Thank you to everyone for all the replies, even if I am wrong (which I am) it’s good to get truthful feedback. I doubt this changes anything but I’m pretty sure that atleast 30% of students who have this teacher have a version of test or the actual test that they take from my teacher. I know that she uses different versions of the test for different class, each class at a different level (Honors, Enriched, etc) but they all have very similar questions (some of the same exact questions). This can either be passes on from older siblings (same situation as me) or friends in other classes giving their test. I also know that my teacher doesn’t even make her tests because at the bottom of all of my tests/quizzes it says “Assessment Book” with some copyright information and near that there is a page number. I’ve mentioned this before but there is a student in my class who took the class twice so it just adds to why my teacher SHOULD change her tests. I’d also like to note that my principal is very pro student (if that makes sense). For example, my principal has said that if a student fails it’s the teachers fault. So in my situation I’m sure the consequences won’t be too harsh if I do come forth. I say “if” because I’m not exactly sure if I will. To be completely honest, I don’t think I’m that type of person and by giving myself up, it becomes a problem with everyone that has shared tests (due to her making slight changes, if at all). So frankly, it might not be right, but I’m not going to come forth unless something happens. Thanks for all of the replies, if there is anything else you would like to add, whether it was repetitive or not, I’d love to read it. If there is any other guidance you could give please reply too.
I need helpDecember 23, 2018 at 5:51 pm #812958I’d also like to add that my teacher is well aware that I have an older sibling. The first few days of school she called me out on that and even gave me his old textbooks. Since she knows this I have no idea why she would keep using the same tests (or at least make one). I’m also not the only one with a sibling, I have a fairly large class with 27 students (for middle school) and there are quite a handful who have older siblings that had her. My parents tell my brother to save his work because it makes my life easier if I ever needed it, not because they are doubtful of my abilities. I thought other parents tell their kids to do this too so I’d wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t just me that had her old test.
MaltaKanoDecember 23, 2018 at 8:57 pm #812964Just make sure to keep the big picture in mind: what do you need to learn from this class? If it’s nothing, fine. But if this is a subject that’s a stepping stone to more advanced/complex subjects, make sure you are doing your due diligence to learn what you need to. You don’t want to get to, say, Calc BC having half-assed your way through AB. And having a lazy teacher just means you have to do more of the work to advocate for your own learning.
KateDecember 23, 2018 at 9:04 pm #812965There’s an important life skill that I think Ele4phant mentioned earlier, which is that if you fucked up and there’s a good chance someone is going to catch you out on it, you need to come clean first. If you can fix it without anyone ever knowing, then great.
You’re not doing yourself any favors here by not practicing that skill. There’s a good chance you may get ratted out for this, and at that point it would be much better for you if you had 1) already stopped cheating a while ago, or 2) brought the situation to the school’s attention. This is poorly handled on your part.
I need helpDecember 23, 2018 at 9:14 pm #812966From having the previously used tests/quizzes, it helps me prepare/study. However, I still do all my homework, classwork and any additional work. I’m not studying any less than previous years and the material I’m learning isn’t tremendously hard or anything (it’s algebra 1, not too hard). I don’t really feel like I’m learning less than my other classmates but I’m going to be more conscience of studying as if I’ve never seen the test/quiz.
LucidityDecember 23, 2018 at 9:41 pm #812967You’re not sure if you’re the kind of person to come forward? You mean the kind of person who is honest, ethical, professional, and takes responsibility? You prefer to rationalize and minimize your wrongs by blaming your teacher and pointing out that others are doing it? Okay. If you can live with yourself, you do you.
ele4phantDecember 23, 2018 at 10:13 pm #812968Well, I think you’re making the wrong call here. Ultimately this is about character, not necessarily about getting caught (although, I think there’s a good chance you will also get caught), it’s about being a person of integrity and doing the right thing.
At the very least, stop using those tests to “study”. Your brother’s other notes and assignments okay, keep referring those, but it’s not studying to just memorize the exact questions and answers. And if it’s not hard stuff, then you don’t need to cheat and find out the answers ahead of time anyways, right?
briseDecember 24, 2018 at 5:01 am #812974First, when you do something that shouldn’t happen, don’t speak about it. The first rule of cheating at school is to keep the secret. You just broke it multiple times.
Take pictures of a test in order to save the answers is wrong and cheating.
Pass it to someone else is also cheating.
Anyway, the teacher is terrible. It is common knowledge that old tests are being used as a study. Normally, the students can’t have access to the corrected tests with the answers, for this very reason.
Anyway, you have to know that if you “come clean” and say all to the principal, the whole class (if not all classes of this teacher) will need to retake the tests. Not cool, you will be hated, I garantee you.
If you say anything to the teacher, the chances are big that she comes clean to the principal because she will be afraid of being fired if this doesn’t come from her.
So you are stuck with bad solutions.RebeccaDecember 24, 2018 at 8:43 am #812984Oh honestly. There’s so much rationalization in your response…
She knows you have a sibling. There’s nothing to say that she would know that you use the sibling’s tests to study, and she’s not giving you implicit permission to do so just because you use the same books.
You say you want guidance? GROW UP. Take responsibility for what you did, and don’t do it again.
KateDecember 24, 2018 at 10:01 am #812986You got this. Next time some kid calls you a cheater, you just say, “Y’all know I’m not the type to do the right thing, so I’m still gonna be test-preppin’ by looking at the exact test we’re taking, but I’m trying to be more ‘conscience,’ and also possibly sometimes look at the book, so leave me alone.”
December 24, 2018 at 11:30 am #812992Have you ever heard the saying “three can keep a secret of two of them are dead”?
