Ummm… I’d be interested in hearing people’s responses too, as I have interviews this week and am doing the same thing. I had a guy get really aggressive with asking me the NAMES of the clients I work with at a certain company, and it was weird. But thank god no off the wall questions like what would I do on a reality show.

Maybe you can say something like your heat broke and you have to wait for repair guy. Anything that needs fixing or delivering, they generally give you a few-hour window so it ends up being a half-day thing. It seems normal in the workplace because it happens a lot.

Lunch with your mom? Or some family member who is in town?

My mom went through a phase a few years ago where she was “retired” but didn’t have enough to do, and she decided we’d go to lunch every 2 weeks. She’d drive to my office. People can’t really question it when it’s your mom.

    Sorry, I don’t.

I’m definitely seeing that the jobs recruiters are reaching out about are not advertised online. Probably because 1) they have the recruiter handling the search so they don’t need to post, and 2) the recruiter doesn’t want some great candidate getting into the funnel if they didn’t put them through.

One of the companies is west-coast-based but looking to build an office in my city on the east coast and need someone to build a team, but there’s no indication of that anywhere as I’m researching them online.

I think for more junior roles or people right out of school, casting a wide net by applying online is more what you do as part of your search, but the more experience you have, the more it makes sense to just use recruiters and network, or focus a much greater percentage of your time there than on online applications.

So you can’t get any keywords in there or follow the instructions in that link to show what kind of jobs you’re looking for? It’s too much of a stretch from where you are?

Definitely, and I think it would help to write them a note about who you are and what you’re looking for when you connect. Though they may not have anything immediately.

Since I updated my LinkedIn settings to show recruiters I’m looking late last week, I have had two reach out to me with positions that are a strong fit. Which suggests my profile has the right keywords. They message me and ask for my resume, and then set up phone interviews.

I noticed in one recruiter’s signature that she works for the Market Research Practice of a certain firm. I’d think you could keyword search for recruiters in X industry.

Finally, I read that the normal hit rate you’ll get from cold-applying online is 3% to 10%. If it’s higher, you’re in great shape. If lower, you need to tune up your resume and communications. I haven’t started cold applying yet, but I thought that was interesting.

Good advice, S. To that point, I’d say it’s probably difficult to realize it because of how often he’s not around. It’s like a fantasy.

@Copa, Re: reaching out to people you don’t know, it’s best if you can get an introduction to them through someone you DO know. But that may be tough if you’re trying to change industries. Again, I think you’d have better luck with a recruiter who specializes in that field… and, like you said, meeting people at events and adding them on LinkedIn.

I also helped my (much) younger friend at my company ask for a Director position like a boss today!!! He writes down what I say and then goes in with a strategy and a script that they aren’t expecting. Since summer of 2014 I will have more than doubled his comp if this goes through. Strategery!

So I mentioned above I’m just starting to look. A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn about a position in a company in my city, leading a client service team. She said the CEO is looking to hire ASAP, he’s interviewed a bunch of people with consulting backgrounds but decided he needs someone with the industry experience that I have instead, and that’s how she found me, by keyword searching on LinkedIn I guess.

But when I go to the website, that position isn’t listed. Only the more junior roles are posted.

Anyway, just a case for having LinkedIn up to date, with all the keywords, and the settings that show you’re looking (privately so recruiters can see).

And a woman I worked with for a few years at my current company is at this new place so I can get the scoop.
