I did a makeup purge a couple months into the pandemic. And then I ordered a couple of clean products that I use most, which is cheek stain and mascara.

    The makeup purge felt great.

I need to streamline my closet sometime too.

I used foundation when my skin wasn’t great. Since I didn’t remove it all with make up remover, my skin got worse. I think it’s all personal preference! After Accutane I switched to CC cream since I felt a lot better about my skin.

I miss lipstick! I put some on for NYE. For mask life, I use concealer and apply blush a bit higher on the cheek bone so it’ll show above the mask, heh. I also do a couple swipes of Gimme Brow.

I did a clothes purge a couple months into the pandemic to get rid of stuff I didn’t like or didn’t fit because of my gradual weight loss over two years. Within 10 months I’ve put on the COVID-19 unfortunately (and I’m kind of a menta mess about that) but I don’t think those were clothes I liked.

I think makeup in our moms’ day probably did clog your pores, but new formulations don’t.

I think I’d be super washed out without: A brow gel, mascara, concealer, blush, and a little bronzer. Then a BB cream polishes everything up. But yeah, it’s totally “you do you.” I see a wide range at work. I think a little makeup is the way to go, but if you look good with none, that’s totally ok too in a professional setting.

So up until this year I did a full face every day for work: eye primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, brow gel, powder, blush, highlighter, lipgloss. Every day. I have blond eyelashes (redhead) and am very fair so I do look washed out if I don’t wear it. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do just mascara and eyeliner without it transferring onto my eyelids/my eyelids getting oily and gross throughout the day. I’ve tried it several times and basically it doesn’t work. So if I’m wearing mascara, I have to do the full eye look. In this pandemic, I’ve lost the energy for it.

So now, my “minimal” look is eyebrow gel, powder, blush, highlighter, lip balm. I don’t love it because I wish my eyes would cooperate (maybe I’m an oily betch too, seems like!), but they won’t and I get annoyed with it.

That being said, I love makeup and have a ton of eyeshadow palettes and do not go to any social function without a full face. Then again, the amount of social functions I’ve been to this past year has been very small, lol. I do put some makeup on when my boyfriend comes over and wore a full face for his birthday, but IDK. It seems like a lot of work when I’m just sitting in front of the computer all day.

I remember once I was helping to interview someone for a trainer role at my (previous) tech company and she came in with zero makeup and her hair looked like she’d just rolled out of bed. Her clothes were fine but I was silently judging. Like, you can’t even run a comb through your hair for an interview? Maybe put on some lipgloss? It was for a technical trainer and she had an engineering background, but still.

Even though I used to subscribe to Birchbox years back, I HATE those little sample products that I often find myself with. I rarely reach for any of them and they’ve become a big part of my make-up clutter problem. I reach for a relatively small handful of items but have an entire bathroom drawer of make-up and application tools. And some of it is pretty old and gross.

My mascara often transfer to my upper eyelid. My eyelashes are long, so it happens while my mascara is drying and there’s nothing I can really do about it. I know it happens so I’m mindful to check for it and wipe it off. My boyfriend has also learned to alert me when it happens. I’ve thought about doing an eyelash tint so that I don’t have to worry about mascara anymore. The only eyeliners I like (and the only ones that stay put on me) are gel-based. I only wear eyeliner when I’m feeling fancy, and that’s not often. You may just need to try different formulas to find products that work well for you.

Re: Makeup at work, I see a mixed bag. One of my coworkers is a few years older than I am, only wears mascara, and looks great. Another coworker always comes in bare faced and honestly, I think she looks tired and make-up would help with that, but not my business and it’s not a big deal. She’s a busy mom, she has more important things to worry about. The executive director once made a sarcastic comment about her hair (it was a 90-something degree day with high humidity, so her hair was particularly frizzy that day) and I was appalled he’d say anything.

If the stuff just transfers onto your eyelid while it’s drying, take a q-tip with a tiny bit of remover or Vaseline and run it over the marks after they’re dry.

If it’s oil that makes it run during the day, I would say you probably need to use primer (Milani Eyeshadow Primer is great and cheap) and set it with powder before applying liner and mascara. And also make sure you’re not getting moisturizer or something on your eyelid. Also, try tightlining, where you just take the pencil and apply it to your upper waterline by gently pulling the eyelid up. That way the liner gives you definition without being on your actual eyelid.

Also re: Gimme Brow, I used it for years and loved it, but NYX Tinted Brow mascara, at least the blonde one, is just as good or better. I’m on my 2nd or 3rd tube.

Argh. I would love to try the NYX Tinted Brow mascara but unfortunately they don’t make it in auburn. Boo. 🙁

The best eye primer I’ve ever used (not super cheap) is from Too Faced. My eye makeup was still perfectly in place after flights to Japan and to China.

I have tried that one and the Urban Decay, and the Milani dupe works as well for me.

That’s dumb that they don’t make the NYX brow mascara in redhead shade(s).

I’ve always used Urban Decay and it did the trick. I haven’t tried any others.
