@The Hizzy – how was Hawaii (other than you got engaged!)? I think we are going to the same places as you went so I wanted to ask if you had any specific recommendations? It will be my husband, me and our 18 yo who will have just graduated HS! This is a combo graduation gift for her and anniversary trip for us (weird I know but we can’t afford two big trips). I already have a lot of things on our list of must-dos, plus just some relaxing on the beach.
TheHizzyDecember 13, 2017 at 9:33 am #729155@Rangerchic – we were on the Big Island. I recommend going to Kona to swim. The beaches were beautiful. On the Hilo side the beaches are lava based.
-Rainbow Falls
-Coconut Island
-Downtown Hilo has a farmers marker (indicate you’re a ‘local’ and you’ll get treated better)
-See the Lava flow (it’s a 2 hour round trip trip with a lot of walking. We didn’t get to do this because we got engaged instead)
-Visit the observatory at night (Pack WARM clothes it’s like 30 degrees)
-Kilauea Volcano at night is a must (this is cold here too!)And get yourself some spam sushi.
December 13, 2017 at 10:58 am #729167Radio star INSISTED that we eat spam and egg sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls with jam in the morning.
TheHizzyDecember 13, 2017 at 2:00 pm #729198@Ranger – things close HELLA early on the island! And! If you want to take home chocolate covered macadamias (Which you do!) go to a regular grocery store for them. Tourist stores were double the price. I did some local shopping in the non tourist area. We had a super cool Air b&b at both locations if you need recommendations let me know. We lodged for 5 days for under $300 I think?
For quick food:
Zippy has hella good fries
Ken’s House of Pancakes is the only 24/7 place we found in Hilo
Pineapples downtown was really goodLoco Moco with spam is a must. They have rice on EVERYTHING. If you go to McDonald’s you can get the breakfast with rice instead of a pancake.
December 14, 2017 at 12:50 pm #729272Yes, recommendations would be great! We have our flights booked but not places to stay. We have also been looking at Air B&B. We are going for 10 days so will have to spend a bit more than 300 but that was a great price! And glad to know everything closes so early…kinda strange to me!
So, RadioStar, were the spam and egg sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls with jam good? I don’t recall ever trying spam though that’s not to say I haven’t. I suppose we will just have to give it a try!
It’s almost Friday guys! I have just a few X-mas things to shop for and then I’m done. And I can stay home (besides grocery shopping) and bake and relax (minus some cleaning). After next Thursday, we get two weeks off for winter break here at work so my brother and his family are coming to visit…I’m just getting excited for the end of the year, family visiting, x-mas, etc.
December 14, 2017 at 1:04 pm #729276That Great @Copa! I hope you enjoy your date.
My husband and I went on a date on Tuesday and saw the live performance musical “A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder” Tuesday. It was great! Except he’s not really into plays/musicals though he said he enjoyed it. It was just nice to get out on a date since we haven’t had a chance to go on one in a while.

I’ll be seeing his whole family, none of whom I’ve met before, so wish me luck! He’s already met a few of my family members when they visited our city this summer, but he will be meeting the rest of my family too. These past two weeks of work have been so incredibly crazy. Can’t wait to take a break. And to shop at Target and Trader Joe’s, drink as much free water as I want in restaurants, and cry internally about the prices of everything. Don’t even get me started on politics. Hooray America!
KateDecember 14, 2017 at 7:47 pm #729309Haha, do NOT mention any topic remotely political. I’m on vacation in a place that’s very dry, never rains this time of year, but it did today. I casually said maybe it’s climate change, and this lady was like, “well, I don’t believe in climate change. We don’t have records going back 500 years, blah blah blah.” She’s from HOUSTON for God’s sake where the whole city was drowned due to climate change 3 months ago. So awkward, and I just wanted to enjoy a little wine and the fire pit. I have been really careful not to say anything, but that was an unfortunate slip.
