@Hazel – it’s a fuzzy area. There is no law that states that someone who has been convicted of a crime is ineligible to hold the highest office. However, there are laws that state prevent holding office if that person has been convicted of treason or insurrection.

The sad truth is that the Democrats have not been able to connect to the people who actually benefit from their policies because those people are more interested in kicking down instead of punching up.

Hee hee – Trump org has lost all certificates to operate in New York. A judge will oversee the selling off of assets to cover bills. Reincorporation is not possible.

I don’t think this is going to be the killing blow that everyone thinks it is. I’ve known guys like Trump (smaller scale obviously). His ego will be bruised but he’ll actually get off on figuring out a way to get around it and make himself look like the persecuted victim. He’ll amp up his rhetoric and encourage his base to become even more violent and unhinged over this. We haven’t heard the last of the mighty Cheeto. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he nominates himself as the GOP candidate, creates a new party, or just sets himself up as a “kingmaker” who tries to control policy through his candidates – as long as he doesn’t have to spend a dime of his own money to do it anyway. Trump’s lasting legacy will be a division within this country so deep it will take decades to heal the rift even after his death. He made it socially acceptable to be a horrible person and we don’t have the cohesion as a nation to undo that. We’re too angry, too divided, and the moderates are too tired and disheartened to effectively rally.

I agree it won’t be the death of him but his business in NYC is kaput – here is a detailed article https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/9/27/2195797/-A-Deep-Dive-Into-The-NY-Court-s-Ruling-That-Trump-Is-Fraudster

They usually carry a ton of debt so there is a good chance that when their assets are revalued to their correct appraisal (the article provides example of extreme overvaluation of properties) the organization will be in the red. Like owing the Russians serious money.

    From the article:

The judge’s order states that the certificates incorporating the company are cancelled and gives the parties ten days to name up to three independent receivers to manage dissolution of the cancelled LLCs. That will likely be put on hold while Trump appeals.

If such appeal fails those receivers will be responsible for selling off the assets of the Trump Organization and related entities. Proceeds will be used to pay any financial penalties, imposed resulting from this decision and the trial, and to pay the costs associated with dissolving the companies and their liabilities. If any remains, Trump can get that.

Sounds a lot like another one of his famous bankruptcies. I’d love to see him finally pay for his behavior but I’m not convinced it will happen. Interesting to see how Milania and the daughter have distanced themselves.

@Hazel – there are debates back and forth whether it is legal for him to hold office again.

But… a big ol’ brick just fell

    https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/19/us/sidney-powell-pleads-guilty-in-georgia-trump-case.html

For those not following, Powell’s trial was supposed to start next week alongside Chesebro who was the “brilliant” mind behind the whole “confuse everyone and stop certification plan”. Powell has now pled guilty and got a sweetheart deal with her agreement that she is going to tell the truth about who knew what and when.

Recent emails show that Chesebro fully admitted that his plan would fail and would never pass legal tests but that it would spur the political base and cause chaos/confusion that might let them take control by default.

If anyone had bets that Jenna Ellis was number four to plead guilty… you win! We now have a little over 20% of those charged pleading guilty.

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/10/24/2201299/-Jenna-Ellis-becomes-the-latest-Trump-lawyer-to-plead-guilty-over-efforts-to-overturn-2020-election?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=top_news_slot_1&pm_medium=web

Ellis will likely be disbarred for this and she just dicked over Trump so her path to Fox News talking head is at risk. She’s too young to retire and go away like Powell.

Jenna Ellis has already been disbarred in Colorado because of pushing false statements about the 2020 election. If you have time, her wiki page is worth a quick read.

I’ve been more disconnected from the online world than usual on account of the many hot takes I keep seeing about current events that upset me. But I was meaning to comment on this thread. I listened to a podcast about this while I was getting ready this morning and they (I can’t remember who was being interviewed!) explained why they’re expecting more alleged co-conspirators to continue to plead guilty. Guess the next one didn’t take too long. I hope they keep on coming. I really hope after everything Trump gets what’s coming to him.

Rumor has it that Mark Meadows has taken immunity in the Jack Smith case and will testify against Trump. Once this is confirmed, I will happily post links to reputable sources.

Also, supposedly Powell continues to say that 2020 was stolen. If that’s the case, her plea should be rescinded and she should go to court. She can’t have it both ways.

Also this week Cohen testifies and the Trump legal team tried to delay the case due to one of the AGs testing positive for COVID. The judge offered them masks (!) and said the trial would continue. I wish you could hear my gleeful “hee!”

Things move slowly… but they are moving

    https://lawandcrime.com/2020-election/fake-trump-electors-in-wisconsin-sued-into-admitting-joe-biden-won-2020-election-agree-to-fully-cooperate-with-doj-jan-6-probes/

In summary, we are now in Wisconsin, where the slate of false electors have settled a lawsuit raised by the actual electors. As part of this settlement, the false electors must:
    1. Admit that Joe Biden won the 2020 election
    2. Admit that they were not elected officials responsible for submitting Wisconsin’s electorate and that this plan came from the Trump Campaign and Wisconsin GOP
    3. Must cooperate with any ongoing DOJ investigations regarding false electors or January 6th activities and that cooperation is suspended ONLY if they are charged with a crime related to those activities.

The noose is tightening… day by day.
