
@Cleo I think I have a Forerunner 35 from maybe… 2015 or 2016? I don’t even think they make this model of Forerunner anymore. It’s been a great running watch for a newer, not-super-serious runner. I love all the data, I love that it still works. I wasn’t even looking for a new one but went onto the Garmin website to see if they had different strap colors for mine… aaand now I want the vivomove style for day-to-day, when I’m not running (since I don’t think it’s designed for that). I had no idea they were making hybrid watches these days! It’s on sale but still pricey.
