It’s crazy how small of a hole they can come through. The size of a pencil they say. We used that expandable foam to fill the hole once we found it. The negative is that they could just die in the wall. This happened to my mom. When she brought someone out to handle it they said she could have her drywall torn up until they found it or wait a week until the body decomposes and the smell leaves. It smelled so bad for over a week. I mean SO BAD but it was that or end up having half the dang house re drywalled. Ugh. Luckily for us once we plugged the hole they just left and no dead bodies in the walls, but it is a risk…although a risk either way once they are in there. So not fun. Sorry you are dealing with that.

TheHizzyMarch 11, 2019 at 9:11 am #836426I will say, 90% of ours is kitchen items. Which our current kitchen set (pots/pants/spatulas) are from my college days and all pieced together.
While I am in my 30s when FMH moved over he left all his furniture/kitchen/housewares for his kids to have a head start. So the shower really is helping us build together instead of him just moving into what I already had.
March 11, 2019 at 9:24 am #836428I am finding more of the people I attend weddings for ask for money to use towards their honeymoon. I agree, many people are getting married later in life and or have established a living situation and don’t really need the ‘first home’ tools and knick knacks. The wedding in June has asked specifically for no gifts, rather contributions to their honeymoon trip.
I picked my Boyfriend up from the airport late last night. He was flying in from Colombia and his flight got delayed in Denver, one of his layovers, due to two passengers on the plane that boarded. He was asked to go through customs though twice apparently, once when he landed, and then again when he went to get his connecting flight (to Canada). It was a bit ridiculous, but because of the passenger issues he managed to make his flight, otherwise he would have missed it.
Was a long wait for him (10 day trip), and then a late night picking him up. Glad to have him back though! He bought me some chocolate from the plantation they visited, was actually very tasty, no one else liked it apparently. And a ceramics set for tea/drinks in my favorite color (green).
I have also never been to a bridal shower, though I have been invited to several. (I’ve turned them down because of travel/logistics.) A friend of a friend had a bridal shower AND a wedding shower, and I’m like… aren’t they basically the same thing?
A friend of mine getting married in June, her wedding is a destination wedding. I probably could have gone to her bridal shower, but I didn’t want to pay to extend my rental car reservation for three days at holiday rates to go to an event that would require me to spend money on a gift for a couple that’s in their 30s when I have to travel to the wedding where I’d bring another gift. It felt like too much. My mom went and said people were acting kinda bonkers. Like I guess the groom showed up at the end just to open presents and thank everyone (didn’t know this was a thing?) and she asked him to take a photo of all the women together, and other people freaked out because HE’S THE GROOM, YOU CAN’T ASK HIM TO TAKE A PHOTO BECAUSE HE’S THERE TO BE HONORED. Not sad I missed it.
In any case, I wouldn’t have a shower. If/when I get married, we’d have two sets of perfectly good stuff. I want some nice new knives but plan to buy them for myself sometime this year. (On which note, if anyone has any recommendations, I’m all ears!)
I love my Wustof knives. I never buy the sets because you end up with knives you don’t use. I buy the sleeves to keep them in, they have them on Amazon. I have five good knives and need no more, and truly mostly use my chefs knife. I also found on Amazon a set with holding case of their steak knives which I like, needed and it was like $40. I find some at Home Goods. They aren’t always there but often appear. That can save a lot. I’d rather have a few good knives than set I use one or two of. I also don’t like blocks because most people put them blade down and that dulls the knife as it is cutting into the wood. Plus someone once told me as like a safety thing not to leave a weapon right there on the counter should a burglar come in or something. That’s probably a bit paranoid but made some sense.
VathenaMarch 11, 2019 at 9:51 am #836432We didn’t have a shower either. I didn’t even want to register for wedding gifts, but I’m sure no one here would be surprised to hear that all of the relatives age 50+ were aghast that we didn’t want a registry. “Where are you registered?! You MUST have a registry!!” *clutches pearls* So we did, but also suggested donations to the animal shelter where we adopted our cat. And we put the info on a wedding website, which similarly confounded the older relatives. My grandmother was all sniffy about not having registry information included in the invitation! And also about the “semi-formal dress” suggestion. She didn’t know what that meant. This from a self-proclaimed etiquette expert…but I digress. Almost uniformly, the under-40 crowd gave donations to the animal shelter, and the olds got us new spatulas. It’s curious how some generations are so invested in wedding-gifting as to be insulted when not asked to give anything.
@JD I really want a new chef’s knife. I’d be happy with just that one because I also don’t need a whole set. My mom has a chef’s knife that she got for like $20 at a grocery store in Japan when we lived there (15+ years ago!) that I LOVE. It looks a lot like this Wusthof: https://www.amazon.com/Wusthof-Classic-Super-Glider-8-Inch/dp/B007E2700K/ref=asc_df_B007E2700K/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241890343659&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8650389049374448419&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9060252&hvtargid=pla-636063639752&psc=1. I want to do research before I buy anything, but the functional equivalent of the one she has is what I’m looking for.
LisforLeslieMarch 11, 2019 at 10:09 am #836437@JD – we’ve put the foam and steel wool everywhere.
I hate mice. And I really hate them when I’m naked.I was surprised by a gecko (also while getting ready for a shower and totally naked). That little dude was hanging on the inside of a medicine cabinet. He hid in the corner and I just kept an eye out. The next day he was still there and I wrapped him in a tissue and brought him outside.
Mr. Mouse was not treated as kindly.
Perfect knife. I first had the 8” and used it so much I also got the 9”. I wanted two since I used it so much and so I didn’t have to clean between some foods i didn’t want cross contaminating. Plus helps to have two when we are both in the kitchen. I also have bread knife, chefs knives and pairing but happen to have two pairing as well as my mom found one at Home good for me. That’s really all you need.
