It seems that with just 2 shots and no booster, the vaccine effectiveness for Pfizer against Omicron is only 30%. Moderna seems to be having similar difficulties. Now is definitely the time to get a booster if you haven’t yet. I was able to get mine last month and am so glad I did.
December 17, 2021 at 7:46 am #1101109Yes, get your boosters as soon as you can. NYC is getting his HARD right and it happened in a matter of days. It’ll spread across the country like wild fire over the next couple weeks, especially with holiday parties and gatherings and travel. What we’re seeing in NYC is super triggering (for me, anyway) – so reminiscent of march 2020 but I have to keep reminding myself we have vaccines now and hopefully they’ll keep us safe. But I heard more sirens yesterday than I had in a long time…
LisforLeslieDecember 17, 2021 at 8:39 am #1101112I had to go into the office yesterday, we’re fully vaccinated and masks are required through the day. On my way to the office I saw the lines in front of testing centers wrapping around the block.
And while Omicron doesn’t seem to hit as hard as Delta, we saw healthy people die from Alpha so there is no guarantee that Omicron won’t harm people.
However yesterday I read in an article that surmises that severe COVID weakens the body so that one can’t manage any other potential health issues: From the article:
“They analyzed electronic health records of 13,638 patients who received a PCR test for COVID-19 within the University of Florida health system. Of them, 178 experienced severe COVID-19, 246 had a mild or moderate infection, and the rest tested negative. All patients recovered from the disease. However, they found that patients under 65 who recovered from severe COVID-19 had a 233% increased chance of dying compared to the uninfected over the next year. Because they didn’t die of COVID-19 specifically, their deaths may not have been tied to the disease. They conclude that severe COVID-19 appears to result in an overall decline in health and that preventing severe illness is more important than ever.”
I have some joint/muscle pain this go-round from my booster. And on/off headaches. I was tossing and turning most of the night, which was uncomfortable given the joint/muscle pain. Feeling okay enough to work today after taking some ibuprofen but would’ve chosen a Netflix day if I had my way. I’ve worked late most nights this and last week, though, so I think I can log off by early afternoon. Glad to be boosted but will be happier when the side effects go away in the next day or so.
December 17, 2021 at 4:15 pm #1101148This threat has convinced me to cancel attending the larger family Christmas gatherings. Thanks, I hate it.
It’s the right decision but damn. This sucks. Stupid variants.
So I just took a Covid test in Mexico because we’re flying home tomorrow. It was so bogus! We went to this certain hotel room, with a tip jar, and it took 5 seconds. They stuck the swab in one nostril (not high into your cavity) for one fraction of a second, and we each got the result back in exactly 15 minutes, negative. I’ve never gotten a test where they didn’t either have you rotate the swab around in your nostrils or they stick it up into your brain. And obvi the Mexicans have no motivation for anyone to test negative at this point, they just want us out of here. Lol. We did bring our own box of rapid tests which we’ll take just to be sure, but that was just ridiculous.
I brought my computer too, thinking, like, this would be a fantastic time to test positive and get stuck in Cabo because no one does jack shit the next 2 weeks, and we paid $7 each for some insurance from the resort in case we had to stick around until we tested negative.
PS has anyone seen the show “Botched?” I don’t watch TV at home, but here they show multiple episodes of this E! show back to back with no commercials, in English, after dinner when we get in bed. It’s these people who got too many plastic surgeries and need these two Hollywood doctors to fix them. I love it.
Earlier this week I got both my flu vax and covid booster vax at the same time (figured I would take advantage of the 2-for-1 holiday special…).
I continue to be lucky – other than pain in the injection area, I had no side effects from the booster (Pfizer) or the original (J&J). Interestingly, the arm with the flu vax hurt more than the arm with the covid vax.
Although I am all vaxed up, I plan to stay at home for the holidays and have no plans to mingle and jingle.
AngeDecember 18, 2021 at 4:59 pm #1101185Botched is ridiculous and I love it. One of the doctors in the later seasons could have been a contender himself, he got a bunch of filler in his cheeks and looked like a Ken doll.
Meanwhile I found a street sign the other day that said Gaymark LA and instantly thought of this page, it made me laugh in the middle of all this covid sadness.
I like how on Botched there’s always one person who’s so over the top ridiculous that the doctors are like, if we did this, your nose will turn black and fall off, or your boobs will rip open, you need to just wait one year before doing anything, and the person is like, ok bye, and you know they’re on their way to do it anyway.
