@JimmyJam I have 22 days per year. I’ve only asked for half of them. I still have half my days left for the rest of the year.
I have not “pushed the issue”. When they told me I could not take my requested time off in March, I said ok thank you I understand. When can I resubmit my request for?
They told me May. So I resubmitted my request for May as instructed.
Now they’re coming back saying I don’t have that many vacation days allowed. Which is bullshit – because I have it in writing that I am allowed 22 days per year to use as “personal days” and that was one of the conditions upon which I accepted this offer.
They absolutely cannot dismiss because I requested a week off. They absolutely cannot dismiss me for standing up for myself with written proof of what they offered me and the conditions upon which I accepted this job.
And if they do? Oh well, fuck em.
Well, that’s stupid of them. Because if I am entitled to those sick days, I am going to call in sick.
But I am trying to be considerate of my company and my colleagues by planning in advance. To make sure nobody is stuck picking up the slack if I’m sick. To make sure all tasks are covered.
As a manager, wouldn’t you prefer that to your employees just phoning it in?
I’ve always gotten along with the general manager very well, so I’m not sure why this is such an issue. I’ve worked with her on many projects and we work well together, and I’ve always stood up for her when I’ve heard other employees talk shit.
I don’t get along very well with the sales director most of the time, we are often at odds, but things have been ok between us lately. We’ve mostly set aside our differences and been able to work together to get things done well. But she has nothing to do with HR or vacation requests or anything like that… those requests go through the general manager and the controller.
I dunno… management at my company really likes to make sure the separation between management and employees is very clear. They’re the kind of people who will tell you to do something just because they said so, and there’s zero room for discussion. I’m guessing this is some sort of power trip and they want to make sure I’m kept in my place.
If that’s the case I’m going to say great, you can expect me to call in sick on those days.
Here is exactly what was said during my negotiations:
Me: “Do you offer a set number of “personal days” or do you separate time off into vacation time, sick time, etc? I am currently receiving 21 “personal days” per year (which includes both vacation and sick time) to be used as I see fit. Does this work for you?”
Director: “With regards to the Personal Days we can work with this structure no problem.”
Director (when my contract was sent): “For our HR processing you will notice there are 10 vacation days allocated plus you will get 12 sick (personal) days per year that can be used at your own discretion. I hope this meets your needs.”
@Kate “Even if you did only have 10 days, why would 5 be too many to request?”
I requested some days for later in the year in addition to my week in May. Since apparently we’re so swamped, etc I wanted to get my requests in way ahead of time so as not to deal with this issue again. So I requested a long weekend in June and one at the end July.
It works out to 12 business days. Which, again, shouldn’t be an issue because my contract SAYS I have 22 days per year to use at my discretion.
I forwarded all my documents and correspondence to the controller that specify my 22 “personal days”.
And he replied saying that I only have 10 vacation days and 12 sick days.
So I said yes, and you’ll see within these documents that it specifically says “to be used at your discretion”.
If he replies and says I’m not allowed to use my “sick” days I’m just going to say fine, you can expect me to call in sick on those days.
I’ve only taken 3 days off since I started this job 9 months ago!
When I went to Scotland last September, I worked remotely the whole time. Full days, and covered all my usual tasks.
I took 3 days off last November for my trip to London.
I have never called in sick.
I even asked in person back in December if this would be an acceptable request. There’s four month’s notice! And I offered to work remotely for most of that time, so I wasn’t even asking to be unplugged completely. And I was told to discuss with my direct colleague how we would divide our duties and then submit my request.
So I did, and as you know, I was ignored for a month.
No, there has been no announcement that people aren’t allowed to take time off in March or April. As far as I know, I’m the only one who has been told this. In fact, several people have taken time off at the beginning of March (I requested the end of March so there was no overlap). One of my colleagues is going to Hong Kong for two weeks. But they told me “you’ll notice that some other people have time off scheduled but that’s because they requested it way in advance.”
WELL I TRIED TO REQUEST 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE!!
Anyway, I submitted my request for May as I was told, and now they’re saying I don’t have that many vacation days. But I have it all in writing, so how can they say no??
I’m so frustrated, because they keep telling me how important I am and blah blah blah. Lately they’ve been bringing me to like every single client meeting and asking me to speak about strategy (even though my job is not supposed to be client facing). I literally have 5 client meetings this week that they’ve asked me to speak at.
@Skyblossom we know the visa rules and all of that, and we’ve got it all worked out 🙂
So now I’m getting pushback on the number of days I requested. The controller was like sorry, you’ve requested more days than you’re allowed, you can’t take them.
And I fucking FLIPPED OUT because I specifically negotiated 22 personal days per year when I accepted this position, and he’s saying I only have 10.
So I just forwarded him all of my negotiation correspondence with the directors and I have it in writing that I have 22 days to use at my discretion. There’s no way they can come back and say I’m not allowed to take my time off… I will punch a goddamn hole in the wall.
WHY I am facing such roadblocks just to take my fucking vacation time that’s owed to me???? ARGH!!!!!!
