Update: “Language Barrier” Responds
It’s time again for “Dear Wendy Updates,” a feature where people I’ve given advice to in the past let us know whether they followed the advice and how they’re doing now. Today we hear from Language Barrier who was feeling some unease in blending her white boyfriend of a year and a half with her Chinese family as her relationship became more serious. Her update is below:
This past weekend was the Lunar New Year, and I remembered I wrote to you for advice last year and wanted to update you. Since then, we have had more discussions about our different cultures. I have been integrating him more with my cultural events, and this past weekend he celebrated the new year with my family for the first time and it was so special. I taught him a couple traditional Chinese phrases which he said to my family. He really enjoyed the weekend himself, too. Sometimes my family will slip into Chinese which he is fine with and we will switch back to English. Overall, things are going well!
Thanks for your advice.
So glad to hear it. Gong hei fat choy, and thank you for the update!
