Up to 20 cases at my kids’ school now from the past 10 days. Multiple cases in Joanie’s class, including I think her teacher (who was absent from the zoom lesson s all last week while the class was quarantined, and was missing yesterday when the class returned to in-person).
So glad you got your kids vaxxed, Anonymousse, and folks are getting their boosters. It will be a rough winter for those with waning or no immunity.
November 13, 2021 at 7:12 am #1100025Up to 16 reported cases at the kids’ school now. At least two, maybe three, in Joanie’s class. Don’t know about Jackson’s class since no one has been tested. School asked families to get kids tested over the weekend so we’ll see. I’m grateful we got first dose of the vaccine before this outbreak.
November 12, 2021 at 9:51 am #1099997I became eligible a couple months ago bc of health issues and I got mine two weeks ago. I would’ve gotten it then regardless. I was especially worried about the kids bringing it home from school but I think covid will be prevalent enough this winter that really everyone should consider getting a booster at this point.
November 12, 2021 at 8:42 am #1099990Thirteen confirmed cases at my kids’ school now, including three vaccinated teachers. It’s a school of about 475 students and staff. It’s still open with individual classes quarantined. Joanie’s class is quarantined but Jackson’s is not. We kept him home Wednesday, yesterday was a holiday, and we were really on the fence about what to do today. He’s 8 days past his first vaccine shot and would likely be fine if exposed to covid but, then, keeping him home til Monday would give his antibodies three more days to do their thing. He said he wasn’t so worried about himself anymore but is concerned for his unvaccinated classmates and hopes they don’t get infected during this outbreak. I’m hoping this encourages more parents to vaccinate their kids.
November 10, 2021 at 10:30 am #1099937Omg, anonymous, I’m so sorry! Both shingles and mono suck. I hope this is a mild case, at least. Terrible about the liver damage.
Leslie, you are totally right about Thanksgiving. There will be another holiday wave, and the unvaccinated or vulnerable folks who haven’t gotten boosters are not going to fare well. And as you point out, we have no idea what the longterm effects are. That’s been my biggest worry with my kids.
November 10, 2021 at 6:22 am #1099927There’s an outbreak at my kids’ school. Eight cases in four days (including two vaccinated teachers). Thirteen of eighteen classes are in quarantine. The DOH did not advise closing the school. Joanie’s been quarantined all week and we’re keeping Jackson home for the rest of the week even though his class isn’t quarantined. They’re not testing the kids whose classes haven’t been affected, which I think is idiotic. We’ve made it too far and are too close to full vaccination now for the kids to get covid at school at this point.
The city closed a school in queens that has 22 cases and evidence of widespread transmission. They have more than double the students we do, so maybe our school will be closed if there are a couple more positive cases today or tomorrow…
November 8, 2021 at 10:22 am #1099882Also, not for nothing but transmission rates in Europe are exploding. Germany is experiencing its highest level of rates since the pandemic began and a few other countries are right behind them. Hospitalizations are significantly increasing too. Any time I hear about what they’re doing in schools in Europe as a model for what we should be doing here, I’m dubious. It’s not going well there at all.
November 8, 2021 at 10:13 am #1099881Yeah, I think test-to-stay is problematic, personally, though I understand it’s a popular option among parents. My concern is that it can take a few days after transmission before an infected person tests positive, so on day 2, day 3, day 4 that a kid is testing negative and allowed in school, they could be infecting other people. Test-to-stay is a great way to avoid quarantine, but also a great way to increase community spread inside a school. This is something parents at my kids’ school are pushing to change the quarantine policy and if my kids weren’t weeks away from being fully vaccinated, I would be much more vocally opposing such a push. I think it’s short-sighted, but enough people follow Emily Oster and her ilk to say the data – cherry-picked, deeply-flawed data – supports test-to-stay. Anyhoo. Not a hill I’m gonna die on, and I am so glad that in a few weeks, my kids will be better protected against all this.
November 8, 2021 at 9:22 am #1099878Ugh, 3 confirmed cases at my kids’ school over friday-sunday, two of whom are teachers who must teach across multiple classes (like a specials teacher) bc 13 classrooms were exposed and have to quarantine (including one of my kids’ classes for the second time in a month). So over this and so glad in a few weeks, my kids will be fully vaccinated and will be better protected against covid AND quarantines.
November 4, 2021 at 11:42 am #1099771Thanks, guys!
Vathena, I’m sorry about Virginia! I heard that ever since Reagan, the party that holds the presidency loses the election in the first voting cycle in Virginia (and NJ, which the Dems actually won). Doesn’t change the outcome or it’s consequences, but hearing that made it feel not as devastating on a national-level, at least.
